I was leaning more toward the whole theory not making any damn sense. It's like accusing a Planned Parenthood employee of bombing their own clinic so they could make freepers look bad. Kind of "tin foil" if you ask me.

The paranoid style is not confined to our own country and time; it is an international phenomenon. Studying the millennial sects of Europe from the eleventh to the sixteenth century, Norman Cohn believed he found a persistent psychic complex that corresponds broadly with what I have been considering-a style made up of certain preoccupations and fantasies: "the megalomaniac view of oneself as the Elect, wholly good, abominably persecuted, yet assured of ultimate triumph; the attribution of gigantic and demonic powers to the adversary; the refusal to accept the ineluctable limitations and imperfections of human existence, such as transience, dissention, conflict, fallibility whether intellectual or moral; the obsession with inerrable prophecies...systematized misinterpretations, always gross and often grotesque."

This glimpse across a long span of time emboldens me to make the conjecture-it is no more than that-that a mentality disposed to see the world in this way may be a persistent psychic phenomenon, more or less constantly affecting a modest minority of the population. But certain religious traditions, certain social structures and national inheritances, certain historical catastrophes or frustrations may be conducive to the release of such psychic energies, and to situations in which they can more readily be built into mass movements or political parties. In American experience ethnic and religious conflict have plainly been a major focus for militant and suspicious minds of this sort, but class conflicts also can mobilize such energies. Perhaps the central situation conducive to the diffusion of the paranoid tendency is a confrontation of opposed interests which are (or are felt to be) totally irreconcilable, and thus by nature not susceptible to the normal political processes of bargain and compromise. The situation becomes worse when the representatives of a particular social interest-perhaps because of the very unrealistic and unrealizable nature of its demands-are shut out of the political process. Having no access to political bargaining or the making of decisions, they find their original conception that the world of power is sinister and malicious fully confirmed. They see only the consequences of power-and this through distorting lenses-and have no chance to observe its actual machinery. A distinguished historian has said that one of the most valuable things about history is that it teaches us how things do not happen. It is precisely this kind of awareness that the paranoid fails to develop. He has a special resistance of his own, of course, to developing such awareness, but circumstances often deprive him of exposure to events that might enlighten him-and in any case he resists enlightenment.

We are all sufferers from history, but the paranoid is a double sufferer, since he is afflicted not only by the real world, with the rest of us, but by his fantasies as well.
- Richard Hofstader, "The Paranoid Style in American Politics"

You gotta love HOV. One random internet diarist makes a random conspiracy claim on the intarweb and its worth posting about as a trend.

But a multimegamillion dollar Fox cable television network brings in "experts" live to discuss Senator Clinton's "evil" body language ( holding beer in her left hand) and that's nothing?

Christ the crap is deep in here. I oughta make some outrageous claim that another website can refer to in order to characterize all of Fark.

Well, yes, to be fair.

But on the other hand, also to be fair, the article it's a comment on isn't much better... FTFA (emphasis mine):
Inevitably, we're going to start hearing about "left-wing terrorism" from the usual suspects in the media. And I'm guessing the drumbeat is going to be especially loud in this political environment.

We've already heard some noise about Barack Obama's purported "connections" to left-wing radicals and members of the Weather Underground. A contemporary example of a terrorist attack in the mold of WO will certainly inflame already rabid interest on the right, especially to the extent that it can be said to be "against the troops."

As for my own speculation, I'm not about to don the tinfoil here. Suffice to say that I don't believe any genuine "leftist" would see such an act as serving the interests of anyone but the political right. While random, unhinged individuals are always a possibility, I think there are plenty of other possibilities.

In other words, 'I don't want to say it and admit it openly, but I'm thinking it.'

ALSO, the comment in the thread *is* only getting modded up, and not tagged as a troll or anything... (5+ / 0- feedback as of right now, with 101 comments) So one could make a plausible argument that this is a theory that - if not actually shared widely - at least the folks over on Daily Kos are comfortable with...

Anyhow, anyone still reading Kos has my condolences for the loss of their dear departed mind.

Odds are this was an angry islamic fellow.

The idea that an American liberal could have done it is ludicrous on its face. The closest thing to terrorism that the left can muster these days is liberating chickens and keying SUV's.

As to it being the act of an agent provocateur, that doesn't make sense. An agent provocateur would do something more destructive. Why would the evil insiders who destroyed the World Trade Center to start a war for Halliburton profits bother themselves with a matchhead bomb at a store front? They'd be thinking BIG! They wouldn't satisfied with anything less than wiping out a complete combat brigade or a squadron of F-16's!

But it's totally okay to spout off Waco conspiracy theories.

Much as you hate to admit it, most of the acts of terrorism committed on American soil since 9/11 were committed by right wingers. The anthrax mailings to the press. The possession of WMD by William Krar with the intent to kill liberals. The mailing of white powder by a Freeper to Keith Olbermann and several Democratic members of Congress.

It would be totally unsurprising if the terrorist in this instance was a right winger.

I *agree* with the sentiment. A crazy person *tried* to blow up a recruiting center. The right *will* use this to demonize leftists -- despite the fact that anyone who blows up a recruiting station is mentally ill, not a liberal.

And you come here peddling the same shiat. Jesus. Insinuating that huge blocks of your fellow Americans are terrorists does not make *you* look sane.

And you come here peddling the same shiat. Jesus. Insinuating that huge blocks of your fellow Americans are terrorists does not make *you* look sane.

BULLSHIAT. Now this is exactly where you fail, and fail hard.

I've only made ONE comment in this thread so far, just one. I would like you to quote for me right now my exact words where I said, or could reasonably interpreted to have insinuated, that leftists were terrorists, or made any comment or guess whatsoever as to the identity or political affiliation of the bomber.

Quote me saying that. I dare you. You don't even need to search through posts, since I only made one.

If you can quote where in my above comment I said that leftists were behind the bombing then I will sponsor your for a month of TF. If not, then I expect that you will admit that you pulled that completely out of your ass.

Hint: I did no such farking thing, as I was only talking about the childish theory that *righties* were behind the bombing to make lefties look bad - and the prevalence or lack thereof of this view on Kos.
