I thought we sold all the scrap to Russia. anyway, am I the only person who thinks it would be funny as hell is this ship gets sunk by kamikaze pilots?

Probably not the only person. There are lots of idiots here.

wow - no one has a sense of humor around here. It's been almost 7 years, how long do we have to wait to start making jokes?

Well, it's been 65 years since Pearl Harbor, and I still don't hear anybody cracking any jokes about it.

If they used the steel for a carrier, every time an aircraft landed, the government-planted explosions would go off in the keel.

(all hands don your tin-foil hats)

Hey...here's a good one.

This guy is hanging out the window because of the jet fuel fire in his office. His wife is watching the smoke rise on CNN at home. In a last choice of will, he jumps to his death instead of surrendering to the flames.

Hilarious!

Interesting, I'm surprised this wasn't turned into a bigger photo-op
"news story", etc for politicians. Given the 9/11 tie-in and the election year.

Heck, it's tailor-made for Hilary Clinton to show up, given that she could have a "legitimate" claim to be there as a Senator from New York, and they often have those dignitaries at events. Would have been a perfect event for her to try to show anti-terrorism bona-fides.

I'd guess the current administration probably kept it low-key on purpose to avoid that.

DandamanFL [TotalFark] 2008-03-01 10:46:28 PM
And technically the christening was this morning [news story with vid and pics].

Give me a f*cking break. People make fun of tragedy all the time, no matter how horrific. Think about what has occured in your life that was simply horrible on a national scale and see if there is a joke about it somewhere. Chances are, there is. If heard jokes about the Holocaust and the crucifixion of Jesus. To be this offended surprises me. I always figured that people had thicker skins around here.

/and for the record, I lost a good friend that day too.

Thanks for the link...

So I guess there were politicians there (seems obvious), and even a Representative from New York. Is Hilary dumb? How did she miss the chance to exploit this photo-op opportunity?

I guess it's more important for her to be on the ground in Texas and Ohio, but still... if she's heading to New York for SNL, you'd think she would have gotten in to this thing...

FTA: an amphibious transport dock ship, is 684 feet long, can top 24 mph, and holds a crew of 360 sailors and three Marines

Only 3? Not much of an assault force there, lou. Unless they've been hiding something from us about these 3.

That is tasteless. We should be worried about someone running this ship into a lighthouse.

Those are assigned crew, the ship can carry 700-800 combat troops and their equipment.

Question for mathematically minded Farkers. If an average is 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams (new window) is acceptable for a bar of chocolate what proportion of the USS New York is made up of human body parts?

Wonder if this ship will be as overrated as the city they name it after...

if we get into a *real* war, we just slam some more 767s into some more steel buildings, and turn the rubble into warships!

voila!

If that ain't a cursed ship, I don't know what is. Unless it was made of the shovels used to dig up an indian burial ground, piss on the skeletons, and re-bury them upside down.

I'm going to guess 0.00% unless you had a piece of structural steel as part of your body for some reason.

Hopefully the USS New York will provide some measure of remembrance and an equal measure of justice of the victims of Muslim extremism on September 11, 2001.

Personally, I'm partial to the USS John McCain, heh heh...
