What an embarrassment for the American People.

I just submitted this with a more salacious headline.

Goldeneye007 2008-03-07 09:52:50 PM
And now watch the democrats backdown and not do anything else. Just like every other measure that was passed by the Senate and the House.

I don't think he cares how evil he looks anymore. If he ever did.

You know what? I'm going to have to agree with the democrats on this one. In a time of war we can't unilaterally disarm ourself and cripple our intelligence services in the name of projecting a positive image to the Islamic radicals who are trying to kill us. Fail.

Everything Bush does now is almost quaint and humorous.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. We can unilaterally decide to not torture others like the Islamic radicals who are trying to kill us. It's not about projecting a positive image to them. It's about us being better than them.

Yeah, we better not cripple our intelligence service that serviced us with Iraq has nukes. FAIL.

So by stopping torture and trying to be better than the very people we're fighting, we're 'unilaterally disarming ourselves' and 'crippling our intelligence services'?

Bush knows he has nothing to lose. It's during those times, of course, that a person's true character is revealed. Color me unsurprised.

I'm all for torture by tickling them with a gigantic feather.

or by locking them in a room and having Earnest Goes To Camp on a continious loop.

pocketrubbish 2008-03-07 09:59:07 PM
Hell, even the CIA says they don't do it anymore. If that is true, than why does it matter to Bush so much? Did he figure his place in the history books isn't going to be in a decent light but would rather have negative attention than be forgotten?

pup.socket 2008-03-07 09:59:24 PM
Isn't it also high time to clear the reputations of the brave Japanese and German officers who were unjustly sentenced for mere application of enhanced interrogation techniques in times of war?

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 09:59:30 PM
You guys laugh, but right now in some enemy country terrorists are aborting missions left and right upon hearing this news. They were all set to attack our freedom when they heard they couldn't be waterboarded. Now that they know it can still happen, we're all a little safer.

maceinator 2008-03-07 10:00:08 PM
If this isn't just for show, they can override his veto.

My bet is they don't even try. This is just pretend politics as usual.

jimmyjackfunk 2008-03-07 10:00:15 PM
Honestly, what are the chances congress will override the veto? slim to none.

/seriously think about it. attack ads being ran: "the following senators and representatives voted to override the president's veto, thus allowing the terrorists to gain that much more control over the American people"

Alphax 2008-03-07 10:00:18 PM
Glaurunge must be a White House plant to spew that kind of BS.

And, of course, the worthless congressclowns will fold like a bunch of cheap lawn chairs (as always) and let this criminal continue to do whatever he wants. Stay on top of what YOUR congressclown is doing and vote accordingly.

Perfect headline, always pictured Bush as Gov. Lepetomane from Blazing Saddles, can picture Mel saying that line.

"Sir, those are dummies!"
"How do you think I got elected?"

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 10:01:07 PM
Truth of the matter? Torture is pretty ineffective as an intelligence-gathering device anyway. Nine times out of ten, either the intel is available through another source just as quickly, or is ALREADY in the files and whatever we get through torture is redundant.

This has been demonstrated over and over in numerous insurgencies throughout history; from Ireland in the 1920's, through France in Algeria and Vietnam, the Mau Mau rebellion, and others. Rear-line torture just doesn't work.

Field torture may or may not be a different story; but you wouldn't be waterboarding some soldier in the field anyway. Too much hardware required.

muslim_pakistani_guy [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 10:03:13 PM
Here is why all types of torture are stupid

If you were waterboarding me, i will agree to the following

I am Osama Bin Laden
I am Saddam Hussein
I am Micheal Jackson
I am in al qaeda
I am in Hezbollah
Hell, i'd agree to anything if it gets the waterboarding to stop.
Tell me then, why is it that torture is such an accepted practice?

Gonad the Ballbarian 2008-03-07 10:03:14 PM
This is gonna get ugly...

insert the "I Like Where..." photos :)

Hat Madder 2008-03-07 10:04:12 PM
If congress really wanted to ban waterboarding they would've passed a bill banning it, without anything else riding along.

Instead they bundled it together with a bunch of other crap that they knew Bush would veto, just to get some cheap publicity. Politics as usual by the Democrats, instead of passing legislation that will make a difference.

Wow, you're right. I would wager that every suicide bomber is just thinking "They are gunna simulate drowning me after I execute this mission." That will make them think twice about blowing themselves up!

Actually, I feel just as safe as I did before 9/11. Come to think of it, I wasn't overly concerned about those guys then either.

Goldeneye007: And now watch the democrats backdown and not do anything else. Just like every other measure that was passed by the Senate and the House.

And what are they supposed to do? The republicans can keep them from bringing it to a vote if they want. If the republicans let them bring it to vote, then the democrats will all (besides Lieberman) vote to over ride the veto. But without republican votes the over ride fails. It's not the congretional democrats' fault they don't have a bigger majority.

The Democrats typically don't have the numbers to override a veto unless Republican congressional members cross over, and too many are still too in the Bush camp to do so. Don't blame the Dems on this. The fact that the legislation got to the POTUS desk for signing is all you need to know about the Dem effort there. If the veto doesn't get overriden, blame the GOP.

Worse. President. Ever.

I don't know about you folks, but MY FREAKIN' USofA DOES. NOT. TORTURE.

Disgusting. Indefensible.

The GOP line would seem to be that the government can't be trusted to do anything except torture suspects, hold people in secret prison without a trial, and execute retards.

It gets confessions, even if they're not true. That's why it was popular with the Inqusition: if you confessed, you also gave up all your land and money to the church, so they made sure you confessed, and gave them names for more people.

cathanley 2008-03-07 10:08:19 PM
I must be very tired after my long day at work, but for a split second, I thought the "Do teeth whiteners work?" Question at the end of the article had something to do with torture.

They didn't have to attack our freedoms. The Bush Administration has already done it for them. And a bang up job too, I might add.

Check out what Ben Franklin had to say about people who would compromise their liberties for security and get back to the group with your report.
