Three Jeeps on the list.

Is this the "Jeep Thing" I keep hearing about?

They were ranked low because they ride like crap.

Most of these vehicles were heavily penalized for performing as designed.

Jeeps ride rough, and the Yaris is a cheap, affordable shiatbox. Film at eleven.

Just try taking a Yaris offroad... ;)

Jeeps have always ridden like crap, but the 2007-2008's ride much smoother thanks to them completely obliterating its full offroad capabilities.

FTFA:

Lows: Ride, handling, braking, noise, fuel economy, fit and finish, visibility, frontseat comfort, access, reliability.

Okay, but aside from that, it is a wonderful car.

this is stupid. basically, all the vehicles made for off road use are made for off road use and not for on road use. the others are shiatty hatchback compacts. of course the jeep is going to be shiatty on road, its meant to go off road! and the compacts..well they suck ass. get what you pay for etc.

The Grand Marquis doesn't have an ESC key? I guess as long as you CTRL, ALT and DEL you'll be okay.

Anyone else notice how often the phrase "but those factors are not included in Consumer Reports' basic vehicle score" came up? e.g.:

"The Yaris is the smallest and least expensive car Toyota sells in the United States. It actually ranks at the top of the list in both reliability and low cost of ownership, but those factors are not included in Consumer Reports' basic vehicle score."

Salacious Salad 2008-03-09 02:10:03 PM
If your springs have a hard setting, ofcourse it's going to ride like crap.

Ha. My girlfriend drives a Suzuki Forenza. It's actually not that bad of a car. I was actually surprised to see it on the list.

It actually ranks at the top of the list in both reliability and low cost of ownership, but those factors are not included in Consumer Reports' basic vehicle score.

Yeah, because consumers don't care about reliability. Or cost of ownership. FAIL. That's kind of like saying "core inflation isn't rising. As long as you don't count gas or food!".

lefande 2008-03-09 02:15:51 PM
Consumer Reports has been doing this for decades. Any car that doesn't fit their criteria for the. best. car. eva. is immediately panned.

Off-road special purpose vehicle? Worst car eva.

Expensive high performance special purpose vehicle, e.g. Corvette, Viper or GT40? Worst car eva.

shiatty econo box for less than $10k, because it is all you can afford? Worst car eva.

The only cars Consumer Reports ever gives decent ratings to are the ones that compromise on absolutely everything. Any car that is remotely interesting gives up some features in favor of others. I had a Land Rover Defender, no roll up windows, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, high maintenance. Same with the Ferrari 308GTS, no mortal human being could possibly sit in that car comfortably, no matter their height. But I drove these cars because they were cool and different.

If it was up to Consumer Reports, we would all be driving Toyota Avalons. What is the point in living then?

This. Don't know about anyone else, but unless I'm going off-road (and I don't much), reliability and TCO are way the hell up on my list of priorities. Yes, the Yaris looks good to me.

But I think it means that the folks at CU realize that most of the American public cares not a bit about how it performs, they just want all the bling they can afford. *sigh*

little big man 2008-03-09 02:17:40 PM
Pfft....half the stuff CR tells me to buy is garbage, so I doubt they have a good handle on what they think crap is.

farkinsinism 2008-03-09 02:17:49 PM
basicstock: Had to pick on Ford didn't you.

CR had to make the list 11 to include it. I grew up in a GM family (prior to the quality-apocalypse), but my g/f has a Focus. I do most of the driving, and I love it. they've done the right thing bringing their European line to North America.

acid704 2008-03-09 02:18:02 PM
Communist.

SIHappiness 2008-03-09 02:18:28 PM
In essence, this "score" is evaluating a vehicle's objective performance on the road - that is, handling, acceleration, comfort, efficiency, safety features, and amenities. For comparison's sake, I believe the Lexus LS460 (big, RWD V8 luxo-sedon) is the highest scoring car using these criteria.

It does not mean that a car is "crappy." The Yaris is acknowledges in the article as highly reliable and inexpensive to operate, but as an econobox, it doesn't rate well in the above categories.

