Whoever has the most delegates wins, regardless of Michigan or Florida. Their delegates are not needed for a winner to be declared.

/An inaccurate headline on Fark? It's more likely than you think.

Obama's got strength and reach, but Hillary is tenacious and bloodthirsty. It'd be like Lennox Lewis V. Mike Tyson, probably with similar results.

More like Holyfield v Tyson. A clean fight until about half way through, then one of them starts trying to bite the ears off of the other because they are frustrated and losing.

CNN got this story completely wrong. No one can win with just pledged delegates with or without MI and FL, but either could win (theoretically, though Clinton would need over 60% of the remaining delegates) with pledged delegates and superdelegates. MI and FL could just be ignored.

But, it's no surprise that CNN is echoing Clinton talking points.

Um, you still need over 50% of the delegates to win, not just 'the most', neither can currently get over 50%, which means multiple votes, and/or back room shenanigans at the DNC

Democratic voting rules are far more complicated then the Republican strategy. Don't see why FLA and MI had to be different and not follow DNC rules.

/State Sen. Biggie Slayer still a person of interest.

TheFoy 2008-03-07 01:12:04 PM
Even if they revote in those states, they're going to split the vote again, and since the number of delegates needed will rise as well, I really doubt that either one will reach it even with FL/MI.

Zoekan 2008-03-07 01:12:12 PM
Aren't Michigan and Florida both states without party registration (being a Michigan voter I know at least we are). Since there's only talk of redoing one primary (and indeed redoing the republican primary would be useless) wouldn't it be possible for the republicans to throw a wrench into the system by voting for whomever they think has a worse chance vs. McCain, making the vote unrepresentative of the will of the people anyway?

poot_rootbeer 2008-03-07 01:12:22 PM
squegeebooo: Um, you still need over 50% of the delegates to win

You need over 50% of the delegates that are seated, not 50% of the theoretical full delegate count.

In a two-person race, with an odd number of delegates, it is mathematically certain that somebody will win.

The delegates needed would actually increase if FL & MI were approved. Someone is going to get 50% +1 no matter what. the pot is just smaller without the two tard-states.

I posted about this on another thread. They conveniently ignore the fact that a) the mark is no longer 2,024 if FL and MI are counted, and b) the fact that neither is likely to overwhelmingly win those states by enough to put themselves past the mark. Plus they use loaded language like saying that the Dems "must" figure out how to count these states in order to break the deadlock (totally untrue).

But, it's no surprise that CNN is echoing Clinton talking points.

It's either this, or their reporters and editors are completely retarded and don't understand that the number to clinch changes when you add more states.

Actually, it seems to be CNN FAIL. Pathetic, or dishonest. I'm not sure which it is.

Hey Florida and Michigan, if my kids break the rules, they are punished. If I break the rules at work, I am punished. If you break the rules that the DNC (or RNC) set, then you are punished.

Suck it up and pay the change for a do-over. Else biatch slap your state legislators and accept that they farked you over, not Hillary or Obama or the Democratic Party.

Someone mentioned this yesterday, but it got me thinking that they did ask me which ballot I wanted, and I think they marked that down. So I guess in theory they could check the records and say "You voted in the Republican, so you can't vote in this".
Seems like it'd be quiet a mess though, and it might limit the people who didn't bother to show up last time knowing their vote didn't count.

DISCLAMER: Not my idea...but I don't think I saw it on FARK...

Why not have the candidates pay for it. If Senator Obama (with millions pouring in every day) offered to pay for half, and urged Senator Clinton to do the same, it's clearly a WIN for him.

Either:
- Sen. Clinton refuses and shows her true hypocritical ass-hatery, claiming to want FL and MI to count, while doing nothing to make it happen.
- We have a do-over following the rules with fair outcomes...Obama winning MI 60-40, Clinton winning FL 60-40, and they end up with no gain in delegates either way. Perfect for the front-runner.

/My someone else's 2-cents..

You'd be angry too if you've had to support Hillary for months and the chick you're doing it for won't let you touch her boob.

molineskytown [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 01:33:13 PM
If I was the head of the State of Michigan Democrats, I'd let the DNC insist that I share the costs of the primary redux, and then I'd totally drop the bomb on them.

"Sure, we'll help pay for this...but you KNOW who's got the first primary in four years, RIGHT?"

TheNewJesus 2008-03-07 01:34:15 PM

Yeah, but if they DON'T pay for it...who is screwed?

Aracnix 2008-03-07 01:36:48 PM
I have a solution.

If it is determined that MI and FL can have a Mulligan, then the candidates THEMSELVES split the cost of the second primaries, and put the names of both candidates on the ballots of both states.

Totally fair, don't you think?

That way, the DNC doesn't take the heat for it, nor put out funds they don't have, and the candidates both have an equal shot at the votes of both states.

Crazy?
