"Zen Arcade" was pure masterpiece.

That and "VS" by Mission of Burma.
Both set the high water mark for American punk.

Seriously, what is the appeal of poorly played, lo-fi crap like this?

The punk ethos, I guess. Although differentiating "punk ethos" from "just noisy and sucks" is a dicey proposition.

I absoultely love Mould's "Workbook," and like most of "Black Sheets of Rain" and Sugar's "Copper Blue." So why does Husker Du's "Warehouse," bought on a whim to see what all the HD fuss was about, collect dust on the back of my CD shelf? HD fans are so ravenous about the band. I just wish I could see what they see in it. But I can't.

Yeah indeed Zen Arcade... I heard somewhere they recorded that tripping on acid...

It kicks your grandmas balls. Hard.

Warehouse was a letdown to me, but yeaah New Day Rising a close second.....

Anything else of worth?

I got into Sugar and worked my way back.
Why haven't more bands tried to cop THIS? We'd be much better for it...not to mention the whole singing vs growling thing. I hate growling vocals.
There's a shiatload of Husker Du on YouTube, btw.

I saw them a couple of time sin the 80s...those were some amazing shows. They just played. No gimmicks, just 3 guys that (for a while) had fun and put out some great music.

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-03-08 08:07:23 PM
I saw them in '83, actually hired them for my club for $500!! They played their asses off. Great show.

Think about Minneapolis rock this part of the decade: Huksers, 'Mats, Suburbs, Soul Asylum, and of course Prince... amazing all that greatness out of a small city.

You do realize that's not exactly a top quality recording right? Also their early records were recorded on basically no budget. Sound isn't great, but it's far far from poorly played. Zen Arcade is one of the best albums of the 80's.

And this, is definitely not lo-fi or poorly played (pops)

Bob Mould didn't get to be one of the most influential guitar players alive by sucking.

Yeah, that was my assumption, but it doesn't look like Raul's. Maybe Duke's? I played there once but don't remember much about the layout. Or it could be an out-of-town gig, I suppose.

Bought Candy Apple Grey in 86, hardly listened to it until I came down with the Russian Flu. Only tape in the house at the time and was too sick to walk to the car. Learned to love that album, I have have Dead Set on Destruction and Don't want to know if you are lonely on my ipod now.

My cousin works for the Minnesota Arts Council (or whatever they call it) and knows Bob Mould pretty well. She says he's very very friendly. I keep asking her to introduce me. I'll be happy with just an autograph one of these days

Holy Mary Tyler Moore, this is great! The band on local TV (Twin Cities) in '86. Check out the audience...

Maybe scarier, though, the band on The Joan Rivers Show.

Flip Your Wig is my favorite Husker LP. But I have almost their whole discography on vinyl.

I do admit that they were the worst-engineered band of their era.

While you are back there in 1981, take a listen again, in context to what else was out there.

And if you have time stop by my dorm and tell me not to get that postpunk mullet and to never date aspiring actresses.

If anyone thinks Husker Du is nothing but "poorly played, lo fi crap", go listen to "Never Talking to You Again".

/If you still feel that way afterwards, I feel very bad for you.
//And will show up at your house to burn your Loverboy records and force you to listen to Zen Arcade on repeat until you get some taste.

Ob Bob story:

Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, GA, 1998. The last nice thing my ex-wife did for me was consent to allow me to buy airfare from San Antonio, TX to Atlanta to go see Bob on what was supposed to be his last electric tour.

Standing outside of the Variety, just hanging out and shooting the breeze with other people I knew on the email listserv for Bob fans, I mentioned in passing that I really hoped I'd get a chance to meet him, to say thanks for all the music over the years and the inspiration for me to get off my butt and learn to play guitar. One of the guys looks at me and says, "You do realize he's standing right behind you waiting to say hello?"

Bob looked at us and smiled, shook my hand and wished me good luck with my work. He hung out backstage for almost 2 hours post-show to sign autographs, take pictures, and talk with anyone that wanted to talk to him. He's a great writer and a class act.

I clicked on the links, they sound very blah. Not bad, not good. A guy playing power chords and a guy singing unmemorable melodies.

masturbating_kitten 2008-03-09 09:34:01 AM
I have a Hüsker Dü T and wear it proudly and often at my local indie venues; have Zen Arcade and pretty much every other LP they've done (except Candy Apple Grey, which isn't that great - totally atypical for this stellar band); bought Zen Arcade for my little brother and am getting him hooked on the band too. I haven't told him that two-thirds of the band were gay yet (he's a fundie Christian). Thanks to several powers of 10 to the subby for getting the Hüskers more press.

Zigzagoon: flip your wig is the only lp i have and i wasnt a fan of it. im hoping zen arcade is good when i get it.

It routinely gets five stars from rockcrits. If you can get over the (lack of) production, Zen has tons of memorable melodies, and more aggression than Korn's entire discography combined. To get the full effect, listen at high volume. And to the dude who has only heard Candy Apple Grey, you're missing out on some good shiat, man.

If you're getting into '80s indie music, you *have* to read "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad. If you bought your records during the '80s based on hearing songs from them on mainstream (not college) radio, you owe it to yourself to read this. It's an excellent overview of this incredible period in American musical history. Once you experience some of the music these bands produced, the stories in there will foster an addiction of the most positive sort as you find yourself buying every piece of vinyl that is mentioned in those pages.

browntimmy: I clicked on the links, they sound very blah. Not bad, not good. A guy playing power chords and a guy singing unmemorable melodies.

Give "Girl Who Lives On Heaven Hill" or "Chartered Trips" a spin and get back to me about Hüsker Dü's lack of melodicism.

Uzzah: So why does Husker Du's "Warehouse" ... collect dust on the back of my CD shelf? HD fans are so ravenous about the band. I just wish I could see what they see in it. But I can't.

Warehouse: Songs And Stories
was Hüsker Dü's last LP (or double). It has the clearest production of any of their releases, but also sounds tinny and has that uncomfortably-close-to-mainstream late-Eighties feel, and the songs aren't as incendiary and memorable as their earlier work. I say give them another shot.

Great_Milenko, it is generally accepted that the group you got your name from sucked stinky goat ass, just as the theory of macroevolution is generally accepted. This answers the question of whether your taste in music matters at all, as does your statement that "lo-fi" music doesn't deserve to be heard. Kindly STFU.

And, by the way, I'm starting a religion that involves making a pilgrimage to Bob Mould's house, kneeling at his feet, burning incense to statues of him and spinning Workbook once a day. Any takers?

thesloppy 2008-03-09 11:36:01 AM
Bob Mould doesn't get the street cred he deserves...he was a gay, fat speedfreak at a time when none of those things were considered very 'punk', made some awesome music with friends (and enemies) as well as on his lonesome, booked some truly horrible wrestling in the WCW's last days and wrote and performed the theme song for the Daily Show.

gabba2 [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 11:42:04 AM
I like Husker Du, but I really prefer Bob Mould's solo stuff and Sugar. Bob lives in DC and is a regular at the 9:30 club, spinning music, and playing live. One of the best shows I have ever seen was Bob Mould at the 9:30 about 2 years ago with his full band. They played for hours and they had a professional video crew covering it. It still hasn't come out on DVD for some reason, but if it ever does....buy it! An amazing show! Bob also does accoustic shows at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis often and they are always great shows.

thesloppy 2008-03-09 11:44:06 AM
Bob's kudos are expected and much deserved, but there should be more Grant Hart love up in this joint.
