I've a gut feeling some people would actually try to complain about this.

I'm all for openness, but I see this as acceptable. What amazes me is not that they banned it, but that they were prompted to do so because one base already let them in.

reddsharkk 2008-03-06 04:31:26 PM
But are there any farkers out there getting their pic taken flipping off the camera in their suv? that's the real question. and can we see boobies?

Yeah, I don't know that I disagree with this. Not really necessary IMHO. And besides, don't you need to get past a gate to get onto bases?

Yeah, hi.. I'm with Google. We're here to photograph every square inch of this here base. You know, for kids.

If there isn't a gate, Google can map the streets.

If there is a gate, the best google can try to do is suicide bomb it.

Jeez, Russ, is this your Weeners you've done on Fark? Have you been living in a self-built nuclear shelter for the past 10 years, hiding from the Chinese? Yea ... nuclear winter can make things a biatchilly out.

Especially for attractive and successful African-Americans.

military bases or State College, PA apparently

redufo 2008-03-06 04:40:20 PM
Ya, they haz to ban it. Otherwise google would end up finding Osama looking out some window from a US military base, where they make the propaganda videos before the election.

Or maybe it will show them storing all that cocaine they import, or those pallets with the 2.3 trillion dollars that went missing on Sept 10, 2001.

Or maybe google will find that 747 jets that are painted to look at America Airlines for the next staged terror attack.

/Its not like we pay them or anything.

It's not like the Chinese have a satellite up there than can do this instead of Google or anything, right?

Horse is already out of the barn here.

jonr: "Just aim for the pixelated areas in google maps" All the important stuff is there.

I think the article refers to a new Google Earth service that shows panoramic ground-level views of major metropolitan areas. I don't think the Pentagon is complaining about the regular GE images from orbit (not yet, anyway.)

To my knowledge, the only area on a GE image thats pixelated is the top of the White House.

KIA 2008-03-06 04:42:29 PM
Not to interject common sense or take a non-majority position on Fark or anything, but wouldn't it take more sense to let people bring up the map, track those who keep looking repeatedly, investigate, get a warrant, then send over a couple of teams to take them down?

Srsly.

Then they'll find out how many times I check Google Earth to see if Drew's car is in the driveway, and come looking for me.

Many military officers, even high ranking ones, are in fact not necessarily assholes. If the rules allowed for them to map out the streets then there's no reason to make up new rules on the fly. Pretty much anybody can get into unsecured areas of military bases with a gps device to map out the streets.

It's nice that they actually asked first...

Nacc: We have Geraldo for that.

Geraldo has a new book out called HisPANIC - what a douche. I liked him better when he hosted his 'talk show' and they frantically tried to find out who was the baby daddy was out of 9 men.

Besides, google should never have been permitted to do that in the first place.

makes sense

The'd get lost in the data stream, proxy sites hiding IP addresses yadda yadda.

Besides monkeying arround with a camera on post after 9/11 is a sure way to draw attention.

The sad thing is I have a gut feeling is they only want to do this, so they can sell the plans later for a little cash on the side. Damn flu does that to me.

I know lots of fark filter stuff, just not all of the words and sayings. It'd be nice to have a list but then that'd take the fun out of it wouldn't it?

How does that not make sense? When I was at Bragg, my 1SG reported a guy we believed was a reporter that was wondering around in our parking lots taking pictures from his car.

This is pretty much standard policy...
