I was over 1000 grains when I got bored. There seems to be no penalty for getting anything wrong, and I take issue with some of the definitions.

Your vocab level goes down for getting a word wrong.

HMS_Blinkin 2008-03-09 02:57:52 PM
I had already been doing this for months, but I am glad it got on Fark. Hopefully a lot more people start playing/donating.

Really? I didn't notice. It seemed to keep going up. I think I only missed three or four. And what does the "level" mean, anyway? There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the selection/difficulty of the words.

The first few you answer are designed to set your vocabulary level. They're all over the place in terms of difficulty.

From there, you answer questions and for every three you get wrong, you drop a level.

skinink 2008-03-09 03:02:03 PM
For each word you get wrong, does a can of beer get donated to a needy fraternity?

Read the FAQs. Difficulty of words is based on number of times wrong answer is given.

Boy, that made little to no sense.

Here:

"The program keeps track of how many people get each word right or wrong, and then adjusts each word's difficulty level accordingly. So the words at the easiest levels are the ones that people most often get right. The words at the hardest levels are the ones that people most often get wrong."

Wow im at 1120, im surprised I know as many words as i do. Well kinda anyway, used to win spelling bees and all that as a kid. My girlfriend on the other hand, complains about people using "big" words lol. Always asks me what something means.

I am impressed. But if you play a lot it does get easier, because you learn the harder level words. I usually average around 46.

oddly, I was in Ralph Lauren the other day (buying present for fussy friend, not a regular stop for me)and one of the sales people was talking about this site. Seemed an unusual choice of conversation in the overpriced yuppie store.

I failed at "catholicity". For some reason I was looking for the word "religiosity" in the answers.

How is it that simply playing a free word game results in real-world food donations? If the World Food Programme has the resources to donate the food, why do they require us to play these little games before they'll feed the hungry? That seems a little macabre.

In truth, the word game does nothing; the WFP already donates huge amounts of rice (and other stuff) every day. They also rely on monetary donations, just like every other charity group in existence. So, while it may feel good to think you're feeding the hungry BY THE POWAH OV YOUW MIIIIND... it's not real.

If you want to really help people, make a donation to the World Food Programme.

I played up to 300 grains of rice, missed only 1, and intentionally stopped at 42 just because, you know...

I've always been good at multiple guess, and wouldn't have known what many of these words mean. In many cases I correctly paired two words, neither of which I really would feel confident using in a sentence, because I saw some correspondence in the latinate roots.

Kinda makes you wonder about entrusting the destiny of college-bound students to standardized testing...

It makes people feel better, like giving something back for the hundreds of years of exploitation that still go on today.. anything to help overcome the white man guilt..

The advertisers agree to pay based on numbers of grains of rice "earned" through people playing the game.

There is an ad at the bottom of the screen.
If you guess right, they give the ad revenue to charity, if you guess wrong, the ad revenue goes towards maintenance of the site.

Ta-daa!

From the FAQ:

Who pays for the donated rice?

The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice.

It's what I do.
Santa and the Tooth Fairy are real. They even live together. But Santa prefers to go by "SantaBear" and the other guy just goes by "Fairy." And their flat is actually in Soho, not the North Pole. That pole reference actually goes back to something else entirely.
