First D.J.: Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today.
Second D.J.: It's coooold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?
First D.J.: Not hardly. And you know, you can expect hazardous travel later today with that, you know, that, uh, that blizzard thing.
Second D.J.: That blizzard - thing. That blizzard - thing. Oh, well, here's the report! The National Weather Service is calling for a "big blizzard thing!"
First D.J.: Yessss, they are. But you know, there's another reason why today is especially exciting.
Second D.J.: Especially cold!
First D.J.: Especially cold, okay, but the big question on everybody's lips...
Second D.J.: - On their chapped lips...
First D.J.: - On their chapped lips, right: Do ya think Phil is gonna come out and see his shadow?
Second D.J.: Punxsutawney Phil!
First D.J.: Thats right, woodchuck-chuckers - it's
[in unison]
Both: GROUNDHOG DAY!

I started getting into vinyl, not because I can tell the difference in sound, but because I can't help but do what other hipsters do.

I listen to old vinyl because it's cheap and companies don't tend to republish obscure 80's art-punk and electro. GEMM is my friend.

I have a nice collection of out of print Jazz albums. I have spent a lot of time converting them to MP3s it is nice to listen to them in my car.

ftfa:

Other record enthusiasts are buying turntables with USB cables for their laptops. The unit enables users to burn old vinyl onto CDs.
while i doubt people are buying them more for laptops than desktops, i have one of these setups. a few times a year i have people ask me to burn an album to cd for them. i've got a tom jones album sitting in front of me that a lady i work with wants burned

the downside to this is i have to listen to the damn album. oh well, it won't be as bad as the alvin and the chipmunks christmas album i did a few months ago for the daughter of a friend

the funny thing is, i have this decent turntable and i don't own a single album

I scored some nice Nat King Coles out of a junk man's stash that I'm pretty pleased with. A couple of Elvis records, too.

I like vinyl because when you try to clean off the dust it doesn't leave scratch marks even though you have used the lightest of touches... those and MP3s... I don't have an issue with them.

I spent the past ten years collecting records, amassing over 1600, and I'm started selling them off on eBay lately. My last batch, which closed on Sunday, was 40 records, and I fetched $840. I can't believe that shiat that people are buying, but hey, who am I to question their mindless trend-hopping?

May be a stupid question, though asked in earnest: aren't vinyl records produced these days coming from a digital source anyway? I mean, in the olden days, the masters were recorded onto magnetic tape--they aren't still doing that, are they?

At some point, the music you hear coming from newer vinyl records was converted into 1's and 0's, then back again. So what's the difference?

I say "pretends" because NOBODY actually likes jazz... Some people pretend to because they think it sounds cool to say, but yeah... no... Jazz is the most jerk-off pseudo-musical genre EVER. Horrendous wank-fest.

The White Stripes made a big deal about recording "Elephant" on all analog equipment, and avoiding digital everything. Then, they copied the master reels to a DAT and effectively negated all that audiophile hard work. Not that anyone could actually tell the difference, I just thought it was funny.

Also, the White Stripes are pretty terrible.

Bucky Katt [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 02:32:08 PM
all i know is that the old LP i have of Ray Charles, despite the hiss, sounds better, more alive, than the "remastered" cd, which sounds hollow and sterile on a stereo system with big speakers. the cd, however, does sound ok on crappy, tiny speakers.

but listen to whatever the hell you want. they're your ears.

Don't bring that science in here, this is an audio thread. Records give you that warm analog sound. But you can only do them justice if your amp uses tubes.

Almost all new vinyl records were recorded digitally. The few that were recorded reel-to-reel were likely mastered onto DAT or even CD before being pressed. I'd guess the number of records that were mastered from original analog tape to vinyl to be fewer than ten per year, according to what I hear from Rainbo Records.

Miles Davis, Sketches of Spain. Give it a try. If you don't like it you can always go back to Hanna Montana.

They still use tape sometimes. However, you're right: most masters are all-digital now. Unfortunately, the studios just use that now to make them super-loud, to the point of distortion. An LP can't be made that way, or the needle will jump the groove. So that makes LPs sound better in a way.

I recently started buying vinyl records because theres no new music made today that I can stand listening to. A store called Half Price Books opened and they have a vinyl section where everything is $1. So far I have found everything from 2 Live Crew to the 2001 Soundtrack to Thriller to Harry Bellafonte. For a buck its hard to go wrong.

I have a few friends in the extreme Black Metal community, and they tell me a sizeable % of Black Metal bands, in an attempt to stay "real", only release on LP.
I think they just want to cater to 4 people.

well, coming from a DJ standpoint you have things like CD mixers and (gah) iPod mixers, but the tactile quality of queuing up a record and shifting the tempo can't be beat. even if all you're doing is mixing trance or something, no scratching, there's something about vinyl that makes DJing more fun and party-friendly. of course things like records melting in the sun, having to carry around giant bags for a relatively small amount of music, tracks skipping during the middle of a perfect set etc. are annoying but the ups still outweigh the downs imo

lewismarktwo 2008-03-09 02:44:47 PM
If you want the feeling of listening to vinyl with your ipod just turn on a fan or run the tap water.

i wonder if anyone has calculated how many gigs, uncompressed [in .wav] a vynyl can hold?

thats why they will always sound better, even with a lo qual sound sys.[400-15khz]
there could be a market for titanium master qual. discs.
for certain artists that is..
i doubt anyone would put radiohed on titanium

//Amy winehouse? Oh Yeah...PCD too
