dickkead: Sir. Elton John

I think it's a bit late to go imposing roles on him, isn't it?

/so, what's the cutoff on dressing up like Marie Antoinette?
//I'd hate to miss it

So he can't be on the politics tab today with the politicians being dressed like goofballs by other countries' leaders?

rapidbunny 2008-02-26 02:55:45 PM
now he only dresses up as the pitcher or the catcher.

Elton John as Donald Duck? In other words, wearing a sailor shirt and no pants? Do not want.

Say what you will about him, but before 1980 or so, Elton was one of the best.

Sir Elton John has turned his back on his flamboyant wardrobe, after deeming his wacky clothes inappropriate for a 60-year-old.

I thought he did that 20 years ago with Reg Strikes Back.

Say what you will about him, but before 1980 or so, Elton was one of the best.

I agree -- for the first decade of his career he was one of the greats. Then he was an ex-great for 30 years. The Captain and the Kid is a big improvement.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I saw him a few years ago. I enjoyed it much more than I expected, it was actually a very good show.

Well, I was more referring to his song writing with Bernie to be honest. I expect him to still be an incredible performer.

THIS.

I think his output from about 1971-1975 is [mostly] F***ing great. [Tumbleweed to Captain Fantastic].
He basically put out 2 albums a year [due to his and Bernie's Contract] in that time period.
Then it went downhill very fast -1976-1980]
ie. Rock of the Westies:

Blue Moves: long, boring, and depressing, except with a few highlights: "Tonight", "One Horse Town", "Crazy Water", "Sorry Seems...", "Idol", etc. It should've been a single LP, but i think it was a double because of contractual obligations...]

A Single Man: A few good songs, but overall nothing to write home about.

Victim of Love: Don't get me started on this album. Four words: Elton's Disco/Dance Record.

21 at 33: meh. it's ok. one or two good songs, the rest not very good quality... sometimes verging into adult. contemp.

The Fox: Better than the last one. For me, the highlights are: "Breaking Down Barriers", "Heart in the Right Place", "Carla - Etude", "Chloe", "Elton's Song", and "the Fox."

a Brief Rebound into Greatness:
Jump Up!: A very underrated Record. Almost all the songs are good to great in quality/songwriting. Plus his orig. classic lineup was back.

Too Low for Zero: One of the two Elton records/cd's my parents had in the house when I was a kid [the other was "GYBR"]. I grew up on it. And it's still one of my favourites to this day. Another record of great songwriting. And classic songs/minor hits like "I'm Still Standing", "Cold as Christmas", "Kiss the Bride", "I guess that's why...". And the more obscure other tracks like "Religion", "Whipping Boy", "Crystal", "Too Low for Zero", "Saint, Whipping Boy", "One More Arrow" are great too.

Then his albums jumped the tracks and never came back until "The One" and "Made In England". the latter is one of my fav. ones in his post-70's output including "Jump Up" and "2L4Z". "made in England" the great songwriting returns, the strings return, it's a pretty solid consistant album, great production.

One more thing, my first major concert was seeing Elton on his Medusa Tour of 2000/2001. It was in an old echo-y arena, just him and his piano and us [13,000 fans]. It was long but great. He played obscure stuff like "Better off Dead", "Tonight" and "Carla Etude" along with his hits, of course. I only remember parts of it, but it was worth it. I think the ticket was $100. but it was my major bday present. So it was worth it.

Third_Uncle_Eno, that's a pretty damn solid description of his career. He went through two periods where he put out utter dross, but other than that he's been pretty solid for the better part of 40 years, and absolutely spectacular right through "Captain Fantastic."

sneakattack 2008-02-26 05:22:19 PM
"He said: "As you get older, you change the way you think, the way you dress.""

So I guess age 50 is the limit?

Third_Uncle_Eno Awesome job highlighting the career. Don't forget the singles---Lucy in the Sky, Pinball Wizard, Philadelphia Freedom. The output and quality was incredible during this time.

When I listed to the Top 40 countdown I remember a bit of trivia about Elton John having a top 10 or so single every year for many years. This would have been in the 1980s when his pop star status was declining. He might have missed his first year then.

Today I played Honky Chateau, memorable to me because it was part of my father's record collection when I was at an impressionable age.

He wants to be one of those who can easily hide.

He's one of those musicians whose music I don't personally care for at all - none of it. But I cheerfully concede that one would have to be deaf to deny his talent and musicianship. His music really is great - I just don't like everything that's great. Too bad really - I wish I could appreciate him better.

I live 2 miles from the former Caribou Studios.

Locals still talk about the time that Elton was so tweeked that he let Stevie Wonder drive him around the roads up at Caribou Ranch.

I'm on the same page, or as other farkers may say, 'THIS'.

I'm kind of being forced to see him in concert on Mother's day weekend. I know the music is gonna be good and whatnot, but my mom is so much more excited about the show than I could ever imagine being.
