Arguably one the greatest rock songs ever written. Inarguably my favorite of all time.

DeepApathy: Waters was the more talented one but still one of my favorite bands of all time

Well.. it depends on what you're talking about. Waters is a much better songwriter and lyricist but Dave is by far the better overall Musician. The 2nd era Pink Floyd was a great example of a band with members that complemented each other's abilities and created something that was greater than the sum of its parts.

It's a shame they don't all get together and do one more album (they could say it's for Syd's memory if they have to have an excuse). David Gilmour and Roger Water's solo efforts seem to indicate that they still could do it. The only one that is questionable skills-wise is Nick Mason.

Dark Side of the Moon
Wish You Were Here
The Wall
The Final Cut

I think they've managed to cover Syd's memory fairly well already, don't you?

But I'd be first in line to buy their next album.

In 1978, I walked into a music store in Sioux City, Iowa, where I heard some really cool music playing. I loitered around the store for a while just so I could hear some more.

After a few songs, I went up to the counter and asked for the album that was playing, and bought it on the spot.

It was David Gilmour's first solo album ;)

I have to say that Gilmour is probably one of, if not the, most underrated guitarists of all time.

If you don't believe me, pick up a copy of "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii" and watch him on "Echoes". Absolutely amazing.

Last night I was listening to an intranet radio station while cooking and they played "Us and Them" about the time I was sitting down to dinner with my son. I mentioned to him that "Dark Side of the Moon" was probably the greatest rock album of all time.

He was a bit startled. "I thought you were more of a fan of the Allman Bros, Steely Dan and Little Feat from that era," he said.

"Well, yeah, that's true," I said. "But, you know, I was a freshman in college when 'Dark Side' was released. I lived in the dorm that was farthest from the quad and had to walk past all the other dorms to class. As I walked past each dorm that year, I could rely on hearing one song or another from this album being played in someone's room. In the afternoon, walking back from class, it was not unusual for someone to have his speakers in the window, blasting this album out over the playing fields.

"And, I never got tired of it. Over the years I've heard it a thousand times and I always enjoy it when it pops up on the radio. It's a classic. It remained on the sales charts for something like 20 years. I'll bet when you go to college next year you'll hear some professor or art student talking about 'Dark Side' like I talked about my father's Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong records when I was in college. That's the real definition of art, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

I'm not much of a Floyd fan but even Floyd haters should admit - Dark Side had an enormous influence on the music of the 70s and Floyd's overall output remains solid and listenable even today.

Happy birthday Mr. Gilmour.

Where many guitarists cram in as many notes as possible in a show of guitar machismo, Gilmour lets his solos breathe. (no pun intended.) He says more with one gracefully bent note than 99.8% of guitarists can say with blistering arpeggios and whammy dives.

A class act. Happy birthday, Dave!

One of the moments in my life I felt the greatest rage and strongest urge to kill was watching this on MTV, because they cut away just as the closing guitar solo was beginning so the whore hosting the show could burble about how great it was.

Luckily, I had my XM radio recording their performance, so at least I had audio, and I got the video soon afterwards. But it was maddening. Everyone at MTV should DIAF.

I can pick out a David Gilmour solo from a mile away. He's not my favorite player, but boy, does his style soar. I've got nothing but respect for his playing. Truly soulful and beautiful...I wish more modern rock types would take this one lesson from him (and similarly from Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers): LESS IS MORE.

Amazing player. Shame his vibrato sucks.

David's first solo album rocks....
"About Face"...err... not so much...
[funny that "About Face" and "Pros and Cons" both went gold sales.]
i remember reading that one of the floyd's said in the mid 70's [i think it was Waters] that their records generally sell at least 1 million records on the Pink Floyd name alone.

I love his style of playing and his tone... no speedy delivery... just soulful.... kind of reminds me of Mark Knopfler's [or vice versa?] especially around the Brothers In Arms album... that sweet throaty les paul tone... [yes i know Gilmour uses a strat]

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-03-06 01:28:47 PM
His first solo album was like a breath of fresh air , just like "Dire Straits" [1978] was. Nothing bloated, pretentious.
just crisp and clear and wicked cool.

nick mason arguably still has the skills he had before. if you listen to his playing on Set the Controls from '02 and '07 with Waters he still sounds perfectly fine.

The same goes for Rick, another album would be great. The only trouble is that Gilmour has refused to do it, saying he has too much solo work to do.

/sigh
//Gilmour still looks like a teenage mutant turtle
///Waters is Richard Gere

Saw FLoyd during Division Bell tour (94?) I had just graduated high school and couldn't wait. David's guitar playing was second only to Garcia's in quality and gracefulness. From what I remembered of the show, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to and I've been going to shows since I was two. Also, it was easiest the LOUDEST show I've been to.

Love Pink Floyd, love solo Gilmour....solo Waters...ambivalent, more or less.

And to all you people who saw them live, you suck. ;)

Shine on your crazy diamond is got to be my favorite by Floyd. Such a graceful song.

The version Gilmour does with Crosby and Nash, while not the full version, is spectacular!!! It's on his solo dvd from the UK (can't think of the title!

Here's a good clip of it...not the full version, but still awesome!!!!

Gilmour plays his solos closer to the record than any other rock guitarist I can think of. Is it because he's not much of an improviser or because he thinks of it as its own melody which has its place in the song? I'd tend towards the latter as his solos are quite melodic and well-constructed.

I have to agree that most of Gilmore's riffs are constructed to be integral to the setting of the song. When you choose your notes seldom and cautiously, it makes it more difficult to improvise.

The best example of this that I can think of is the bridge of Mark Knopfler's Brothers and Arms. While the song itself lends to alot of improvisation, the bridge is always played with the same set of notes. Even the Metallica cover has the same notes.

Man, that's gotta be one of THE best guitar solos around.

Why does every PF thread have to have people bickering between Roger and Dave? Each was a master at what they did - Roger wrote amazing lyrics, weaved them around grand concepts and made Floyd more than just another psych-prog band.

Dave played a mean farking guitar, and that was enough to put him on an equal footing with Rog.

Dave's recent solo album though beats anything Rog has done since Hitchhiking, which is probably the best solo-Floyd album.

I disagree. "Amused to Death" is not only the best solo release by any of the solo Floyd's, it's better than a good handful of Pink Floyd albums.

And that's not meant to be a slam on the Pink Floyd catalogue.
