Would thirty gross of mouse condoms cost less, because there was so little rubber used, or more because of the precision machinery necessary to make them?

mordantkitten: Would thirty gross of mouse condoms cost less, because there was so little rubber used, or more because of the precision machinery necessary to make them?

Excellent question. Don't forget that also depends on if mouse condoms are available in different sizes (church mouse, field mouse, at, Mickey, etc.), and the cost of packaging as well.

Don't forget possible startup costs if nobody yet makes them.

FTA advertised for the rodents, specifying that they should be female, white, laboratory-bred and weighing no more than 18 grams (just over half an ounce). Delivery to be arranged by the end of the year.

Dude, you're doing it wrong. All you need are 6 females and 1 male and you'll have your inventory in time.

I think this might be one of those "lets distract them by doing something silly" kinda conspiracies.

It's snakes. They are going to raise snakes and put them in bombs. Then drop them with a bomber. So it would be, snakes on a plane, so to speak.

Why even advertise/publicize, couldn't they just work with the animal research facilities at nearby universities to do this hush, hush?

The mice will be trained as spies, then sent over here to infiltrate well-guarded installations that nothing human size would ever fit into. They will also be trained to seduce mail mice to do their bidding.

I can say that the precision machinery required to manufacture mouse condoms would be a startup cost aound $120,000, give or take. Figure in prototyping, materials, tooling development and compound testing, add another $50,000 or so. The scales of economy would cover that pretty quickly if the market was fresh and demand was stable.

I could get rolling on a production line for 10,000 production units per month in three months if we farm out the packaging and sterilization. Otherwise add another $100,000 to the startup cost for that equipment, could probably get it off the shelf.

More. They are obviously specialty items, so there's no economy of scale. The raw materials would be the least expensive factor. Labor, quality control, etc. would drive the price up.

ElPresidente [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 12:11:31 PM
ArgusRun: More. They are obviously speciality items, so there's no economy of scale.

Actually, there are millions, maybe billions of mice in the world, so there is an economy of scale benefit. However, there would be a huge cost in educating mice as to how to use a condom, practising safe mouse sex, marketing, designing and building tiny mouse condom machines, transport, etc. Plus, the mouse currency (the Whisker)is very weak against other world currencies right now.

End of the year, huh? The US election year, you say? And just under 18 grams each? With no Y-chromosome in the lot? You know what this points to, don't you?

They're screwing with our heads.

This is close enough to areas I know a thing or two about that I can probably take some educated guesses. I won't because I don't want to end up dead and full of poison.

This is actually a pretty standard thing to order for all kinds of biological research activities, although the volume is quite high.

Constance Velocity 2008-03-02 02:49:36 PM
-1 subby. Nothing in the article says they were only FEMALE white mice.

nyil 2008-03-02 03:07:36 PM
Unlikely that the mice are for hawk food, actually. There are much better bulk food sources for raptors' basic diet, and if they were looking for something live for the hawks to practice chasing, why specify the size and sex of the mice? And condidering that the hawks are mainly used to chase birds, why train them on mice and not, say, button quail?

This is more like an order that would be placed by someone looking to test the effects of something, probably the possible teratogenicity (that's why female mice only).

The bigger question is why did this become public? All kinds of places order bulk amounts of rodents all the time; is there a mouse shortage on in Russia that they have to advertise?
