A while back, George Martin created a tribute album enlisting the help of a bunch of different celebs and artists. In an act of pure brilliance, it was decided that Jim Carrey would sing "I am the Walrus". As strange as this sounds, I think Jim's version is much better than Johns. Probably because this was released back towards the Mask/Ace Ventura days; and his personality just seemed to fit the song. That album as a whole is pretty good. The Goldie Hawn song sucks bigtime, but the rest is good; or at least fun IMHO.

Frank Zappa also did a cover, I think Napoleon Brock Murphy sang it, anyways it a hard song to ruin, having such a great lyrical flow and all. I guess that is why I am surprised to learnt that the lyrics were written over such a large stretch of time. Thanks subby!

Best cover?

Leo Sayer.

It's "dripping FROM a dead dog's eye." :P

My particular favorite line is
"Semolina pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hari Krishna, man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe."

It all sings so well, once you succeed in ignoring the fact that the words themselves make no sense. John Lennon was great at that.

BonesJackson 2008-02-29 12:31:43 AM
"Dylan got away with murder"
"I can write this crap"

haha

I don't necessarily agree or disagree with that, but it made me laugh. At least Lennon was honest about his writing.

carmody 2008-02-29 01:05:05 AM
Then there was Joe "Pop-O" Pie's version, in which "man you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe" became "man you should have seen the Pistols in '78" and at the end Joe just blathered "Smoke pot! Smoke pot! Everybody smoke pot!" over the chaos.

I hope you avoided the Spooky Tooth version. Every time I hear it I can't help but think of that cheesy band from Billy Madison.

Beatles fans have heard and read this interview for 28+ years, but it doesn't mean that it's really the truth. Over time, Lennon's recollections of the 60's have proven to be false or re-Imagined (pun intended) on many occasions (read the Beatles' Anthology book if you don't believe that).

If you really want to know what I Am The Walrus means (and it does have a lot of meaning), read Ian MacDonald's book Revolution in the Head. It contains the best explanation of I Am The Walrus that I've ever read, and I have a considerable library of Beatles books. Too bad MacDonald is no longer with us. Sigh. Oh, and Lennon too.

Man, I can remember hearing this on the radio for the first time - seventh grade and the world was really changing.

I still have the two 45s I bought the next week: Penny Lane b/w Strawberry Fields Forever and I am the Walrus b/w Hello Goodbye. Pretty much the peak of the pop/rock era.

I am not saying Lennon didn't change his story or may not have remembered correctly, but why should I someone named Ian MacDonald when he writes a book saying explaining the song? Was here there? Did he know John? Why is his memory better than Lennon? Perhaps he was just trying to sell books?

I think I'll take Lennon's word on this...

Buy the book and read it, and you'll understand why.

/his analysis of Revolution #9 is incredible -- no wonder he chose to incorporate that into the book's title...

From the biography I read, that was a pretty farked up period in John's life. He was becoming more disillusioned with the Beatles because Paul seemed to be coming up with ideas for projects that to him were complete BS. One of them was the Apple Boutique. One was the Magical Mystery Tour.
John suffered from writers block a good deal of the time ("Seriously. The first line sat on the typewriter for three weeks..". With no gigging or touring, and nothing but time on his hands (divorce, and post divorce) he spent days drinking and drugging, while George worked on his spiritual quest, Ringo enjoyed life at home, and Paul traveled in disguise trying to get affiliated with the "in crowd."
John was utterly bored. Brian Epstein's death was the nail in the coffin for the Beatles. Paul's positive dogging grew more and more irritating.

Paul is 10,000 times the musician John was. Paul would still have have made it big without John, but John would not have made it big without Paul.

Seriously, do you even listen to the music? McCartney writes a melody better than anyone.

bunner [TotalFark] 2008-03-03 02:53:49 AM
The Beatles were cool because they just kept being who they are and writing about what they felt and thought and from their own perspective but they used their imaginations.

They didn't have the addiction album, the recovery album, the rehab album, the "the road is such a drag" album.. they just wrote songs about what they were doing and their views on things.

Seems to have been a good formula. This is because it wasn't one.
