You can't legislate good taste.

submitter: State ethics commission rules that state legislators are allowed required to act like complete douchebags

There. Now that that's fixed....

Grow some skin. You have no right to NOT be offended. None. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Bupkus.

/You'll get over it.

Tallgordon 2008-03-07 03:00:03 PM
OK, they were from planned parenthood. And they got offended when a Republican said that abortion is baby-killing.

The story is from WA. If that had been TX, there would have been slide shows and he would have thrown fetus blood at them.

Either way, when you come to a politician with a viewpoint counter to your own, and he expresses that viewpoint, you shouldn't report him to the ethics committee.

/subby=fail

BMulligan 2008-03-07 03:01:43 PM
Ahern's a giant douche, but this is an electoral issue - not an ethics commission issue. Retire the crazy bastard on election day, and the problem is solved.

Our legislature here in Washington are idiots.

Seriously, I stay for the mountains, rivers and country life...but our legislature is a mess. Most of them are Democrats...but the Republicans aren't so good either. Nothing gets accomplished in this state...No one can make up their minds and actually DO something.

HotWingConspiracy [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 03:02:37 PM
When one girl said at the meeting that she should have control over her body, Ahern said, he asked whether an unborn child should have a say, too.

"That stymied them," Ahern said.

That's because it's a farking stupid question.

Big Dave 2008-03-07 03:03:01 PM
What a total jerk - they come in for a discussion, and the rep just basicly berates them and refuses to be civil.

mrapier [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 03:03:05 PM
"I specifically remember him turning to one member and saying, 'How many babies did you kill this year?' " she said. "They were definitely offended."

Yea, he sounds like a real ass hole but stuff like that will only make those young ladies try harder, or they might mature into some real hardcore anarchist chicks.

Debeo Summa Credo 2008-03-07 03:05:06 PM
Wow. Douchebag indeed. Maybe the douchiest douchebag in the history of douche.

count chocula 2008-03-07 03:05:23 PM
sounds like the legislator is about as mature as the teenagers. i also agree you don't have the right to be not offended.

/douchbags all around!

bighairyguy [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 03:05:29 PM
Wow, some people sure are touchy about abortion. Who knew?

Anyway, he proved that these young well-meaning activists, were really quite naive and just parroting what someone else had spoon-fed them. +1 for the lesson in critcal thinking.

It turned out to be mainly just one question, asked over and over. As Ahern recalls it, he said: "By the way, I need to find out how many unborn babies were killed by Planned Parenthood."

Ahern says he asked the students that a couple of times, then asked their chaperone twice, then again asked the teens a couple of times.

That sounds pretty confrontational, and not the way any adult should speak to a minor, or a politician to a constituant. He's not engaging them in dialogue, he's forestalling any menaingful debate and acting like a petulant child.

animalmagnet 2008-03-07 03:06:04 PM
There was a difference of opinion on a legal issue and the legislator was rude and offensive. Even if that's totally true, where is the ethics issue?

So if you go to your state legislator about something completely unrelated to abortion, and he ignores your questions and repeatedly asks you about abortion in an offensive manner, not being able to effectively respond is being, "naive"?

memphomaniac 2008-03-07 03:08:29 PM
Repugs are too stupid to know there's no such thing as an "unborn baby" or "unborn child." Makes as much sense as "unborn adult."

Asshern needs a lesson in biology.

This thread should turn out nicely

gtraz 2008-03-07 03:10:52 PM
State politics is so wonderful and entertaining. Find the craziest person in the U.S. House or Senate, double the crazy, and thats the majority of most state legislatures. Hell, here in GA we have several guys trying to pass a law that would make the pill illegal. That should go over real well.

phuquetarde [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 03:12:04 PM
Nothing makes people more batshiat insane and raving like and insane loon then unborn babies.

Funny how those same people are perfectly and totally comfortable with indiscriminately killing brown people in distant lands. But if your a lump of cells - that's precious.

So remember:

Brown, far away, living = kill at will
In uterus, lump of cells = must be protected

Its not logic - its REPUBLOGIC!

Onager 2008-03-07 03:12:15 PM
I agree with the board, this isn't an ethics issue. It's just a lack of intelligence and common decency.

Even if your opponent is Satan himself, you're not going to convince anyone by yelling, flailing about, and covering your ears and pretending they don't have a conviction just as noble as yours.

Tallgordon: Either way, when you come to a politician with a viewpoint counter to your own, and he expresses that viewpoint, you shouldn't report him to the ethics committee.

I agree it's not an ethics committee issue, however, fixating on one contentious issue that wasn't even brought up by the other party to simply avoid all other discussion is rather more stupid than an actual discussion of differing viewpoints.

And I bet he isn't an unreasonable douche to lobbyists with campaign bucks for his election fund. :P

Good lesson. Don't discuss issues with Pro-Birthers. They can't listen.

This guy is just an asshole. Planned Parenthood has many functions besides 'baby-killin', like teaching people about responsible sex - imagine that!

This guy reminds me of the complete country jackasses that prevented a womens clinic from being built in Mississippi because 'it would teach women to be gay'. Time to ready my voting 2x4...

Please point out the "critical thinking" that would be generated by his "argument". I am at a total loss.

/He was nothing but rude, and it is beyond me, as an elected representative; what he was trying to prove.
//Except give plenty of fodder to his opponents in the next election.

memphomaniac: Asshern needs a lesson in biology.

They don't come out as adults when they're born. They come out as children, or more specifically, babies. I don't think the legislator is the one in need of the biology lesson.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but they were not even there to debate abortion being right or wrong..

They were promoting family planning and more funding for sex education

"I was just trying to give them a lesson on pro-life issues," he said. He said Wednesday that he thinks Planned Parenthood is "trying to refurbish their image by bringing teenagers into their fold."

Well, he made as much sense as the other anti-abortionists. I say let's give him a gold star.

Yes and if this guy had actually listened to them and utilized an ounce of brainpower he would have realized that sex education actually prevents abortions from happening.

Oddly enough, ater perusing his website, it shows that he sponsored a bill teaching firearm safety...to kindergarteners! So I guess he could ask lil' Johnny "how many kids did you shoot in class?"...

I'm still not seeing the problem here. Is he supposed to abandon he belief that abortion kills babies? He was elected based on his opinions on things like these. Sure he was a jerk but the should have expected coming into his office.

Ding ding! They never got to talk abotu what they wanted to talk about because all the rep wanted to do was bash PP for supporting abortion.

This was condult unbecomming a representative, and since it was an offical visit, he should have been fined or such for it.

Planned Parenthood has one purpose, abortion, period. Absolutely everything they do is related to it. Agree or disagree with them as you will but they put up smoke screens like every organization out there... There's always an underlying cause that dictates everything for groups like that.

Allen. The end. 2008-03-07 03:29:04 PM
