If you mean Philadelphia is full of overweight, depressed people who spend every evening in smelly bars, then yes.

/from Delaware, so I'm not really one to talk

If I had to watch/root for the Phillies, 76ers, Eagles and Flyers, I'd be drinking a lot of beer as well.

They might drink the most, but I'm better at it.

The bad news is, it's Philadelphia.

Boston is by far the best beer drinking city. All the Irish and Italians make it a no-contest. That's like saying New Orleans is the driest city in the USA.

I disagree. Living in Philly the laws they have here for buying beer almost make it not worth. Please note i said almost.

Except for the asinine bible belt bullshiat that dictates when and how you can buy beer.....I would agree....Monks is awesome..A little bit of Belgium in Philly.

blacksho89 2008-03-02 12:08:13 PM
My favorite beer is better than yours. It is so rare that you can not buy it. It is available only at the brewery. Everyone who has tried it agrees it is the best.

Avery Gemini IPA FTW!

Cider > beer

I guess, if you are a girl or 11 years old, drinking cider is okay.

Of course I still don't view fermented rice drinks as beer, like you find in all the big brands in the US.

If by that you mean a place where you can be punished under the law of the state-established religion for drinking what you love to drink, then yeah. Otherwise...

Re: the headline/article, in terms of quality for the price, it may well be right. $2 for a 22-oz. Yuengling = [smiley face].

One of the liquor stores here (Boulder County) has a door stocked with a constantly changing selection of regionals from across the US. And yes, I've had some very good beers from Portland. But I couldn't live there; I'd rust too quickly.

I think you've confused Portland with Saudi Arabia. You're also the first person in the history of mankind to confuse Portland with Saudi Arabia, so go ahead and take a victory lap (with your Philly cheese steak all dripping down the front you).

Ah Philadelphia. Well known for its two metropolitan areas:

Market Street
Cracktown Ghetto

I read or was told visiting the city of Brotherly Killing, that Philly imports more Belgium beer than any other city in the U.S.

I believe it, some really nice Belgian Brew Pubs there.

Toledo is the best city for drinking beer. The city is such trash that by comparison, even Natural Ice seems OK. Just imagine how much better real beer tastes.

I drink a lot of Bud/Miller lite.

And I completely agree with you. It is not beer. It is a fizzy alcohol conveyance method which I can still buy on Sundays. And it's cheap.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-03-02 12:31:00 PM
People from New Jersey love Philadelphia because they offer three kinds of beers on Delaware Ave: Coors, Miller Lite and that fancy Budweiser.

In the pic on that article I can see a little bit of the logo for Fin du Monde... I'm a snob and that's one of the best beers I've ever tasted. Delicious and on its way to 20 proof (9.some odd percent), I approve whole-heartedly of that beer!

/pretty sure it's a canadian brew-I got mine in memphis

I'd have to agree with the writer, for Pilsners and Belgians Philly is hard to beat. From a Left Coast viewpoint, though, only Dogfish Head is worth a mention.

You've clearly never been on Market Street above 38th st. There is no distinction between "Market Street" and "Cracktown Ghetto" there.

I really don't know what they mean by "best place for drinking beer."

I mean, do they mean the place where you really NEED a beer most often? Where life is unbearable unless you have constant access to that sweet, sweet nectar of the gods (though I imagine mead might fight for that particular distinction)?

Cause if that's the case, Philly might count.

But, if you mean the place where you have the most abundant access to lots of GOOD beer, well... my friend... Portland, OR has no competition. I hear Boulder tries. But... I have just 2 words to defend against that... Kennedy School.

But while I'm at it, let's throw in Rogue, Deschutes, Full Sail, Mt Hood, .... I'd say Widmer, but we're talking about GOOD beer... and if I say Widmer, it's a small step to PBR, and that's just wrong.

Even our Japanese Grocery stores carry good beer, and gold medal winning Mead.

Sly Fox has a killer IPA festival every fall. They brew 15 or so different IPA varieties. Things got a little fuzzy this past year - but I definitely remember some guy puking outside the window of the bar area. He got an ovation. Awesome time.

Pennsylvanian's suck

Their beer, however does not.

That's because ze Germans and the stupid Dutch settled there a long time ago and brought their hops and barley with them.

Otherwise, Pennsylvanians suck.

They can have whatever title they want. My local bar has over 100 bottled beers and 20 on tap. There are over 50 microbreweries within 10 miles of me. Portland may be full of rain and hipsters but it satisfies my Wisconsin beer tooth.

I don't know, having Stoudt, Troegs, Weyerbacher, and Victory all within 45 mins of each other is pretty hard to beat. I've heard slyfox is really good too, but I haven't had the chance to visit there yet.

Victory V12 is like liquid cocaine. It numbs your mouth and farks ya up.

choke on it, friend. PA has some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet, just stay away from the Philly 'burbs. Gated community jerkoffs. The rest of the state is fantastic.

The one time I visited Philly was to see a concert at the Mann Music Center.

My wife and I took a wrong turn out of the place and it was something like 50 blocks of crackdown until we got back to our hotel near Front Street.

Scary. Depressing. Philadelphia.
