This reminds me of a clip I watched some time back with John Entwistle's bass isolated during this song. Pretty cool.

millifoo: Roger's the shiate. Then and Now (um, at the same time).

They're able to do that because they play with a pre-recorded track. They do this for several songs. I forget whether it's Baba O'Riley or WOn't get Fooled Again, but before the song starts, you hear a sound that sounds like someone dropped a brick. It's a cue to the drummer.

For the most obvious examples of their playing with a backing track, watch the Who on the Concert for New York video. They play three songs that they use backing tracks for: Fooled, Baba, and Who Are You. On Who Are You, you can hear those trademark backing vocal harmonies, even when they're away from the mikes.

Oh, and happy birthday, Roger, you've brought me hours of enjoyment.

I know we had a line of this posted already, but it's my favorite Who song. What a great celebration of the audience and it's ending to Tommy...

Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat.
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat.
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!

Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat (heat).
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Ohhhhh, listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat.
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.

I remember the link.

There's also the other video on YouTube that's from the same gig and same song but different camera angles...with the band playing the full song.

You can actually open two windows and watch them side by side, or listen side by side...and /or with isolated bass.

Great performances. Would love to have seen a camera and isolated audio on Moon as well.

Amen, my friend. The Who was easily the finest melding of four Type-A personalities with the skills to back it up. It's just a shame that The Ox was drowned out so often. His bass lines were simply amazing, but getting buried at the bottom of the music pile makes it tough to get the respect one deserves.

My fav. Roger Daltry Who songs are all from "Quadrophenia":

"Dr. Jimmy" - diff. vocal styles but they're all great. ie. "Tough/Growly-sounding" Rog [ie. the verses that start with "What is it? I'll take it", and "You say she's a virgin...", see also ::: "Wont' Get Fooled Again", and "Who are You?" song, the latter for perhaps the definitive "Tough" Rog sounding track].
and "Melodic-sweet sounding" Rog ie. "is it me, for a moment? the stars are falling...."

And, of course, "Love, Reign O'er Me".
[when I first heard it, I thought he said "Love, Rain Over Me", which kinda made sense, because there's a rain storm at the begining of the track/end of "The Rock".]
Probably the definitive rock vocal track of the early 70's?
Nuff Said.

Most over rated band of all time, maybe 2 ok songs the rest suck ass and they sucked live

And I figured that his favorite song would be this POS:
# The Lost Boys (1987) - Performed "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me."

The Who, with Keith Moon, were the greatest band ever. The speed fueled punk of their early work (I Can't Explain, My Generation, Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere, etc.). The most underrated album of 1967, the pop art/psychadelia fueled The Who Sell Out. Tommy, the first rock opera/concept album. The best live album ever Live at Leeds. They pioneered the use of the synthesizer in rock and roll with Who's Next that not only featured Baba O' Reilly and Won't Get Fooled Again and Behind Blue Eyes but also the quintessential John Entwistle track My Wife. Quadrophenia, perhaps the greatest rock album of all time because it wan't only rock and roll but it was about the people who loved rock and roll, the My Generation angst of adolescents every where, in every decade. With Moon, Daltrey, Entwistle, and Townshend the sum of the parts added up to a whole in a way that has not happened since. Happy Birthday Roger!!!

Who fan
Can you tell?

BEST DOUBLE STUDIO ALBUM EVER PRODUCED. Great horns, guitars, vocals, songs. Production was 15 years ahead of it's time.

Wow if you are going to try and insult someone, at least be original The Who was an average band in the era of arena rock with piss poor songs, a horrible live singer, and a pedophile on guitar.

DrBenway: It's the Birthday Troll!!! Everybody make a wish!

Not a troll, I truly hate the who and think they have about as much musical influence as KISS, all the suckage and pretentiousness to boot in one band.

You can always fall back on the troll gig if village idiot doesn't pan out. You seriously think that The Who and Kiss are on the same plane as musical influences? An MRI might be in order if your insurance will cover it.

Weird. After checking IMDB I see that Tommy came out in 1975. I would have been about 14 when I saw it, but I only have a vague memory of it. The Exorcist came out 2 years earlier and I remember that one a bit more clearly. I do, however, remember vividly seeing the Who on the Midnight Special and especially the mad mic swinging skills of Roger Daltrey. The Who rocks. I'm going to go find I can't Explain on the youtube...

Original like saying a band is over rated.

I like how Daltrey is basically a thug. Without music, he'd be laying down concrete, drinking at the pub, falling behind on his rent, getting into street brawls...and say what you might about his voice, can you picture anyone else singing for The Who??

GalleyWench 2008-03-01 02:26:21 PM
Hmmm, it might have been Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, but I can't find a clip of them on either.. maybe it was SNL.

Wasn't he a steelworker before he started singing for them?

dereksmalls 2008-03-01 05:06:08 PM
Daltrey was a ditch digger and sheet metal worker.

Steaming Pile has obviously never listened to Live At Leeds or Who's Next

In the '78 clip, Moonie struggling to keep up and not blow it,
sad.
Saw em in '69, '73,,,

The Who with the original line-up ruled.

However, I can never forgive Daltrey for shooting Professor Maximillian Arturo. Oh, and for sucking his brains out with a hypodermic. That shiat was uncalled for.

OK, your non-trolliness: Can you perhaps grace us with a band YOU think has had a lasting, meaningful musical influence and is very lean on "suckage" and "pretentiousness"? Failure to reply will be considered an admission of trolldom now and for all time. Go.

Those are good too... there's really only one or two tracks on Quadrophenia that I don't like as much as all the rest...

BEST DOUBLE STUDIO ALBUM EVER PRODUCED. Great horns, guitars, vocals, songs. Production was 15 years ahead of it's time.

THIS!
[I would have to agree with you there!]

However, IMHO anyway, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis is way up there as well... both are in my top 3 or top 5 [double albums] anyway...

......Wait a minute!!..... didn't Pete Townshend sing lead on "I am One"?? I swear that's his voice on that track...

btw, a few of my other top double albums [from the 70's anyway] would be:
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John
and
Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes
