One question, though... Has anyone seen recent pics or video of Fidel lately? I know the joke is that he's dead, but I mean.. how long has this been going on?

Cuba's National Assembly chose Raul Castro, Fidel Castro's younger brother, as Cuba's new president on Sunday.

I'll bet Hillary wishes it was that easy....

So What?

This is worse than letting American Corporations rule the country?

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-02-24 04:40:48 PM
Castro entered the hospital in 2006 for intestinal surgery and transferred some powers to his 76-year-old brother Raul, the country's longtime defense minister.

wow - they apparently had to physically rip the ruleship of Cuba out of Castro's guts and give a part of it to Raul.

communism is some hard core shiat yo.

Can you say "Banana Republic"

Cuba has not been one since Castro took power.

Deal with it America.

Our foreign policy sucks so bad that a tin pot dictator like Castro was preferable.

Noam Chomsky has to endorse him first. Should take about a month.

I'm waiting on the announcement...it wouldn't surpise me in the least bit to hear that Fidel has died within the next few weeks.
I'd be more surprised if he isn't.....

Fengen 2008-02-24 04:46:58 PM
If a darkhorse candidate like Raul Castro can become President of Cuba, Ron Paul can become President of America. This bodes well, methinks. Inspirational, really.

Actually, Castro was the very definition of 'banana republic dictator'. Not the clothing store, which is something else entirely.

RobbieFal 2008-02-24 04:48:47 PM
So we can keep talking about Castro without changing any of the talking points?

Are you kidding me? Hillary is looking at this thing and going 'wait - I can just have opposition candidates KILLED!? I want communism!'

RobsterCraw [TotalFark] 2008-02-24 04:48:59 PM
Raul takes the helm, just in case anyone was still under the delusion that Castro's Cuba was or is anything more ideal than a patrimonial autocracy. Communism ain't just dead, it was never manifested in the first place.

..and yet every time it's been tried, this has been the end result.

Serious Question:

Why is Fidel's regime so much more abhorant than that of the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia?

Raul would have stepped up earlier, but Fidel kept dragging out the custody battle for Elian Gonzalez.

Communism has replaced the king with the rule of the people! Long live the king!

/Don't like communists
//don't like people who think that other forms of authoritarian despotism are okay because they aren't communist

TeddyRooseveltsMustache: We can haz 21st century carz now?

Jeremy Clarkson had an interesting article a few years back about how Cubans all have these 1950 US cars but they all run on Lada engines. One guy had an Aston martin that was devoid of paint or well half the body and the poor guy still thinks he will make a fortune off it when the embargo is lifted.

Only Che's car remains unaltered. Too bad its disintegrating.

Yes, but he's slightly healthier, and Hugo Chavez's tongue isn't so firmly inserted into his anus.