Similarly, the plethora of ladder-frame SUVs on the list perform poorly, as would be expected. If you're looking for an SUV to off-road in, this is not a list you should check. If you're looking for an SUV because you're like 97% of the SUV owners in America, this list is completely accurate. Jeep Wranglers SU-UCK as a road car, period.

ablank 2008-03-09 02:18:49 PM
WTF, from TFA:

The Yaris is the smallest and least expensive car Toyota sells in the United States. It actually ranks at the top of the list in both reliability and low cost of ownership, but those factors are not included in Consumer Reports' basic vehicle score

Um, so the two most important features for a car are "not included in ... basic vehicle score." why?

I don't think The Hippies are concerned about your ability to watch porn on the back of headrests, or ease of popping The Cris at highway speeds. Those didn't factor into the final score.

The Trailblazer shares its score and Consumer Reports' comments with the nearly identical GMC Envoy.

Odd that car lots find these to be jewels... Very hot item with fast turn around. Also know a few people with these and the only gripe is the fuel mileage of like 20mpg (which is higher than I expected)

1 person has an above average size family and says they would NEVER get rid of it, the other is a relative of only 2 in the family (and loaded with money - goes through vehicles like it is a contest) and the Envoy is the longest vehicle she has kept... can't be too bad... even bought her mother one.

dj_bigbird [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 02:27:12 PM
Wow...Consumer Reports completely invalidated that list by their own hand.

carmody 2008-03-09 02:27:51 PM

Jkay [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 02:27:57 PM
See this for what it is: a portion of a ranked list, cherry-picked and presented by a 3rd party as some kind of shiat list for the controversy value.

Suppose someone published a book of 1000 songs from the 1980s and scored them according to a rule set. Someone picks up the book, looks for the 10 lowest scored songs out of the 1000 listed, and publishes their own article titled "Song Book's 10 worst songs of the 1980s" ..

Don't blame CR; this isn't their article, and not their intention.

Dude you sound like a japanese kid pushed you into a locker and beat the shiat out of you, moron.

The fact that both of those toyotas rank top in reliability and low cost of ownership means you don't care about the details as much as you do about being a whiner lol.

dang ... wth people.

RG400 Smart Towel 2008-03-09 02:32:44 PM
Seriously, why does CR always do the Best/Worst lists? I'd much rather see the Mean/Median lists, of course then we wouldn't have to get a subscription to their crappy magazine...

This just in, Consumer Reports rates Consumer Reports a 1/10 for Magazines you're most likely to enjoy. While it contains useful product information and relatively objective reporting, these factors were not used in computing the final score.

These "riceburning shiatboxes" ranks tops in reliability which puts them on the top of the list of folks who don't want to replace a transmission once a year.

How is that any different than buying a Hummer, and as you drive it down the road, constantly work an evil cackle while telling The Hippies to bite you and your gas-guzzling American man-mobile, as you literally said you would, while Sipping The X and O and bumping some Fiddy. Basically just having the greatest old time.

/Fiddy-bumping didn't factor into the final score. Oddly enough, the X and O did.
//I mean, the H3 isn't even THAT expensive anymore? Why is it such a status symbol?

MIguy [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 02:35:11 PM
czarangelus: It's not an off-road vehicle. It's ponderously slow to accelerate getting on the freeway. It can't tow competently.

1. The H3 does very well off road (first stock vehicle to finish the Baja 1000)
2. The Alpha has a 300 HP V8 (7.8 seconds 0 to 60)
3. Has a towing capacity of 6000 lbs

Just like anything else you post, you spew shiat without doing any research first.

Yeah my ZJ is noisy, rides rough, has a severe drinking problem and when stuff breaks its a surprise to no one. But I do all my own maintenance, it's NEVER left me stranded and I can't count how many people I've pulled out of snow banks or plowed trails for others to follow. Well to be honest.

If you mention that you will be purchasing a Hummer of any model on FARK; your penis size will automatically questioned.

That is just the way it is. czarangelus just got it first, and he did a pretty good jorb at it.

There are better SUVs for the same money out there. My friend is on his second H2. The first one burned to ground on I-95 when it was like 2 months old. He won't buy another. The second one was free from GM.
