fijiankavaholic 2002-11-03 07:08:47 PM
This is going to cause a major tsunami in Japan. Ouch

RelaximusPrime 2002-11-03 07:48:29 PM
I think it's too far inland for that, Fijiankavaholic

lordargent 2002-11-03 08:15:56 PM
"The only damage I know of right now is serious _cracks_ up to a foot wide."

Ohh man, take that way out of context.

RebelRose 2002-11-03 08:16:54 PM
Lordargent, talk about a crappy mental image!!!

Voodoospork 2002-11-03 08:16:54 PM
If the igloo's a rockin'....

digitalchris [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:17:10 PM
All those penguins and rocks are going to need some serious counseling.

Man_With_No_Name 2002-11-03 08:19:17 PM
This looks pretty cool on xearth.

SchlingFo 2002-11-03 08:21:09 PM
Damn,

Farkers have learned nothing from movies. The only way Japan would EVER affected by an underwater catastrophe is if Godzirra was awakened from a long sleep.

Tsunamis?? What cracksmokery......

PeterNorth 2002-11-03 08:21:14 PM
if a 7.9 hit a major city, would that be disruptive?

Packley 2002-11-03 08:23:17 PM
PerterNorth, it was felt pretty strongly here in Anchorage were we have about 300,000 people (much to the amazement of some farkers). Not too disruptive, since real Alaskan's aren't afraid of a little shaker like those Namby Pamby Californians.

bbcrackmonkey 2002-11-03 08:23:35 PM
There's nothing in Alaska except a bunch of oil and a bunch of caribou standing on top of that oil.

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:24:35 PM
Sweet! This quake destroys the wilderness and the oil rises to the top! Go Bush!

FifthColumn 2002-11-03 08:24:51 PM
Holy shiat, a real, live, Alaskan!

SchlingFo 2002-11-03 08:26:21 PM
Peter,

A 7.2 hit California in 1952.

It caused 41,000,000 in damage.

And, the Richter scale is exponential. So, use your imagination :)

GregChant 2002-11-03 08:26:21 PM
The quake that hit LA in 1994 was a 6.5. A 7.9 quake is 40 times larger. So, yes, yes it would.

Some information of the Richter Scale.

Gear Jammer 2002-11-03 08:26:50 PM
Are the igloos built to meet earth quake standards?

Man_With_No_Name 2002-11-03 08:27:31 PM
Digitalchris: Penguins do NOT live in Alaska. They live in the southern hemisphere, city boy.

Iamsosmrt 2002-11-03 08:28:21 PM
Felt here in Seattle. At least that's what the news said. I didn't feel shiat.

Jeff [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:29:03 PM
Some really good info here: http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_lbbl.html

FifthColumn 2002-11-03 08:29:31 PM
You reckon we should make him squeal like a pig?

zieak 2002-11-03 08:30:57 PM
Digitalchris: no penguins up here (except for the occasional stray) they reside in the southern hemisphere.

Bbcrakmonkey: please tell all your friends that so they don't move here.

JerseyTim: the only way to destroy wilderness is to put a motor in it.

Frozen_North 2002-11-03 08:31:48 PM
We sure as hell felt it up here in Fairbanks! Every time I thought it was over it started back up again. :)

Packley 2002-11-03 08:32:34 PM
Alaskan? Who me?

diadelsuerte 2002-11-03 08:32:52 PM
yes, the richter scale... yet another log problem to be solved in calculus... curses...

Frozen 2002-11-03 08:36:54 PM
I echo the comment of Frozen_North...but just imagine being in Fairbanks on the 8th floor of a building.

For all non-Fairbanksans...that's one of the tallest buildings in the city.

AeroSquid [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:37:10 PM
lessee.....big one off Indonesia....one today in Northern Japan.......then Alaska....again...then Colorado....seismologists once again refuse to acknowlege connections. "Just a wacky coincidence" remarks Famous Seismologist. "We know seismology. Don't panic. Stay in your homes."

fangbeer 2002-11-03 08:37:32 PM
What are the chances this means that Renier is not too far away from an explosion I wonder.

