Thinking music sucks just cause its popular is about as stupid as being offended cause someone has a difference of opinion.

This. I mean they are slightly better than say Creed or Nickelback, but yeah, they are up there in the suckage category.

I think there should be a firm Fark policy that anybody who states, either in a headline or a thread, that one particular band sucks should be required to, along with said statement, include a list of three bands that he/she thinks doesn't suck. Then, responders to this person could post how those bands do, in fact, suck, but would in turn have to post their own list of three bands that don't suck for each band that they said does. And this would continue, on and on and on in a swirling vortex of suckage that would grow more and more powerful and all-encompassing with each passing moment until it finally became self-aware and destroyed us all.

A similar model could be used for television and beer threads.

I was just wondering if anyone could explain why the Dave Matthews Band sucks.

I mean, do they play off key? Do they not know how to play there instruments? Can Dave Matthews not sing well?

Or do you just not like the style of music?

I know I'm asking to be flamed to hell and back for actually admitting that I like the Dave Matthews band, but I do, mainly for 2 reasons: 1.) They are fun and put on fun shows, and 2.) I happen to like the way Dave Matthews plays guitar.

Bring on the flames.

Ron Paul Revere: The Beatles

It takes a special kind of suck to make a song like "Yellow Submarine" (as song which will cause me to live a long happy life if I never hear it again).

;p

/no, the Beatles don't suck, though I do think they are overrated
//Like many decent bands, some of their songs are brilliant and some of their songs are full of suck.
///however, I do respect what they did for the growth of music

mamoru:

I just really don't like their music. But thats the good thing about music. It's all subjective to ones tastes.

mamoru [TotalFark] 2008-03-08 12:05:43 PM
Ron Paul Revere: Their music is bland and plain with no soul.

Purely subjective. I was wondering if there was any actual objective reason (such as the things I stated). Personally, I find there to be a lot of feeling and soul in some of his songs while others are light and fun. Just like almost every other happy-ish pop band in existence.

It's popular because it's easy to listen to and presented in a shiny package.

You are right. It is much better to listen to music that is difficult to listen to. Noise is a fun genre because it hurts my ears making it difficult to listen to. That must make it great music.

Ok, snark aside, what does "easy to listen to" mean and how is that bad? Are the Beatles not easy to listen to? Is Led Zeppelin not easy to listen to?

To me, the only music not easy to listen to is music that is off-key and clashing with itself in a completely uncreative way and that song 3'33', natch.

I used to see them regularly at Trax in Charlottesville in the early 90s, back when you had to "get through" DMB to get to the band you paid to see (DMB was the house, opening band -- I have seen them in rooms of less than 20 people in the audience). Of course, most of the headlining bands have faded into oblivion while DMB has become inexplicably prominent.

DMB was barely a cut above Hootie and the Blowfish, but that was just because DMB had more diverse instrumentation.

/They suck because they make boring chick music.

If music be the food of love, Dave Matthews Band are a slice of untoasted white bread with nothing on it, served with a glass of water.

/If that's what sucks, then... uh, I don't want to blow.

Their shows are filled with hot college girls.

Need another reason to go? I don't. Besides, the tunes are OK.

I really like Dave Matthews' politics. He's a smart guy. It's too bad his band sucks.

Bandwagon.

When I was a child, other children used to say Wayne Gretzky sucked, too. You were cool if you hated him. This is more of the same.

/Kidding...just don't like his voice or songs or production.

How do you fans go through an entire show with singing like this?

Link

I have no idea what the hell that was all about. Was he trying to be soulful? If that was the case then he failed miserably. I feel ashamed to know that Dave Matthews played on the same stage Herbie Hancock tore up earlier that year. Plus it kind of pissed me off that The Allman Brothers Band opened up for them at Piedmont Park, to me it should have been the other away around. It just comes off as an insult to one of the best bands ever to be in that position.

There, thats one band that is BETTER than Dave Matthews Band.

I'm cool. I'm cooler than cool! How do I know??

It's because I hate Dave Matthews with a burning passion.

Why? The hatred is difficult to itemize. My official response to that inquiry shall be "I just do!"

Plus when they go on long trips they dump their poo on old people...

lerxst2112: I feel ashamed to know that Dave Matthews played on the same stage Herbie Hancock tore up earlier that year.

The first time I saw Dave Matthews Band in concert (1997), Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters OPENED for him. I know, it seems backwards, doesn't it?

Still, damn good show. Herbie Hancock came out and jammed with DMB for 4 songs or so, and that was just full of win.

Of course, I haven't really listened to any of DMB's newer stuff. I gave up buying any of their albums when they decided to go CCCD with "Stand Up" and that album sucked anyway.

That said...

How do you fans go through an entire show with singing like this?

You are right. That was bad. I haven't seen DMB in concert since 2000, but if that is an example of what their shows are like now, then, as a band, they aren't aging well.

bob4pres 2008-03-08 10:09:51 PM
DMB played in the club I managed in '95. I was instantly converted and remained a huge fan until around '00. I even got the next night off and drug my girlfriend (now my wife) to their next concert.

Each year since has been worse and worse. Kind of like finding a wonderful beer, leaving it out to get warm and flat and hoping that it is just as good tomorrow.

My wife even flew us to Seattle (her hometown) and we went to the Gorge concert in '03, she was hoping that their live performance would be what we remembered.

Now, what is left of my DMB CD collection is only used on the alarm clock...keeps us from hitting snooze as we don't want to hear it again.

luckybastard 2008-03-08 11:51:12 PM
I listened to a lot of DMB in my first years of college. Using Napster and the college network, I had so many versions of all of their songs. I had a good three or four cds full of DMB MP3s and just thought it was the best music ever.

Now I get a little antsy when I hear a song of theirs. I guess I equate DMB with that one stage in my life and so it's turned me off to the music nowadays. I still think they're very talented, etc., but I haven't dusted off any of their albums in at least four years.

For the record, I don't think they suck. They're just... whatever.

JJComa 2008-03-09 03:03:14 AM
Don't have much of opinion on DMB as a whole one way or another, but I will say this...Grace is Gone is one of my favorite tunes of all time.

nuronic 2008-03-09 11:00:01 AM
I caught the DMB bug once after hearing Two Step at a bar...it took months and lots of The Black Keys and Low to get rid of it, but it's gone now. Too bad the CD's and downloads I purchased aren't.

Saw DMB at Alpine Valley (outdoor venue) once. One of the best two-hour naps I've taken.

//yeah the show was the wife's idea
////I don't think the alcohol had anything to do with it.
