Yeah, I wasn't either, but it's still a head scratcher of an article.

I would like to see this "Type Civilization" scale in detail. I want to see what a Type V can do.

Well a type IV or above would be like the Q from star trek, so I guess if anybody could do it, they could.

eqtworld: InsertLebowskiReferenceHere: Also known as 13.23 billion light years.

Isn't the universe only about 13.something billion light years old? IIRC the heavier elements were not even made 13.23 billion light years ago

Yep, even says in the article that this would've taken place when the universe was only a few hundred million years old.. This hyper-advanced species must have evolved sufficiently in this infant universe to throw together their own solar system and um.. get this article written about them. Makes perfect sense.

When you have a "civilization that created the big bang in their massive inter-universe particle colliders," time travel is kind of easy.

Talon [TotalFark] 2008-02-25 01:08:45 PM
Um, the article makes some pretty hefty claims; but I don't see any justification or evidence for them.

Am I missing something?

Or is this just conspiracy theory drivel?

You don't really have to say "light years" old. Considering that a light year is the distance light travels in a vaccum in one year, so it's actually a measure of distance. So to just say "It's X amount of years old" is fine.

The universe is somewhere between 14 Billion and 15 Billion years old, so says The Big Bang Theory.

ekdikeo4 2008-02-25 01:32:25 PM
WTF is a "Type IV" civilization? Are we Type III? or what?

It doesn't say the galaxy is inhabited, it says that there is evidence of hte work of the people that caused the big bang..

what a giant pile of WTF

We are not even a Type I. We have yet to master nuclear fusion. Idiot.

Why is nobody reading the linked Wiki article and still asking what the Types mean?

* Type I - A civilization that is able to harness all of the power available on a single planet, approximately 1016 or 1017 W [1]. The actual figure is quite variable; Earth specifically has an available power of 1.74 × 1017 W (174 petawatts). (See Earth's energy budget.) Kardashev's original definition was 4 × 1012 W. (Kardashev had originally defined Type I as a "technological level close to the level presently attained on earth", "presently" meaning 1964[2].)

* Type II - A civilization that is able to harness all of the power available from a single star, approximately 4 × 1026 W. [1] Again, this figure is variable; the Sun outputs approximately 3.86 × 1026 W. Kardashev's original definition was also 4 × 1026 W[2].

* Type III - A civilization that is able to harness all of the power available from a single galaxy, approximately 4 × 1037 W. [1] This figure is extremely variable, since galaxies vary widely in size; the stated figure is the approximate power output of the Milky Way. Kardashev's original definition was also 4 × 1037 W.[2].

So basically, from our perspective, a Type 4 civilization might as well be a bunch of gods.

Knucklepopper 2008-02-25 03:23:28 PM
Meh. It's only a Type IV. probably haven't even evolved into light-form yet.
WTF?

bitteroldman 2008-02-25 03:24:16 PM
I_C_Weener: So, what are the first three types of civilization?

If I recall, a type 1 has achieved the entire energy out-put of one planet. Type 2 has achieved the out-put of a star. Three is either a solar system or a galaxy or something. Its all sci-fi blather.

bitteroldman 2008-02-25 03:25:12 PM
sorry Raiden333

Milliard or thousand million, actually, everywhere except America
