I know a few people who own their own snow plows. In New Jersey. Of course, around here it is illegal to plow your own street for some reason.

Quantum Apostrophe 2008-03-01 06:12:32 PM
Heh, just saw this on the news. Snow removal has been spotty here in Montreal. I often see the sidewalk tanks clean up an already cleared sidewalk, while the street itself still has mounds from the last snowfall. Weird deployment of effort from the city. Last year there was practically no snow, I hope the city has saved that money because they need it this year!

Yeah but I doubt those people are forced to plow their own streets because the city refuses to. This is bullshiat, these people pay taxes and and are getting screwed on services.

If I had a dollar for every pickup I see everyday with a plow on it I'd be rich. Only bad thing is their headlights sit up so high they blind the shiat out of you.

Why, pray tell, is this news? It's called a part-time job around here, and I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the people I know who have plows on their trucks. Or ATVs for that matter.

You might also be Coloradan.

The guy next store has a plow on his truck, does the driveway for me for free, just to be neighborly.

Uhm.. you think plows go around plowing EVERY SINGLE STREET in every single city/town? And what about parking lots of apartments? Not a chance. I can't remember the last time my street was plowed. the small streets get left out. tough luck.

bonehead800 2008-03-01 06:17:10 PM
How's that news? My family and three neighbors on our driveway have plows for their riding mowers / tractors or trucks, depending on who it is. This is in the middle of Maryland, hardly the frozen tundra.

Lots of people plow-snow as a part-time job, yes but they are contracted either by the city or by private businesses to clear their properties. The difference here is the city is foregoing their obligation to clear these tax-payer's street, and so the people are forced to do it themselves. It's the city's responsibility not theirs.

The last blizzard we had, the only way my road got opened was the farmers with their front-end loaders...the State was too busy keeping the interstate open. After the storm they basically said F-U. I was trapped in my house for 5 days.

And when the City gets behind because the snow's coming down too hard...sorry, this is SO not news. Oh, wait. It's FARK. My mistake.

Yes, they are supposed to, thats one of the services property taxes are paid for. I hate to get a kick out of these replies, but I work for the city. When streets are left unplowed, its because the city is hasn't gotten around to it yet, and they are supposed to do it, thats why people complain constantly in the winter when their streets are forgotten in Toronto, because the city and the people realize its the cities obligation. Plowing parking lots and apartments are the responsibility of the property owner and thats where contractors come into place.

geekybroad 2008-03-01 06:22:00 PM
Waiting a while after a big dump is snow is expected if you live on a small side street, but these people's streets have been plowed exactly once in December... and Quebec gets several really good hits of snow each winter.

I'd think that's pretty good reason to have some taxes refunded.

The Public Works Department calls those mounds "storage". Seriously; if they took the snow away, they would have to put it somewhere.

I gotta try to find the ad for the plow you can attach to your minivan or small car. IIRC it was made of plastic and looked like it couldn't push a beer can off the sidewalk.

Oh ya.....this isn't news around here.

We're working on that. Global warming and all that.

Fire up the coal mines boys and someone light the tire bonfire, it's a cold out here.

Or the Drew Carry skit, the one where he's standing outside with aerosol cans going to town with them. "fark the children, I'm cold now".

nyihockey 2008-03-01 06:25:37 PM
This article is stupid. You see trucks/SUVs with plows attached to the front ALL the time, why does this warrant an article. We have a blower hooked up to a tractor to do our driveway (which isn't all that uncommon in the country)

In Northern Michigan, lots of people have plows. Some folks plow the parking lots of small businesses to make extra money in the winter.

In Philly if the city decides they want to use your street as a dumping ground you're screwed. Better get a bus schedule and hope for warm weather.

The point of the story is that the woman bought and installed the plow as a way of helping herself and her neighbors. It's a story of someone stepping up to bat for the community when the local government has failed to do so.

The fact that some of you live up north and/or own plows is nice and all, but it doesn't have anything to do with this story.

Well we received another foot today and it is 17 at the moment outside so you better turn that AC way down. We won't see 77 for at least three more months.

I could use one of those. Massive storm coming down right now and I got stuck in my driveway as I was heading back from dropping off the wife at work (the hospital never shuts down!)... GRRRR!

WORST. WINTER. EVER!!!!

But did her grateful neighbours pitch in to help her pay for it? I doubt it, especially since this is Quebec, the leech province.
