One thing I'll never get about consumer products is when you find something that works, like past laptop batteries, why fark with it? You constantly hear about car companies recalling cars for stupid shiat like ignition keys bursting into flames. Didn't they get that stuff sorted out in, like, the 1960's? If not then, then maybe that "high technology" was sorted out in the 80's?

I'm assuming the answer is that they are cutting 1% of the cost out of the product by having Chinese manufacturer #2 do it instead of Chinese manufacturer #1, who was $.02 higher, but his shiat worked.

Let us engineers design stuff, the farking accountants can just push the beans around like they used to.

The fact that they had the lap top was sitting on a pillow, which likely blocked most of its air vents, surely had nothing to do with the overheating laptop.

computers are designed to shut off when they overheat, not explode. while using a laptop on a pillow is obviously retarded, it still shouldn't have caught on fire.

Ummm.... on the 10 odd laptops I've owned in the last 12 years, they have all had warning statements in the manual about using them on a hard surface, and not on carpet, fabric, etc... And as hot as they get on the bottom, I certainly wouldn't put one on my lap.

AST (R.I.P.) had some exploding batteries back in the 90's. Seems the vendor got the leads reversed on the hot-swap batteries and they would go bang at the most inopportune times -- like on a pregnant lady's lap on an airplane. Blew keys off the keyboard.

Why the parts or repair center never noticed the fark-up, I do not know.

Not sure if you're trolling; assuming you're not...

Did you stop to consider that the battery that gave 3 hours of operation for a laptop with a pentium 1 might have slightly lower performance in a modern laptop? Or is it just too easy to blame profit-seeking and/or capitalism?

This may be a silly question, but why isn't their a market for laptops that don't require fans like those XO laptops? I know Vista won't run without a pent-core, 5.2 Gig CPU*, but why aren't the Linux geeks on top of that?
Or at least quit putting the vents on the bottom.

*Sarcasm. I'm not cracking on Vista. I actually don't mind it and do enjoy Linux on a regular basis as well.

Some companies don't call them laptops anymore. Go to HP, Gateway, Asus and they call them notebooks or portables. I like the term "foldable computer."

Gunny Walker: This may be a silly question, but why isn't their a market for laptops that don't require fans like those XO laptops?

There are a number of parts in the PC that give off heat, including the battery. Also, people want performance. Until we get chips that create no resistance, we will always have energy (heat) leaking out the core.

Or at least quit putting the vents on the bottom.

As in this case, a pillow can easily cover up a side vent. Even so, the market demands the smallest laptop possible. Manifolds to move the air out the side takes up space.

Still, the laptops overheat mode should be warning beeps and shutting down, not catching fire.

My iBook has the vent in between the screen hinge so it's pretty much impossible to block. It vents up in front of the screen and the hinge is open so it will still vent if you close the top. A good design even though I don't think Apple quality is all that great. The fan hardly ever turns on though.

Please read my post again. I didn't say anything about why the laptop started on fire (or whether it should have been prevented).

The accountants have their place. If they let me design the shiat I wanted to, everything would be made of titanium and the safe-guards would include a ten step procedure to turning it on. If I designed a car the way I wanted to, it would be able to run over an Abraham's tank and require 10 mortgages to pay for it.

Pillows, however, have no shut off mechanism. Melting batteries don't either.

------------------------------------
Apple's been doing that for years. My MacBook is the same way. Intel Core Duo, and its fan also doesn't run very often. At least not at full blast.

And as for Apple's quality... well, if you don't think it's that great... try a Toshiba or Dell laptop. THEN you'll see why Apple's quality is good, relative to others. The biggest difference, I find, is that Apple usually fixes their goofups.

Other stuff that Apple does that other laptop makers should do: The magnetic attachment feature for the power adapter. People are always tripping over laptop power cords. Do it on most laptops, and the machine is likely to fall off the table, or the charging port can be ripped off the motherboard. Trip over the cord on my Macbook, and it simply detaches. And, at least on the MacBook (which is the lowest- cost apple notebook, and intended for people like students who abuse stuff) there's no levers or latches to snag on backpacks and clothing. My ex- gf's Dell laptop had to be sent for repair twice due to some latch or lever getting broken off.

As for the overheating battery, Lithium- ion batteries, if not designed or made right, easily catch fire.

Here here. Everything in moderation, even accounting and engineering. In fact, I'll even throw up the old Porter model as a reminder. Any one part gets too uppity, and the whole shebang loses money.

The XO has a 700Mhz cpu with 256 RAM. Sure it won't knock your socks off, But if you put that in a normal sized case to get a 15" screen, you can afford a pretty large heat sink. It's powerful enough to run a Linux. I can use RDesktop and the Windows desktop machine behind the couch for a lot of other stuff.
As for the performance thing, you have a point. Most folks are looking for a desktop replacement. A low power PC is certainly a niche market, but so is a Mac, Pico Itx (pops), or even an Asus Eeepc (new window).
The low power pc isn't sexy. It'll never be a power seller, but it could be a small market.
/If anyone knows of fanless laptop, I'd love to hear about it.
