Hasn't Lollapalooza been doing fine in Chicago the last several years?

RevMercutio: Hasn't Lollapalooza been doing fine in Chicago the last several years?

That's what I was thinking.

It was certainly fine last year and the year before. I had a blast. This year looks to be even better.

Just bought 2 tickets for Dream Theater (Best friend is getting married in the beginning of May, he and I are going to the Tampa show) and I plan to see Tom Petty this summer. Aside from that I couldn't give two craps about music this year; even if Elvis unearthed himself and put on a free concert in my back yard.

Well if you recall Lollapalooza Didn't exist between 98 to 2002 from lack of finfing good enough headliners and lack of general interest.

Dudes, not to knock the recent lineups but have you ever seen the lineups of the original shows???

Just on the 2nd tour alone the lineup was:

REd Hot Chili Peppers, ministry, soundgarden, pearl jam, jesus and mary chain, ice cube ect...

I starved an entire day so I wouuldnt lose my spot up from the stage... One of the best shows I've seen...

...then in 2003 it came alive again with the ressurection of Janes addiction and did poorly. then it COMPLETELY died in 2004 from poor ticket sales and its been doing moderately, very moderately ok in past 2 years

Part of the problem got to be Perry Farrel got away from that. Part of the deal of tour was to give lesser known bands, like Jesus and Mary Chain, Butthole Surfers etc a chance to be on a big stage. Alas, Perry got away from that.

true, and also Cobain blowing in Brains out in 94 and taking the whole grunge trend with him... that moment killed rock music for quite a little while...

/YeAH Butthole Surfers! You ever seen those crazy bastards live ??

I came to ask this too... Sounds like a cool combo, I like the music of both, and they have been great in new music distribution methods.

Sadly while concert ticket prices are often way high, there are a lot more legitimate reasons for that than with CDs. So I hope they can push for lower prices, but it'll still be pricey.

As much as I love Lollapalooza, Pitchfork Music Festival offers as much music at much, much less cost. Might not be everything you like, but I found a few bands that I currently love there.

I would agree to this, except for the fact that they are basically ignoring 3/4 of the country.

I find it funny that NIN and Radiohead, two groups who decided to go their own independent routes, are headlining this festival. Now what they need is a Soundgarden reunion...

the 96 lineup will never be beat: metallica, soundgarden, rage against the machinge, the ramones, rancid, the shaolin monks.

I saw NiN at Lollapalooza in 1991. . . THAT was a farking awesome show. And the only one that Jane's Addiction performed in.

I already have tickets for All Points, so I don't know if I'm going to trek to Chicago as well.

Yes it has. We also have Pitchfork Music Festival during the same time frame.

It's been a circus for the past 3 years - I dont know how you can pack the entire Grant Park and do "moderately ok" - so I think you might be wrong on that

NIN disappointed me when I finally caught a show a couple years ago. I think my high expectations and the awful venue had more to do with it than anything.

I was almost 100% on skipping Lollapalooza this year, but I may have to go for Radiohead.

blueyd1 2008-03-09 12:34:42 PM
I will definitely be going this year. I'm still pissed that I missed seeing Muse last year. Who gets the flu in the middle of summer???

organizm 2008-03-09 12:47:52 PM
It's actually really simple. Lollapalooza did okay in the early 90's because Music was decent. Lollapalooza doesn't do so good today, because music today is pretty goddamned awful.

How many of you can think of 10-15 bands that are from this era, that you would hang around all day outside to see?

I can think of like, maybe, two. 98% of the music I listen to is pre 1997. fark this hipster, retro 80's, over stylized garbage.

i have to say this alot but it bears repeating-if you think theres no good music today youre doing a pathetic job of looking. the very fact that you say something like 'fark this hipster, retro 80's, over stylized garbage.' demonstrates that you have made no effort to locate good music.

1) Radiohead
2) The Flaming Lips
3) Air
4) Sigur Ros
5) The Decemberists
6) Black Keys
7) Arcade Fire
8) Band of Horses
9) New Pornographers
10) The Heartless Bastards
11) Sufjan Stevens
12) The Sword
13) The Hold Steady

There's plenty of good new music out there, you just have to put a little effort into finding it.

I saw Lollapalooza in 1996.

That's the year they pissed off all the hipsters by having Metallica, Soundgardem and The Ramones. It was great, and Metallica played mostly pre-Black Album stuff.

Rage Against The Machine played a couple of the shows including the one I was at in Tennessee. It was hilarious watching them look at his HUGE Confederate flag some guy right in front of the stage was waving. They didn't have the balls to say anything about it though, they wanted to live.

What qualifies as this era? All the bands I listen to have pretty much been around for at least 10 years (even if they only recently became "popular").

spanish flea 2008-03-09 06:12:26 PM
It's amazing how the festivals of the past were always better, yet at the time they were full of "new bands that suck". I saw lots of grunge and neo punk bands in the early 90's in my local shiatty club in not-sold-out shows when they were the "new bands that suck". STP, Pearl Jam, Offspring, Green Day, Nirvana, Primus ...

Maybe in 2015 people when kids see the schedule of the 08' Lollapalooza they will sh*t in their pants.

MoldyLoaf 2008-03-09 07:20:15 PM
Hopefully NIN won't play 36 consecutive songs without words.

It actually made their set better because it pissed them off. Great show.

Oh Trent Trent Trent...it was all downhill after Robin left/got fired. I saw them in concert in 05 right after Jerome Dillon left and left the concert midway. Needless to say, when I saw Tool six months later it blew them out of the water.

Yeah, I lost you after flaming lips, so I hit up youtube. Couldn't tell you how representative these are, but some of them were really farking good. Clickable links below. Popping goodness.

Dammit. I'm so pissed at Coachella for not putting Radiohead on the bill. Jack Johnson? fark you, motherfarkers!

Now it seems ALL the other festivals will have Radiohead. But none for Coachella.

As for that top 15 list, Clap Your Hands and Sigur Ros are NOT worth waiting all day for. I've seen them, gave them a fair shot, and they both let me down terribly.

However, it IS worthwhile to wait a whole week to see Arcade Fire if need be. They're just freakin' brilliant,

I thought Clap Your Hands put on a good show, but Sigur Ros was the best show I've ever seen. I was bummed out after seeing them because I knew it would be a long time until I saw a show that good again. I guess this means we don't have the exact same taste in music.

I missed Arcade Fire the last time they came around, but that won't happen again. I'm sure they put on an amazing show.
