Agreed.

My high school girlfriend loved them. (Hi Tammi!)

/Poofles?
//Nah, that doesn't make any sense...hurray for cold meds.

You two must be smoking crack. I mean, I like the queerest, feyest '80s pop fluff imaginable (Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, A Flock of Seagulls, Spandau Farking Ballet, etc.), and even I think OMD is crap. "If You Leave" gives me hives.

RTA - it's not about what happened to them once they realised they had to make a pop album to pay off debts - its about what caused those debts in the first place. Interesting read.

I agree. Isn't it time for some Billy Squier fancy-dancing?

"Enola Gay" is a brilliant song. "Dazzle Ships" is a solid album. fark the haters.

/yeah, they sucked after Dazzle Ships but the first 3 albums were great

Be honest. Bowel Movements in the Dark never had more than 10 or 11 fans.

The very best of OMD was the first CD I ever bought. It sounded sick on my stereo, one of the first Aiwa Mini-systems (which wasn't very mini at all), and the sound is probably what got me into higher end audio at a later time.

Lameface 2008-03-07 12:54:44 PM
OMD was a cleaned up prep version of The Cure.

With that said Electricity was an awesome song.

Fousse 2008-03-07 02:03:20 PM
Dazzle Ships was a pretty remarkable album for it's time. They took sampling and looping to the limit for the era.

Junk Culture is pretty cool album too...

\Gotta love using a speak & spell as a vocalist

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-03-07 02:59:28 PM
"Dazzle Ships" is the only OMD album I own. Bought it for $1 at Value Village. Slightly warped, but still good cond.
Anway, I thought it was pretty good. Nice dark atmopshere... interesting [primitive sounding?] synths, catchy songs... neat interludes... and as Fousse said, they used sampling and looping as well.
It's one of my fav. "dark records of the early 80's". The others are "Closer" by Joy Division, and "The Final Cut" by Pink Floyd [*ahem* Roger Waters *ahem*].

Rev. Skarekroe [TotalFark] 2008-03-07 03:34:45 PM
"Genetic Engineering" is a really cool song.

farkplug 2008-03-07 04:13:20 PM
Dazzle Ships is amazing. Can't stand their later stuff.

KrustAsian 2008-03-07 08:43:42 PM
Big deal. They eventually made a song for The Breakfast Club soundtrack a few years later and were rolling in tons of dough.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-03-08 06:32:08 AM
Was in NY to see Joy Division when Ian Curtis offed himself. OMD was the consolation prize. I snoozed off for about half their set, I think.

Only thing I remember of the band in general is Enola Gay, which was decent enough.

I never realized Dazzle Ships was a flop. I loved that album. And will love it again!

Cybernetic 2008-03-11 10:33:30 PM
You mean they actually did something else besides "If You Leave"?

Jesus, that interminable song won't die. The goddamned eighties-format radio stations continue to flog it like it was ever actually worth listening to. Lump it in with the Thompson Twins and all of that other ridiculous British pop dreck.
