Miss Smartass 2008-03-09 10:36:06 AM
Why doesn't that happen here in Canada?

u01000101 2008-03-09 10:36:28 AM
Never tired of this punchline... (yawn)

jake_lex [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:36:55 AM
Just do what I do, crack open the bottles and take a sip right there.

What, you can't do that?

Otherwise Just Fine [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:36:57 AM
In Boone, NC, they have wine samplers in the grocery stores sometimes. I didn't realize there was anything questionable about it.

hereinNC 2008-03-09 10:37:34 AM
Local grocery store here in North Carolina does this all the time(Never seen beer) but always wine.

You would have no shot at getting buzzed on the amount they give you.

The seattle Legislature members that are against this, are idiots.

Ikam 2008-03-09 10:39:38 AM
They do it in my grocery store all the time. They usually give the wine out in a thimble sized glass, you'd have to go back ten times to get a buzz, and I'm sure that is something they'd notice. Hell, one time they even tried to get me to try some tequila while I was shopping the liquor section (I declined, I'm not much for tequila straight).

kona [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:40:19 AM
in Mexico I have seen tequila samples being offered by young ladies in dresses in the nice new modern supermarket starting at 10am. YRLY

Not in Pennsylvania it isn't.

PlNG 2008-03-09 10:42:24 AM
Oh wait, samples?
I read that as sales.
Prohibition is really crumbling.

betona 2008-03-09 10:44:44 AM
Wine tastings happen all the time here, usually with some wine you've never heard of that they're trying to give a marketing push.

But a beer tasting--THAT would cause me to stop and give it a try.

Flab [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:44:47 AM
Miss Smartass: Why doesn't that happen here in Canada?

In Quebec it happens. The samples are so small though, that even a smurf wouldn't get drunk.

nekom [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:45:32 AM
In Pennsylvania, you can't even BUY beer or wine in a grocery store.

Was anyone else amazed at how many people with a "D" after their name thought this was bad, and how many with an "R" thought it was ok?

And here I thought the republicans were the ones that were trying to force their outdated puritanical values on the dumb masses.

siyuntz [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:49:33 AM
they were doing that yesterday when I went shopping. I got Lagunitas' "Hairy Eyeball". Delicious.

I'm confused.

4 grocers within minutes walking distance. I know what I'm doing next Saturday morning.

Oh holy Jeebus, hide the wimmins and chilluns! They be turnin' our grocery stores into dens of iniquity!

People get their Fruit of the Looms in a bunch over the stupidest shiat. Of course, being a Cathaholic, I have no problem whatsoever with this.

BunkyBrewman [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 10:57:12 AM
Oh please. With the sheer amount of prescription pillheads populating this nation, a taste of wine is the least of the rest of our worries.

butterwings 2008-03-09 10:59:29 AM
Wow! neat idea! howver the thought of it right now is not good. (burping up pizza and Amstel Light from late night eating and drinking)

Ihaveanevilparrot 2008-03-09 11:03:28 AM
I used to accompany my parents to wine tastings at the vinyards in northern Ohio when I was a child. They'd give out several little cups to try, they had a nice selection of cheeses too, and you could even get plain grape juice(made from the same grapes as the wine) for the kids. I actually remember my parents letting me have a small taste of some of the wines, and no one saw anything wrong with that. A small taste isn't exactly gonna get a kid drunk. I was more interesting it the cheese anyway, lol.

I don't recall ever thinking there was anything weird about that. Adults drink wine and various other types of alcohol. All you have to do is demonstrate to your children that it can be consumed responsibly.

Oddly enough now that I'm 22 I much prefer fresh grape juice over wine. Unfortunately it's a lot easier to find good wine that good grape juice :(

NC here again. The Harris Teeter around the corner has wine samples at least once a month.

liquor stores in Ontario are always giving samples of something, yesterday was bailys irish creme and bailys mint creme.

tacos4jesus 2008-03-09 11:06:32 AM
yeah, uh, here in the red-neck bible belt of legislated morality (NC) we have this.

/used to live in seattle, wouldn't have guessed they would be behind the times on this one

Ihaveanevilparrot 2008-03-09 11:06:32 AM
Ihaveanevilparrot: I was more interestinginterested itin the cheese anyway

Wow, I don't know how I missed that.

