Stoatbringer!

Seriously though, it is strange that one organization seems to control most of the domain naming systes. Looks like there might be a change to that soon though. I hope it's for the better, but as always I am skeptical.

porn is already accounting for approximately 12% of internet revenue alone. nio reason why it cant rule the whole thing.

I think Amazon.com is doing a fine job of redirecting every ghuqing Google search to their exciting and informative shopping carts. Search no more. All your questions can be answered for 19.95 plus shipping and handling.

What happened to "Free information(and porn)for all"? Or am I being an idealistic dreamer? ;)

pike47 2002-11-03 03:33:44 PM
Icann, however, has two big problems [...] second, it derives its authority solely from the US Government, that has unilaterally decided how the net should be managed.

That's right, asswipe. WE invented the internet, therefore we have most of the control over it, and rightfully so. Quit whining about it.

fry1138 2002-11-03 03:34:19 PM
surely the internet should be run by no one?
maybe eric estrada should run it?

shiki 2002-11-03 03:35:24 PM
Nowadays when I use search engines, I get a whooole lot of links to which teenagers briefly mention whatever it was I was searching for, and then resume their angst-ridden, hormonally-induced-depression-laden lives.

Blogs have ruined the internet.

Even more than geocities.

Clearly the question should be "Who is running the internet?" and the answer is the Baptist and the Aliens are!!!

Since Canada's the third largest supplier of high-quality pot to the US the lets give them a try!!! Maybe we could work out a trade agreement like Pot for the net and call it porn or some thing like that!!! OMG Im out of papers and the wife is on the rag!! Thought: use bong and hid in the basement for next few days!!!

Al Gore after all he did invent the internet

EverythingYouKnowIsWrong 2002-11-03 03:47:48 PM
Who should run the Internet?

The United Nations of course. They're doing such a sterling job of quelling terrorists that they've earned the right to control access to all of the world's web-based assets.

Peckerwood 2002-11-03 03:48:12 PM
oops Sarlac already nominated Al Gore!! sorry!!

I think the internet should be run as an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We could each take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.

...or we could just wait for some watery tart to throw a sword at someone.

Squidward 2002-11-03 03:53:04 PM
The monkey who decides which links make it to the front page of Fark. He's already doing a good job of it. Just look at the two identical articles on Canadian pot in a row.

MY VOTE GOES TO DETECTIVE JOHN KIMBLE, IDIOT!

dattaway 2002-11-03 03:55:16 PM
Everyone who bothers to serve web pages and other toys runs the internet. Those who bother to hunt down and kill spammers rule.

Bongohead 2002-11-03 03:55:25 PM
"The United Nations of course. They're doing such a sterling job of quelling terrorists that they've earned the right to control access to all of the world's web-based assets."

Is this like the theory that the government is a way of taking the stupid out of the private sector where they could do some real harm?

Next time france kicks up a stint about the US killing terrorists:
US: 'You got the internet working?'
France: 'Ummm... We Surrender!'
US: Idiots.

Everyody wins! The US get to actually do what they do (rule the 'real world', and the french/europians can pansy arround and not have any idea what they are doing in an electronic one!

Forsythe P. Jones [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 03:59:34 PM
I'm with Rhiannon:

Houghton [TotalFark] 2002-11-03 04:00:21 PM
ICANN should do a "run the internet for a month" sale on Ebay.

verdejester 2002-11-03 04:01:09 PM
With regards to what? Domain names? IP addresses? I saw the question and the first thing I thought was since the internet is all computers and people are pushing for all this artificial intelligence why not let the computers who technically handle everything run the internet and have people come in once in a while to service them until parts become self replicating and and and and self repairing...like that plastic they had in Wired magazine and it heals itself when there's a hole. That'd be neato... till they begin taking over...

karpage 2002-11-03 04:04:24 PM
That's right, asswipe. WE invented the internet, therefore we have most of the control over it, and rightfully so. Quit whining about it.

Neither the ICANN or the US has any real control over the net. Theres nothing to prevent all of the ISPs from changing their name servers to a new root. If that were to happen, ICANN would instantly become irrelevent.

karpage 2002-11-03 04:07:13 PM
Here's one alternative to ICANN...
OpenNIC

autopr0n 2002-11-03 04:36:12 PM
