I don't want my tax dollars paying your salary anymore. The Osama bullsh*t coming from somebody that supposedly is bringing democracy and freedom to the middle east is especially dismaying. How about a la carte defense spending? That way, we can make sure we are only paying for intelligent qualified people to fight instead of grossly uninformed police academy rejects with chips on their shoulders.

As it turns out, Barack Obama had his story mostly right. His larger narrative of a dangerous overburdened American military is unquestionably correct. But while conservatives will question his experience to be Commander-in-Chief, history shows it was George W. Bush who was not ready for duty.

It is my opinion that 'patriotism' as it is used by those who would question another's patriotism, is akin to nationalism and jingoism, and not something to be aspired to.

I'm a patriot, I just think we have a bad government. The country is the people, not the organizations created to manage that country.

But it doesn't look like we'll be getting much serious discussion done in this thread so....

Bush got DUIs and had a coke habit and ruined every business venture he had his hand in. So there.

Of course. Voodoo trickle-down economics, as stated by corporate stooge economist Milton Friedman.

www.heritage.org

It's the philosophy that has swept America, where giving money to the already-rich and powerful is actually justified as being a good thing, while helping the poor and sick that are in need is seen as a bad thing. It's the reverse-Robin Hood economic philosophy in action.

Even the Sheriff of Nottingham and King John would have been proud of finding a way to justify this and actually convince a majority of the unwashed masses that taking from the poor to help the rich is in their best interests.

You see, if we give money to the already rich, the rich will go buy another yacht, which will mean that builders of yachts will have more jobs, which will mean that they will have more money to spend on Burger King, thus helping the poor!

And about 50% of the country actually still believes it!

TexasIsBetter: Why do I have a feeling your grasp on military concepts and spending is weaker than the French Army? (Sorry, you probably have a high regard for the French)

Most people who support waterboarding or invoke the "ticking time bomb" scenario have a high regard for the French. After all, it was the French who invented that argument during their occupation of Algeria to justify torturing Muslims there. The previous justifications for torture (it's okay to do it because they're not human; torture is punishment for sins; we should do it to retaliate for their previous terrorism) didn't appeal to French liberals, but the ticking time bomb scenario seemed to fit the bill.

So there you go. Every time a conservative channels "24" to defend torture, or says that they don't like it but it's necessary to protect us, they are channeling French liberals from the '60s.

Obama was getting high, trying coke, and getting drunk in high school. What's your point?

Ishidan [TotalFark] 2008-02-24 07:34:11 PM
Oh for f*cks sake

In 2000, we had eight years of Bill Clinton--and more importantly, eight years of not picking fights.

The Soviet bear was dead. Operation Desert Storm long over. There was no NEED to pour money into the military at the time.

Kinda reminds me of how the US Military looked in November, 1941.

That changed in September of 2001, just like it did in December of 1941. The fact that Dubya mentioned this very event but forgetting the context is telling: seems to me that Dubya was itching for his own little 'save the world via war' scenario even then, and boy did he get it. Now, we've had almost eight years of jumping into fights in the Middle East--a place that was known for endless war for decades if not centuries.

You think maybe our military needs might have changed?

Problem: this has been an absolute display of military incompetency at the command level. We went from a similar defense-only posture to smacking the shiat out of both the Japanese and German military machines in half the time--but at great cost in terms of civilian sacrifice, lives, and personal freedoms. Without the ability to muster that, you get a confused clusterfark like, oh, Vietnam.

Some of you may remember that the military DID reply "NOT ready for duty, sir." The administration's response at the time, "Go anyway, you go with what you have not what you wished you had or may have at a later time"--a truism of war, but the fact remains.

Of course, the problem is that Obama is POINTING OUT that the Republican-led party in power has farked up royally. Nobody likes being told that, so they attack him for daring to say it.

But now. This article means to tell me that as early as 2000, Dubya was lying his head off about war.

I dare any user of the phrase "Bush Derangement Syndrome" to come up and defend the statement that Bush Derangement is to hate him without cause rather than to love him without cause: Bush Derangement is clearly the act of believing a single thing Dubya says.

Personally, if it is done, I would rather not know about it, and if it isn't done, I would rather not know about it. I personally took information from a little kid who told us specifically where to look for HME and all sorts of other goodies that make things go "boom" under my humvee. We found it right were he said it was and also apprehended an individual who had been captured and released before. I don't pretend to know why, all I know is when we ran him through the BATS system he came up as having already been incarcerated. But... who knows, maybe if we had better interrogation techniques we would have found out more about this individual and maybe vic 1 in our convoy a few months ago would not be a piece of scrap metal in a junkyard.

bartink: Nope, I wouldn't. I welcome a reduction in the military. We cannot afford it. And having it around makes it imperative to use the damn thing. It becomes a beast with an endless appetite.

Ya your a regular smart one. Lets cut off our fists in the middle of a fight? You've probably never been in any sort of a fight though, but for those of of who don't shy away from confrontation like a little liberal biotch... we don't like to lose.

I'm not. I was of military age for the brief period of time when plundering the middle east for oil wasn't done as blunderingly and cantakerously as it is now. but yes, my father was. My uncle was. My grandfather was. And many friends and co-workers are, 5 of which are in one of those units that spend an inordinate amount of time wearing night vision and sneaking around rooftops. The point was (I didn't count on people like you getting it anyway, so I apologize for using too complicated of an explanation for you) that we shouldn't have to rely on little kids. Our intelligence community should be doing this.

There just isn't a way for you to convince anyone you're a soldier. If you had the confidence that a soldier needs, you wouldn't feel the need to protest so much.

You wouldn't get it if I told you that calling me a soldier is kind of an insult would you? TexasIsBetter: I would properly call you a liar. No one in Iraq is as detached from reality as you clearly are.

I didn't say I was. I offered a hypothetical situation based on the fact that every soldier I know views punk-ass strip-mall jockeys like you with contempt. Especially if you wind up in their unit. Those of them that have seen any combat just shrug and keep their distance. They accept the fact that you are a tragedy in boots, they just don't want you making them part of it.

How long did it take you to form that sentence? And the fact that you called me a soldier PROVES that your ARE INDEED A LIAR. If you were a person of uniform you would be able to tell the difference in OURS. I shouldn't continue to even to type this because you have already proven yourself a LIAR.

The fact that you are impressed with grammar school-level wordplay isn't doing your argument much of a service.