Here in Texas the grocery store near my house serves the thimbles of wine. Never beer. If you want a buzz, go to Spec's (a chain of liquor stores) on Saturday. You can wind through the aisles partaking of everything from vodka, schnapps, wine, whiskey, you name it. At the flagship store in downtown Houston free liquor abounds. Cheap buzz on a Sat afternoon...

ndotseth 2008-03-09 11:08:33 AM
The Jewel-Osco stores in Northern Illinois have been doing that for years. On my birthday last year a nice little old lady let me sample 4 good sized shots of premium tequila (not that Jose Cuervo donkey piss either).
If she would've given me 2 more I might have taken her home.

I go to Central Market with my lovely bride twice a month. She goes to shop, I go to eat brie and drink wine. It's win/win.

Kali-Yuga 2008-03-09 11:12:23 AM
The grocery store right near campus here frequently has beer and liqour samples during the weekends.

A few times they've had a guy dressed like captain morgan with two pirate wenches giving out rum and cokes.

esrasmus 2008-03-09 11:20:40 AM
Here in Wisconsin, where we know how to drink, the legislature had just been debating if it was okay to offer free hard liquor samples in addition to beer and wine, and now it is.

When they start offering free samples of soylent green, then I'll get worried.

I like this idea. There's all kinds of beers I would like to try but don't want to pay $9 to experiment on a six pack.

You can't pass up anything free in this country.

I live in Ohio and grocery stores here will let you sample selected wines for $.25. The old ladies serving it say the law does not allow them to serve it free.
/not sure if it's a state law or a Summit County law.

Indeed. I'll bet there'd be responses to a "Free herpes!" ad on Craigslist.

And that's the reason I'm mexican :D.

At the Ralph's on Brookhurst you can slurp jello shots off of the firm bellies of the Mexican cart boys.

They were doing this the other day with some kind of Mike's Hard (by hard we mean 2%) Strawberry Estrogen Mango Punch or something. I stood by the sample guy and thought long and hard about whether or not to take a sample. Finally decided that free alcohol was free alcohol and took a shot. God it was nasty. Then I went and got some Guinness.

Saw one company taking a good approach about a year ago though. Passing by the beer aisle, an incredibly hot woman walks up to me and says, "do you like beer? Here, try this!"
It was mediocre and overpriced but I bought two 6 packs because she was hot.

Don't know if it's State law, but in Columbus (Franklin County) the same rule is in effect. On the plus side, I don't have throngs of douchebags trying to get a cheap buzz crowding me when I go to the store.

jelloslug 2008-03-09 11:38:21 AM
They have samples here in SOUTH CAROLINA. They are not allowed to have "free" samples though so they cost a penny. They also usually have a free pnney tray nearby if you happen to have forgotten your penny.

You mean steroetypes aren't 100% accurate? That's unpossible!!!

I mean, these samples seem small, and RAPE are insignificant as far as getting you buzzed. (lincoln)

Uh oh, politics in a beer thread. This can only end well.

FTFA: "You're going to see booze being handed out for free. That's wrong," said Rep. Larry Seaquist, D-Gig Harbor, a retired Navy captain.

Since he's a Democrat, it's not really the giving it away for free part that bothers him. He wants to give it away free--only to low income families--after purchasing it with my tax money (and taking a large kickback for himself).

See, I can play the stereotype game too.

One of the reasons I used to love Chicago. Not only were their Beer and Wine tasting ladies int eh Supermarket, but around the holiday's they'd be mixing up cocktails to show off different brands of Run, whiskey, gin , etc. The Jewel on a Saturday morning was a hell of a lot cheaper than a bar on a Saturday night

fragMasterFlash 2008-03-09 11:52:17 AM
Sampling free cheese on Saturdays at Central Market (better known as Central Markup) is always fun and interesting. If they start pairing wine and cheese samples I will be much more inclined to open my wallet to their outragous prices. And yeah, when someone is pouring their wine it is considered bad form to taste unless you are planning to buy a bottle of wine, not necessarily theirs but atleast they got a shot at the sale by letting you swirl and sniff a sample.

Buh, it snowed like 2 feet here and I'm almost out of beer; got a bottle of wine left though. Screw Omarion, pray for me!

/sample my fist, Frodo!
