Ditch the washboard player that nobody can hear, get a bass player and it's pure win.

if you cant hear the washboard player you are deaf. amazing 3 man band there.

Sorry.

I am not so impressed.

More kids trying to be like old seasoned blues-roots guys.

Has been done and is being done right now ad nauseum.

They got some elements down ok--some other key elements are however, missing.

The worst guitar player I know (me!) sounds just like that guy when playing open-chord tuning.

Growing a big rustic beard and dressing like the Clampetts is NOT enough.

I'm going to ditto this, as we saw them Valentine's Day down at the Madison. Awesome show. I wasn't expecting much and they blew us all away.

Meh, I didnt really like it.. I can tell they're good, but it's just too much twangy folk.

I feel like I'd need to be a Louisianna farmer to enjoy it..

Oh man, saw them open for Flogging Molly in AC last week. I was suprised by what they could pull off with two people and a 'washboard player'. They were really good at pulling the crowd into it, one of the best opening acts i've ever seen.

/And of course Flogging Molly was orgasmic

I love this song, bukka white, aberdeen mississippi blues. Check out Bukka's version on youtube.

Don't you realize what happens when those old seasoned guys die off and there no new kids to replace them because you keep shiatting on their performances?

And you don't have to double space every damn line in your comments.

same here- saw them in worcester ma. not very long ago. Top notch.

Maybe that is why I began my comments with "sorry"

Everyone seems to like their gimmick but I am less than impressed.

Sorry--I fail to get it.

I find it hacky and contrived. Dressing like old blues legends is not enough. Go to their website for a full display of their obvious schtick. Rustic b&w image of them sitting on an old wood porch dressed like Ma and Pa Kettle.

Wow--they be legit!

Tacky and stupid to me.

Why can't they just be normal 20 year olds in some apartment somewhere who just happen to be really good at copying old blues style?

Bukka White wasn't great because he wore overalls.
Fred McDowell wasn't a legend because of his rickety old porch.

My girlfriend and I saw them on Thursday night here in Atlanta (yes, they opened for Flogging Molly). She liked them way more than I did. Not saying they're bad, just not really my style.

dogbone 2008-03-08 01:50:39 PM
Yup, saw 'em open for the Mollies and they were awesome.

I saw Josh and Breezy earlier in the day having lunch near the club where they played here in KC, and they were wearing the same clothes the went on stage in. They are who they are and they play a hell of a show. It may have started out as an affectation, but they're more than just a bit backwoods in person. Good folks, though.

craigdamage 2008-03-08 02:00:34 PM
I never said they "suck" btw.
Honestly,I will ALWAYS at least give credit to real musicians over the mountain of abominations that is the current trend in vapid superstar icons who are utterly sans talent. This Reverend dude certainly does sound good and is interesting (albeit in my opinion somewhat hackneyed) Go ask Paris,Britney or Lindsay "What do you think of Bukka White?" and you would get an empty and clueless blank stare.
Woooohoooo! I said ALL that in one breath and with NO spaces!

I did a show with these guys a couple years ago. They're definitely the real deal.

Oh hell yeah, we all rocked Hinton, West by god Virinia!

I thought this related because it's some slightly unorthodox guitar-playing: Kaki King live on Letterman.

Didn't care for it at all. However, that's personal taste. I won't say they suck. In fact, I bet that washboard player is well respected and admired by many other washboard players.

k, one--look at the dude--he's not just some kid; this is the real deal, and i find it kinda funny that you're so dead set on only appreciating your narrow definition of the "real deal" that you've missed it when it's slapped you in the face.

next up...
damn fine music here, i'm just bummed it wasn't mic'ed or eq'd very well--i can't understand a lot of the lyrics, and those drums kinda drown out the washboard...still, it's nice.

craigdamage 2008-03-09 10:26:46 PM
My definition of the "real deal" is basically this:

The real deal is the real deal period.
You either are or are not.
Growing a shaggy beard and dressing like a hayseed won't get you there. It might fool the ignorants but that is all.

The guy is good at copying Bukka White.
That is all.
(according to wiki he was born in the 80s--that is "kid" to me)

The day day Jack and Meg go on stage wearing overalls and straw hats or something is the day I throw all their cds in the garbage.

nice one--because everything is wholly subjective to your thoughts, you MUST be right.

newsy news: if you go out to, say, Cullman, Alabama, and enter into one of the few bars they have there, that, I guess, would be your definition of the "real deal"--low folk blues as performed by untrained musicians. having actually BEEN to places like this and actually SEEN the "real deal" (yes, i'm calling you out--i don't think you know what your definition of the "real deal" is), I can tell you this is as real as you can get.

then there's the other issue. if you're getting pissed because you're seeing an artist move into another subculture and play around with different types of music, that's another problem; are you really so closed-minded that you're going to say "OK, this band was raised in a rock n roll culture, and started out playing rock n roll, so they must always and forever be branded with that identity, and are forbidden to play with any other sounds?"

I mean, you can do that if you want, but it's a terribly limited view of the world, and i bet it won't lead to a great degree of happiness or satisfaction in life.

Real deal is purity.
Real deal is NOT from a tattoo, haircut or nose piercing.
Real deal is inside,no uniform makes you real deal.
Real deal doesn't know or care how much money you have.
Real deal can't be bought or sold.

If part of your real deal is the inspiration you get from old blues masters--fine,go with that. However,if you go up on stage trying to dress and act like them--you are a hack. You missed the point.

Please re-read ALL my above posts. You are forgetting something.

If you think those old blues guys were great because of how they dressed--you might be missing something.

They were the real deal because of what the were, not some contrived image they provided.
