They are a bunch of hippies, so...

Did they have any real hits other than "No Rain"? That's like having a Rick Astley Tatoo on your neck.

A Neckroll?

I thought that was like Ving Rhames, when the back of your neck looks like a pack of hotdogs...

Yeah, and no other big "hits" that I recall. They were kinda intentionally aiming for that "just buy the album" Grateful Dead dirty hippie demographic

FTFA:
Warren says, "It's like the dog you loved when you were a kid came back from the dead and just showed up back at your door, wagging his tail like nothing had ever happened."

So... they'll kill him with fire or shoot him in the head?

If it were a birthmark of Shannon Hoon, they might have something there. Tattoo, not so much.

/I have all of the Harvey Danger guys tattooed on my arms and legs. Not just their faces either; full portraits. I'd recommend it.

Reformed rockers Blind Melon knew singer Travis Warren was the perfect replacement for former frontman Shannon Hoon when they discovered he had a large tattoo of the late star on his back.

Nice to know it was really hard to replace you, eh Shannon? Shannon? Oh right.

I think the term "rockers" is used a little loosely nowadays.

I liked their album Soup.

As far as other hits go, i believe the song Galaxy got a decent amount of play, it had a video too.

I don't know about down in the states, but Blind Melon were really big up in Canada with quite a few of their songs and videos getting quite a bit of play, not just their one big hit.

/Still remember when they made headlines in Vancouver when Shannon decided to pee on the front rows at their concert here, it's possible drugs were involved.

Count me in the Blind Melon Fan category. Really dug their album. "No Rain" sucked compared to 90% of the rest of the CD.

shaggenstein 2008-03-06 02:03:00 PM
Soup is an awesome album, much better than the debut album, though Change is a beautiful song. Nico also has some great b-sides and a bluesy version of No Rain. I still can't decide if I find this odd or not that they regrouped, but good for them either way. They made some great tunes, and if people want to pay to see it, so be it.

They think their new singer is some kind of reincarnation of their old singer because of a tattoo? It's not sane.

Will echo the sentiments of some of the others in the thread...I really dig Blind Melon...has anybody heard or seen the new incarnation? How do they compare to version 1.0?

Blind MElon seems to be a point of contention here on Fark (what isnt?). I dont know why a band, who i love, can generate such a polarized argument. As said above Soup is a great album. I particularly like the song Mouthful of Cavities.

I saw them open for Lenny Kravitz many years ago, when they were new, that song with the bumblebee girl in the video had just become popular and the original singer was still alive.

They sucked more ass than almost anything else I've ever seen live - and I've seen more than my fair share of live acts. (another show I saw a few weeks later at the same venue was *awesome*. Kravitz wasn't too bad either.) They just simply blew major chunks.

Personally, I think that if they miss the old lead singer so much that they should all follow his example and fatally OD like morons. Then we won't have the off-chance of someone in the band sucking off the right record exec and getting another song on the radio, the auditory equivalent of them spreading their AIDS.

liquid duane-o 2008-03-06 02:19:09 PM
saw them in boston this past year, the night afer the 12th anniversary of shannon's death.

they kick ass live: great energy, and you could see that the band was really grateful there was an enthusiastic audience after such a long hiatus. they seemed like down to earth guys having a good time.

the singer has a an eerily-similar, reedy kinda voice, but isn't a straight up impersonator. he definately puts his own touch on the melodies.

as for their one hit wonder, i think its one of those unfortunate situations where the odd-ball song ended up being the crowd pleaser even though it isn't really representative of the band.

"no rain" was the only song written by the drummer. the rest were shannon writing lyrics/melody, the guitarists writing the chords. consequently it doesn't really sound like most of the other songs.

Rex Rexroth 2008-03-06 02:20:14 PM
I will raise my hand as a fan. Great stuff and No Rain was really not their bread and butter. By far my favorite recording of theirs is the cover of "3 is the Magic Number" from the School House Rocks! CD. Check it out.

Dude, you paid money to be at a Lenny Kravitz concert. No offense, but I don't think you're in Blind Melon's target audience.

Just adding my "blind melon was teh 4w3som3" vote. Though I'm not entirely convince about the new singer.

Also, they had the best School House Rock cover, ever.

That is an outrageous statement even if you were talking about a band equivalent to Drowning Pool.

Gotta go back and listen to their first as I haven't listened to it in a while. "Change" is good but for my money "Paper Scratcher" or "Sleepyhouse" were way better.

NorCalLos 2008-03-06 03:08:34 PM
No Rain was just about their worst song. This band wrote great albums. I was at the San Jose show with Lenny Kravitz back in the day, and Blind Melon were great.

Ashtrey 2008-03-06 03:16:28 PM
I was at friend's house back in, oh 1999 or so, and they had a Blind Melon album. It seemed pretty good and I was amazed it was the same band, but I was extremely high at the time.

Time to search the torrents.

I love Blind Melon. I hate stupid tattoos. Having a tattoo of a mediocre singer from a great band with one good album is just stupid. I also hate my "Van Halen III" neck tattoo.

lacrymologyst 2008-03-06 05:02:38 PM
blind melon's style really changed from their first album to "soup." the first album had more of a jam-band feel, and "soup" was more like an unreleased zeppelin album. had i seen them on tour for the first album, i may not have been that impressed either. wish i could have seen them on tour for "soup".

i bet mongbiohazard is really deaf, and wouldn't know good music if it destroyed his entire new kids on the block casette collection.

/kravitz blows the chunks

To this day Soup is still one of my favorite albums ever.

New Life

Suddenly everyting is fainting
Falling from a broken ladder's rung
There's a jolt exhilarating from the phone I'm holding
I hear the words of what I'll become

How eager the hands that reach for love

'Cause now there's a new life to behold
And its the biggest part of my life to unfold

'Cause now she's telling me she'll have my baby
And a faithful father I am to be
When I'm looking into the eyes of our own baby
Will it bring new life into me?

Deep inside must defy arrangement
I've been a stumblin' from the startin' blocks 'til now
And I'll always try to justify the way I've been behaving
Should I teach one not to know how?
How to live in a world we live in now

'Cause there's a beautiful life to behold
And its the biggest part of my life to unfold

'Cause now she's telling me she'll have my baby
And a father figure I am to be
When I'm looking into the eyes of our own baby
Will it bring new life into me?

Oh please
Oh please
Oh please

Bring new life
Bring new life
Bring new life into me

This thread is filled with people who've never actually listened to Blind Melon and base their opinion of the band on a popular single. Awesome.

Blind Melon was awesome and very underrated.