ROCKSURFER 2002-11-03 08:39:10 PM
Packley

Just keep bragging, just because yours is bigger than mine. :)

DaedalusDY 2002-11-03 08:39:57 PM
I never heard of Major Quake, what songs to they play?

Iamsosmrt 2002-11-03 08:40:31 PM
Don't forget Italy, AeroSquid. It's a conspiricy. Or something.

dunkinbean 2002-11-03 08:41:17 PM
Major Quake Rocks Alaska

BAD PUN ALERT!!!

ChadManMn 2002-11-03 08:41:26 PM
Fangbeer, -scary thought.

AeroSquid [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:41:46 PM
Italy is not part of the.........*dramatic music* RING OF FIRE!!!!!!! *echo effect* hehehehehe

ROCKSURFER 2002-11-03 08:42:32 PM
Shake, Rattle and Roll is one of thier biggest hits

19Cranes 2002-11-03 08:43:43 PM
Any of you Fairbanks people know Rif Rafson?

Foaming [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:44:10 PM
Small quakes are fun. They're like roller coasters. The big ones like this are definitely Not Fun.

Packley 2002-11-03 08:44:17 PM
Rocksurfer: I was down in Venice, CA, for the Northridge quake. My first thought was "Stay in bed, it's just an earthquake." My Second thought was "Fark! I'm in California. Stuff falls down here!"

Acutally, now that you bring it up, I'm an earthquake magnet. I've been in numerous 5.x and 6.x's, all the major CA quakes in the last 25 ears with the exception of the world series quake, a 7.2 in Idaho of all places, and the Seattle quake.

Any Farkette's looking for the earth to move?

Frozen_North 2002-11-03 08:44:30 PM
We actually had another signifigant one up here a couple weeks ago, quite a bit smaller but it was enough to wake me up in the middle of the night.

19Cranes 2002-11-03 08:45:16 PM
Oh, and what's up with the nonmoving news tag? I prefer "news"

MetaPhyzix 2002-11-03 08:45:40 PM
Major Quake... is this an add-on to Team Arena? like a mod or something? Alaska has got to be a retarded choice for a test-audience...

Frozen_North 2002-11-03 08:46:42 PM
19 Cranes: There's an R Rafson in the phone book, who is he?

naked_man 2002-11-03 08:46:51 PM
That's it! I'm going to Pee Pee.

ROCKSURFER 2002-11-03 08:48:39 PM
Packley

I was sleeping at work during the Northridge earthquake, I didn't even bother to get up (still waiting for the big one)

19Cranes 2002-11-03 08:50:31 PM
He's my uncle, and he's kind of well known in Fairbanks. Cool guy.

Ishkur 2002-11-03 08:51:39 PM
I'm in Vancouver. I have never felt an earthquake. ever.

Not even the Seattle one.

Packley, you move in with me, I'll guarantee you'll never feel another quake again.

Foaming [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 08:52:24 PM
I was in Santa Monica for the Northridge quake. I tried to stand up, but couldn't because of the lateral Gs. In hindsight, staying in bed was probably a better idea.

naked_man 2002-11-03 08:54:16 PM
That's 3 quakes in the last two days.

SomeHouseDJ 2002-11-03 08:54:48 PM
Didn't anchorage get pretty much leveled by an earthquake a few years back. When i was up there this summer, i heard that they wont even make buildings taller than 3 stories now.

ROCKSURFER 2002-11-03 08:55:41 PM
Been in California all my life, earthquakes are a part of life here (duh), haven't had the pleasure of an Alaskan shake though. Haven't had one scare me yet, I lived in Santa Monica growing up, now live in Santa Clarita (right on top of the San Andreas) 5 minutes from sr14/I5 interchange (freeway that colapsed) during Northridge earthquake
