Well, at least Bush will be able to make a real comparison now.

aenea 2008-03-02 04:16:38 PM
I'm actually surprised that it hasn't already cost more.

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 04:26:48 PM
You know who else started a war that cost billions of dollars?

kmmontandon [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 04:27:55 PM
Yeah, but the stakes are so much higher this time.

Naticus 2008-03-02 04:29:54 PM

kmmontandon: Yeah, but the stakes are so much higher this time.

The answer is, Vlad the Impaler?

Hmmm...

DEA
NATO
MADD

Just for starters.

PeeOnYou: If you count like every business in America is required by law to, then we're already in the trillions for this war which is indeed coming close to the cost of WWII : $288,000,000,000 (source: National D-Day Museum) adjusted for inflation in 2007 via the inflation calculator (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ (new window)) : $4 trillion dollars.

It was $288 Billion in 1945 dollars. That is $3361 billion today, or $3.36 trillion dollars. Iraq thus far has cost a total of ~$700 billion. The $288 doesn't include long term veteran care either - which was a lot more expensive (more veterans). The comparison is foolish.

Plus the fact that people are looking at it from a cash standpoint.

How many people died in WW2.

400,000 and change for the US...About 100x more than Iraq so far.

WHAT?

Cat With Two Heads 2008-03-02 07:19:00 PM
Not more WWII comparisons. I don't get it, is it because we really like remembering WWII or is there lack of information regarding our other conflicts?

/let's start comparing it to the Philippine-American War
//torture, occupation, media manipulation, oh my!

Bush_in_2008: It's a small price to pay for Victory!

It is kind of sad that the Iraq War has bastardized that word...

WWII Victory = A safe and stable Europe.
Iraq War Victory = Not shooting yourself in the foot.

WW2 would have cost a lot more if Truman didn't man up and end the war in Japan quickly by nuking them.

/just saying we should nuke iraq and start rebuilding from the ground up.

scifarker 2008-03-02 07:31:05 PM
Personally, I think that the whole shock-and-awe thing was the biggest mistake. Bush leveled the infrastructure of that country from the inside out. He should have just invaded and let the existing infrastructure continue to run the country ... or he shouldn't have invaded at all.

DanUFfan 2008-03-02 07:31:44 PM

xaveth: So it's REALLY cost far less than WWII in terms of lives and money? ZOMG! Quagmire!!

Based on my math, 1% of the deaths and 21% of the cost. However, WWII got us out of a depression. Iraq seems to be simply exacerbating our existing fiscal problems.

Shaggy_C 2008-03-02 07:43:09 PM
TommyBahama: any data on the cost of Vietnam?

A quick search says $111 billion in 1969 dollars. That's a total of $654 billion today. According to 'cost of war' we're just about to hit $500 billion for Iraq. It's probably going to hit the half trillion mark tonight or tomorrow. We should have a party!

Trollerific!!

8/10

In order to get a perfect 10, you need to be a bit more subtle. I mean, nobody is stupid enough to actually believe that shiat.

El_Dan 2008-03-02 07:53:51 PM
I don't think the cost is objectionable. What's objectionable is that Bush lied to start a war, and that the US president represents the interests of military contractors and oil companies more than he does the interests of the entire US.

If we had actually gone in to Iraq with a valid purpose, no one would care how much it cost. So maybe we should focus on the real problem here, which is that Shrub's Middle Eastern adventure was against the national interest and for the interest of a few influential corporations.

The Why Not Guy [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 08:16:48 PM
Ok, I see a lot of posts telling me what we've paid in terms of lives lost and money spent in Iraq. Now can someone please tell me what we've gotten in return?

And was it worth the cost?

First part had a somewhat valid point, if delivered in a flame-worthy manner. I don't deny the points made for the "war for oil people," I just don't quite buy into it completely.

The second part is just stupid and troll-tastic. So, enjoy my offering of troll food and kindly GTFO from under our bridge.

I do love the comparison to WWII. Were there liberals crying about how much the war was costing and the state of the economy back then too I wonder? It wasn't until after WWII that the liberals, at the behest of the Soviet Union, became bound and determined to undermine America in every way possible.

I have come to love rote repetitions of Liberal Bashing Industry propaganda, not only because it's Dworkinizing the conservative movement, but also because it's so reminiscent of the authoritarian rhetoric we used to get out of places like DPRK and Mussolini's Italy.

Not only the cost, but WW II had so many better movies, like Casablanca, Air Force, Wake Island, Run Silent Run Deep.

And WW II had BOB HOPE.

That was a rhetorical question, heck, I didn't even use a question mark :P

/Point is, keeping people alive during wars is expensive. On both sides. Back in the WW2 days, people weren't all that concerned about hitting civilian targets.

Of course, that doesn't account for long-term care either. Anybody have any figures for that?

lordargent: Back in the WW2 days, people weren't all that concerned about hitting civilian targets.

They didn't have as much choice...bombs weren't very smart back then.

And targeting civilians did raise a lot of protest. Even back then, plenty of people opposed things like dropping A-bombs, firebombing Dresden, etc.

We also like WWII because it reminds us that there was once a time when the US fought and won just wars rather than our current streak of bumbled unjust wars.
