No, trains are cool. I rode one to New York recently, it was good fun, you can drink on trains.

They're great, when they're running.

Bloody hell...

But you can drink in a car too, which is cooler, because if you have a big car you can have bigger drinks; though the other cars can be a bit of a problem

Try explaining that OPEN CONTAINER of beer to the cop who pulls you over for suspicion.

I work for the DfT and as much all this track work is a pain in tha ass its NEEDS to be done. The rail nework is in bad shape. I dread to get on a train on some lines (im looking at you the whole of the midlands and east coast *shudder*).

morrisonsl 2008-03-08 11:48:36 AM
Ah, the British railway system. You got to love a vital public service that grinds to a halt every time there is snowfall somewhere in the country or autumn leaves fall on to a bit of track.

i was in the UK last week and had to get from canterbury to london luton airport to catch a flight. there was some engineering work going on some lines so it took me about 7 hours to get to the airport. it normally should take around 2 1/2 hours. they had us getting off and on trains and taking buses all over to make connections.

and until you go to the UK you have no idea how bad the big brother situation is over there.

I'm failing to see the connection between poor rail service and a hyper-efficient dystopian dictatorship.

Rode Eurostar a couple weeks ago between London and Paris. Expensive but, at 186 MPH, it's fun.

Probably as difficult as explaining sarcasm to The_Time_Master.

Oo-er! My mother-in-law arrives by train on the 20th and is due to go home on the 25th. She may never leave......

There isn't one, except perhaps that the rail service was run more efficiently prior to privatisation...

UK trains are so expensive I don't see how anybody can use them.

Top gear did a show where they bought a car and got London to Manchester there cheaper than going on the train.

Don't drink from a beer can. Use Jack Daniels bottle, screw cap on tightly, stash under passenger seat when you see the cop in rv mirror.

I went to England for two weeks and having the train as the major mode of transportation blows. Cost almost 30 pounds for one ticket and I get motion sickness so after having to do it a couple of times a day to get around/to London, you get to wanting to be in a car and/or driving.

But if it keeps those nutty britains off the road, so be it o.O

Canterbury to Luton Airport by train? Ouch. Would've been better to catch a train to Paris/Brussels and fly from there.

I'm a little confused. Would the Guardian rather they did the repair work over the work week, rather then on a holiday?

wsommerv: I'm a little confused. Would the Guardian rather they did the repair work over the work week, rather then on a holiday?

No, but Network Rail almost always miscalculates how long it will take, therefore, people are stuck when they do really need to use the lines again to get to work, etc.

British railways are probably amongst the worst in Europe. Try France, Germany or Spain instead.
