I know a one-armed dude who drives a stick. How he does it, I don't know, but he does.

I-baLL 2008-02-24 08:13:21 PM
I think he holds the wheel with his knees while shifting. As long as he doesn't shift while turning (you really shouldn't do that anyway) he should be okay.

There are retrofit kits that can relocate the shifter to the wheel.
However, I can't see anything like that there, but maybe it was removed before re-sale.

Right hand drive vehicle, and he's missing the left arm. (The shifter is on the left)

I only have one arm and drive a Porshe, so I'm getting a kick...

No seriously...joke time:

Blond reading a 'help wanted' section of her local paper sees an ad asking for someone who can come and paint their porch. Blond calls and the guy gives her his address, she goes to meet him the next day.

The guy presents her with buckets of paint, paint brushes, rollers, etc, everything she would need to paint his wrap-around porch.

Half an hour later she comes to his door and knocks, when he answers she says 'all done, you can pay me now!' and he thinks 'this porch is hundreds of square feet, there's no way she could have painted it all in a half an hour.'

He steps out onto the porch, and finds nothing has changed; he continues to look around, boggled, thinking she must be playing some kind of joke.

Then she holds out her hand for payment and says 'by the way, it's not a Porche, it's a Ferarri.'

My soccer coach in HS had a farked up right arm. He drove a stick and shifted with his left hand. For you blokes in the UK, that's all wrong.

That's what I thought at first, too, but that's gotta be pretty difficult since you need both feet to work the clutch and gas....

Upon further reflection, buyer beware--he probably just left it in first gear all the time.

I have limited use of my left arm and I drive stick. You just switch gears fast.

But I didn't see an extra arm rest in the spec details.

Q: What has five arms and loves pussy?
A: The Indigo Girls and Rick Allen.

If Rick Allen is hanging from a tree, how do you get him down?

uncledeercamp 2008-02-25 08:23:08 PM
Make sure you get a CarFax report on that ride.

I figure Rick Allen can work a stick, but can Heather Mills work a clutch?

When I saw Def Leppard play in the early 80's he still had both arms.

CheddarPants [TotalFark] 2008-02-25 11:26:21 PM
I asked the guy. This is what he told me:

Hi,
This is something we are trying to ascertain via their official web
site. All we can say is Rick purchased/ordered the vehicle. We have
pictures of him and a lady sat in the car. No permanent mods inside the
car, but maybe he used something? How does he manage to still drum at a
good level with one arm? Adaptive foot pedals. The web author of the
official site is hoping to get Rick himself to post a message to this board
and apparently he is interested in the sale, so who knows, he may have it
back :-)

Meh.

It's not like it's Jon Voight's Le Baron.
BTW I once broke 2 metacarpals in my left hand and had to drive a stick, it can be done.

You can easily smoke a cigarette while drinking a beer while driving a stick-shift while talking on a cell-phone.
But it takes practice.

/and you might have to also adjust your radio volume while opening a couple of windows.

I-baLL: shift while turning (you really shouldn't do that anyway)

Why the hell not? Geez.

barryq 2008-02-26 02:49:34 AM
I thought maybe the car a 1988 was bought before the accident. But nope.

On December 31 1984, drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car crash on the A57 in the hills outside Sheffield when his speeding Corvette left the road on a sharp bend and went through a drystone wall.

You want to decelerate/downshift just before the turn + you upshift/accelerate as you begin the bend. It's for performance reasons, not just arbitrary

/correct me if I'm wrong

If you're going fast and you're turning at a constant speed if you hit the clutch the engine won't be providing power to the wheels for however long it takes you to shift thus increasing the chances of your car losing grip.

I believe it's called drop throttle oversteer...

malcolm33 2008-02-26 02:43:09 PM
In racing, you downshift before you turn in. If you have to upshift before you exit the corner, you were in the wrong gear.

If you are close to the traction limit, you shouldn't shift. If you are going slow and well within the limits, shifting won't matter unless you floor the throttle and dump the clutch.

In cars like the 911, if you are near the limit and lift the throttle mid-corner, you will get off-throttle oversteer due to the weight transferring to the front of the car. Same deal if you apply the brakes mid-corner when you are near the limit.

If you have to accelerate when you enter the corner, you entered too slow. :P

jicon 2008-02-26 10:14:51 PM
The guy lost his left arm, meaning to shift, he'd really have to haul his arm across his body as this is a right hand drive.

Either BS, or Allen bought the car for a girlfriend or something. 1988? He was likely making big, big money back then.

(I heard on Stern once, that his bandmates call him "Tripod")... who knows how he drove it.

You're wrong. How the hell am I supposed to turn around corners?
OOoooh! You're one of those people that freaking CARRIES their car around corners, much to my frustration.

Example: Light turns green, I make a left turn, and by the time the steering wheel is straight again, I'm in third :)

Thanks D23

Im a 90s person so I learned all I needed to from Bloodhound Gang.

I use two arms driving automatic on some turns, I dont see how someone could do manual with one arm. Although I suppose he might have only baught it for the looks.
