the impatient crowd bum-rushed the costumed organizers and ran off with the loot. One person was injured in the free-for-all.

Bum-rushed? That's some quality journalism right there!

"I got pushed down and trampled, but instead of money, all I got were tomatoes," said a dejected 29-year-old homeless woman who gave her name as Christine.

Woohoo! Free tomatoes!

My friend and I were laughing at this comment which was posted on the Daily News site yesterday:

1 out of every 100 Americans are now in prison. What a country. As this story indicates, Americans have de-evolved into backwater, hillbilly scum who will riot for a couple of bucks and a tomato.

hipcheckgrl [TotalFark] 2008-03-01 02:28:06 PM
It's okay, though. They said that next time they'll do it different. I suggest squash.

From the article: "Tomatoes with money attached. Most people in the unruly mob who wanted to get their hands on the cash were left only with squashed hopes."

Wow that is horrible writing.

What moronic VC firm put up the money for this?

Meh, that's New York City for ya. But then again, if I was having to pay $1000/month just for a cramped 1-bedroom apartment, and had 5 million other people crammed up in a 1 square block, I'd be pissed off as well.

"Before I knew it, I was on the floor," said Anabel DeJesus, 17, who left empty-handed. "People were on top of me. It's not worth it."

That's why you ask for the money before they jump on top of you, Lady Chatterley.

yeah, that place is really crowded with tourists and students.
Ironic though that it was by the Whole Foods store.

FTA: He originally planned to hold the New York event inside Union Square Park, but cops shooed him away to the sidewalk because he didn't have a permit.

FTA (link above): The hunt was spoiled a bit by the rain and the cops, who told organizers they'd need a $5,000 event permit if they wanted to follow their original plan of hiding tomatoes in the park itself.

I see a theme. Prior planning prevents squished tomatoe costumes.

ThatsTremendous 2008-03-01 04:29:51 PM
From TFA:
As he fled across the street, his colleagues dropped their sacks and scattered across the park - and a wild grab for the booty ensued.

I don't know why, but that line is one of the funniest sentences I've ever seen in a newspaper.

FarmRaisedWinglessQuailtard 2008-03-01 04:34:28 PM
He will get more publicity out of this, than had people just took the money in a civil way.

Tommy Moo 2008-03-01 04:56:34 PM
Seriously... you're gonna start a riot over a bunch of $1 bills? Look at the pic in the article.

Yeah, I mean, I'm happy it wasn't some poor lacky in those costumes. At least it was the people who actually organized this retarded event. They got what was coming to them...

I mean to be stupid enough to not get a permit and piss off the cops while carrying bags full of cash that you say is for people to take - BUT you only have a limited amount, so if you wait your turn, like a nice, orderly person, you might not get anything! Whoops!

In Union Square.

I mean, really?

As opposed to money you have to trade goods or services for, I would suppose.

The hipster boys in Union Square need the cash for their thrift store girls jeans and Parliament Lights, right?

I mean, the $1,000/mo allowance and rent paid by their parents just couldn't possibly be enough for one person to live on.

"As he fled across the street, his colleagues dropped their sacks and scattered across the park - and a wild grab for the booty ensued."

Farkworthy line.
