In 2003, a government commission recommended legalizing marijuana in small amounts for personal use. But lawmakers never acted, saying legalization might entail loss of their country's U.S. anti-drug certification. Countries that lose it face economic sanctions.

Yay USA! Keep bullying people into limiting personal freedom.

They'll never be able to incarcerate 10% of their population if they do. What are they thinking?

He'd shoot the sheriff.

In fact, I'm pretty sure he did.

And nothing has changed since. It would be nice if it had, but it hasn't.

When you're floating in the sea just off the Negril beach and someone drifts by in a catamaran and offers to sell you ganja then by then it pretty much doesn't matter what the law says.

The same reason it is not legal all over the world - because of US government disinformation and intimidation, driven by commercial interests that pay for your representatives' election campaigns.

Ask your congressmen whether they support the ongoing criminalisation of marijuana - and when they tell you they do (which they will), ask them why. All you will hear will be ignorance and lies, driven by greed and corruption.

Hey if they don't do it, WE will.

As soon as we get our dumbass retrograde submoronic conservative government out of power.

Epic fail. Pot is illegal in Iran because of US intimidation? Yet we can't stop them from building nukes. Facepalm.

m2313 2008-03-01 10:20:04 PM
Pot is illegal because governments hate your freedoms. They need an illegal market to give their power structures (it's the DEA in America) and their prison industries rich. Also it's an excuse to do no knock warrants, raids and other military-like powers.

Doesn't Obama hold a more progressive stance towards the debil weed? Maybe he'd be willing to stop bullying other countries over it if nothing else. Then with any luck he'll legalize it so he can relax after diplomatic missions. Iran's not gonna want to nuke anybody if Admedinajad (was I close?) is stoned, I'll tell you that.

Lionel Mandrake: Legalize pot.

It's like you read my weed-addled mind. I love pot and can't stand reggae.

Don't even get me started on steel drums. No matter how you tune it, banging on a trash can is not a pleasant sound.

Even if pot WAS legal in Jamaica I wouldn't go there. I've heard nothing but horror stories about the place.

TheGreyPiper 2008-03-02 12:01:16 AM
You mean it isn't legal? Honest to God I never thought it wasn't.

RobThomas PowerHour 2008-03-02 12:14:59 AM
Just adding another comment to the many that thought pot was already legal down there

/reggae outside of Bob Marley sucks

cambie [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 12:22:00 AM
I'm going to Jamaica later this year, so I'm well aware that it is illegal, but barely enforced. It sounds like if you are caught with it, the fine is less than 20 bucks US dollars. And pretty much everyone will offer to sell you blow or weed. If you want good shiat, ask for it by name, like Blueberry.

JerkyMeat 2008-03-02 12:57:12 AM
legalization might entail loss of their country's U.S. anti-drug certification

America is farking retarded, fark what it thinks.

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 03:01:43 AM
Actually...and I got this from a real cop...if you just mind your business and smoke your weed at home, don't make a big deal out of it and don't do stupid shiat like carry ten bales in the open bed of your pickup truck, cops really do have lots better things to do than bust you for your own personal-use pot.

It's not the local police making a big deal about pot; they'd really rather be handling crime that hurts people and costs money. It's the feds/DEA going after the ganja because it's relatively low-risk and makes them look good.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-03-02 03:55:32 AM
Gyrfalcon: It's not the local police making a big deal about pot

That really depends on the disposition of both the individual cop and the force they work for. I agree most don't consider it a priority, but the 10-30% who do (pulling that number out of my ass as a rough guesstimate) certainly have the power to ruin people's lives over it, and have no qualms about doing so.

TheGreatGazoo 2008-03-02 09:48:24 AM
a year and a half ago we were in a resort in Jamaica, and we were almost barraged by the people asking us if we wanted weed. They had a weed boat moored at the beach.

mrEdude 2008-03-02 10:41:33 AM
Jamaica, yeah!

My dad and his wife went down there, scored some weed, and before you can say 'setup', the cops arrived to take it and fine them.

JAMAICA, it's A WIN/WIN for the cops and criminals.

/no difference between the two, really
//have met two Jamaicans in my life who were not scum.

Unright: Countries that lose it face economic sanctions.

The question is, would the upswing in dopey tourists (especially at Spring Break) outweigh the steady impact of the sanctions? Hm....

reddsharkk 2008-03-02 01:22:06 PM
if legalizing marijuana is your main concern in politics, vote for evol! how strange is it that the only candidate to say end the drug war COMPLETELY is a republican? smoke it if ya got it. if you dont got it, go get it.

Dyolf_Knip 2008-03-02 08:01:16 PM

Even assuming for the moment that that is all true, why is illegal?. If the cops don't care, and the users don't care, who the fark is it that is caring so much to arrest a few hundred thousand Americans every year for possession?

Isn't that the quintessential definition of a bad law? One that, if _really_ enforced, would disappear half the population into prison, thus leaving the cops with no choice but to ignore the overwhelming majority of offenses?

Sometimes I dream about reality
Sometimes I feel so gone
Sometimes I dream about a wild wild world
Sometimes I feel so lonesome

Hey Bobby Marley
Sing something good to me
This world go crazy
It's an emergency

Tonight I dream about fraternity
TONIGHT I say: one day!
One day my dreams will be reality
Like Bobby said to me

Hey Bobby Marley
Sing something good to me
This world go crazy
It's an emergency

Tonight I watch through my window
And I can't see no lights
Tonight I watch through my window
And I can't see no rights
