What if you don't drive? They are allowed to get lost?

This is retarded. A drivers license is exactly that a license to drive. If they wanted to pass out "hikers licenses" then they should make a law doing exactly that.

Because People in power are Stupid: "hikers licenses"
They are afraid they will sound rude when they say "You, sir, can go take a hike" when handing out the licenses.

Could this be characterized as a Chewbacca law? What if you don't have a drivers license? What if you aren't a resident of the state?

actually a driver's license is a general purpose government leverage device, it is also good for driving.

Well, really, I just tend to have an absurd (and to me, somewhat annoying) ability to remember vast ammounts of totally useless information.

I cut my teeth on that movie though. My first Monty Python. I should be able to remember every Llama from the credits! Curse my terrible memory which allows me the ability to quote only wide swatches of movies instead of the entire thing.

Short definition of the average Farker, if you ask me (which you didn't, but I don't care).

Yeah, let's take away a persons ability to get to a job to make money to pay a fine they can't afford. Fantastic.

Or you could let the State keep picking up the tab for every dipshiat who goes out into the woods without a map or compass or GPS.

Where's your "personal responsibility" outrage?

My plan is to continue hiking in New Hampshire and not getting lost, and then not getting speeding tickets or DUIs by not speeding or driving drunk. How will the government take my license now, huh?

Vegan T-Rex 2008-02-25 02:17:59 AM
A true Granite Stater would read this article and be outraged that the state was threatening to take away licenses for non-driving offenses... then would be ready to raise arms against the state when they learned that the state spent their tax money to save morons.

My plan is to continue ignoring New Hampshire and maybe it'll go away.

Actually, I think the smartest thing to do if lost in New Hampshire is to keep hiking west until you're in Vermont.
/Truly ashamed I had to look that up on a map.
//But then, I was smart enough to use a map, so this fine won't apply to me.

Actually, since the entire NH/VT border is a fairly wide and typically very, very cold river, that's a terrible plan.

/Thanks for playing

dchapesnh 2008-02-25 07:51:08 AM
fools hike into the woods in winter unprepared. it costs a lot of money and puts a lot of other people in danger when someone thinks they don't have to treat the mountains in NH like actual mountains(they're not only hills, what is 6000 feet? nothing)then they need a blackhawk to haul them out of the snow.
they should pay for the rescue, all of it and be fined additionally to try and perhaps, discourage people who don't know what they are doing from venturing into the wild and ending up meeting the fate of alex supertramp.
passing a law to take someones ability to drive is stupid, especially in NH where there is no public transportation. and given that this happens to people from outside of nh it makes even less sense.

and just because you need to be rescued that doesn't mean you were being negligent. sometimes shiat just happens.

dude if you need a map to find ANY state in the country you live in, you really need to kill yourself, or move to the south.

Nitpick: there's a teensy-tiny section of the far northern border of Vermont and New Hampshire that actually is land. Do a map-search for Beecher Falls, Vermont and you'll see it, perhaps with a bit of zooming.

The Quebec-New Hampshire border crossing is fun. Pre-9/11 my wife and I were coming in from Quebec and actually had to honk to get the guard to wake up. At 10 in the morning. I don't know if it's still that sleepy. (And there's one of those dopey gravity-hill things about a mile over the Quebec side.)

I'm all for people who need to be rescued having to pay for the rescue. However, this driver's license scheme is not very well thought out.

The family of the first person who dies out in the wild after it passes will have a lawyer sue the state, claiming that the person would have asked for help but didn't want to lose his or her license.
