He is merely doing it because interpreters get an armed guard.

Hero? That's all kinds of stupid. You got shot at and have your life threatened in many ways, and you want to go back? And both times, you're being paid for helping an invading army occupy your own country. There's a word for the kind of person who does that, and it sounds a bit like "waiter".

He's a hero just because he's about to be trained to kill innocent Iraqis?

Standards are slipping.

I would do that the other way around, if I was drafted.

That was probably a troll, but it's "this"-worthy.

I don't think it's his country once he joins a foreign army and seeks other citizenship.

If after all that he wants to enlist on our side, it must mean a hell of a lot to him.

Dialectic 2008-02-24 06:32:28 PM
The men, many of whom studied at the college level and owned homes and cars in Iraq, have had a hard time finding work. There's no market here for Arab interpreters, so they're learning to write résumés, network, and apply for other jobs.

Are they sure, I mean, where do all the gay translators get their jerrbs?

Pretty much. It's the first level hero. Now when you save your entire company firing a machine gun from a burning tank, you reach a higher level and they pin medals on you.

Sounds about right.

From the article: "But with his savings nearly depleted and unable to land a decent job, Wadi enlisted in the Army."

It's great that he's willing to join the Army and help us in Iraq, but this line bothered me.

I was thinking that. It's all in the perspective though. Countries really are nothing but divisive bullshiat. I'd vouchsafe he just doesn't care where his parents farked, and probably likes a bacon sandwich every now and then.

Why are leftists #1. So stupid #2. So dishonest and #3. Such haters?

I wish the USA had a path to citizenship that required more than just being born here.

I recommend: two years of service of some kind. Military or peace-industries. But you have to actually "do something" to be a first-class citizen here.

/putting an "I support our troops" decal on your Cadillac is not enough.

Thankyou for that well reasoned argument, backed up with the finest logic and research.

The fact that you resorted to no assertions other than rabid name-calling indicates to the rest of us that you don't actually have a logical argument. Could some more intellectually sound right-wing types come here and debate with us please? Please?

Let's look at this more reasonably, and with a little perspective.

Suppose Iran invades the USA, deposing our government and murdering civilians. Luckily for us, this is rather unlikely, but let's just imagine. Then you find out that your neighbour Mr.Durkadurka who you always thought of as a kind of ok guy is translating for the Iranian army, to help facilitate the occupation. He goes away for a few months, and the next time you see him, he's wearing an Iranian army uniform and more directly supporting the occupation.

Be honest - are you going to think he's a Hero? I think the first words that would actually crop up in your mind are "traitor" and "collaborator". Try and see things from a perspective other than "USA! USA! USA!", it's quite enlightening.

Or maybe you'd try to kill him? Would you then think of yourself as a "terrorist", or something trying to do justice and fight for freedom?

itazurakko [TotalFark] 2008-02-24 06:45:15 PM
Anyone else sadly amazed that there are no jobs for Arabic interpreters (or more likely, translators) in the US?

You'd think keeping up with intel (including just reading mainstream publications and constantly surfing the Arabic-language internet) would be a higher priority.

As for going back, if he thought being an interpreter was dangerous, I can't see how he thinks this is any safer. I suppose the idea is that he'll be further "embedded" now so more firepower surrounding him, or something.

But if the Army has two brain cells to rub together, I'd expect them to put this guy right back into translating/interpreting, only now with a uniform on. It would be a waste to just have him as a regular fighter.

You must have picked that name because you couldn't choose between asshole or jackass.

BTW...don't even start with me with your " reasoned debate " bullshiat. Your Boobies discounts anything argument you might try to make in that regard.

Again I ask, why are people like you so stupid and dishonest?

BTW. Who's out there in Iraq killing innocent civilians? Here's a hint....it's NOT our military, but then you'd have to actually know your ass from a hole in the ground to know that.

HMS_Blinkin 2008-02-24 06:45:59 PM
FTFA: "After the Army," he said, "I hope to go to an American university, get a job, and be a productive citizen."

He's already doing more than half of American citizens right there.
