FTA: "Though badly depleted from chemotherapy, Dennis refused because he was a devout Jehovah's Witness."

Looks more like suicide than murder.

This is a lot more common then you hear about. My wife was raised as a JW and her whole mom's side are still very into it. I know 2 people who in the last 5 years have denied procedures that would have saved their lives because of their fear of blood. I also know of a 5 month old baby who died for the same reason. They have killed more people then Jim Jones, but they are very good at keeping it under wraps and out of the media. Its a huge cult that scams its members out of everything including sometimes their health.

It would be nice, if we as a species could one day move past the need to join cults.

Not gonna happen, I know.

Apologies in advance for the long post, but everytime I hear a story like this I can only think of the following:

An orthodox rabbi is studying in his living room, when there is a knock on the door. When he opens the door, it is a policeman, who informs him that the rivers are rising, a flood is expected, and evacuation is recommended.
The rabbi explains, "I am a man of God. I am sure he will protect me from danger."
The policeman shrugs his shoulders and leaves.
As the rabbi is watching the rising water getting closer and closer to his house, there is a second knock, this time a State Trooper. The trooper says, "Rabbi, we are evacuating the area as the flood is getting serious and you are in jeopardy."
Again the rabbi explains, "I am a man of God. I am sure he will protect me from danger. I am staying."
Well, the water continues to rise, until the rabbi is forced to stay on the second floor. He hears some yelling and looks up to see two firemen in a rowboat right outside his second floor window.
"Rabbi!" one of the firemen calls, "Get in the boat, the rains are not letting up! It's getting serious."
"I am a man of God. He will protect me from danger. I'll stay."
The firemen, fearing for their own safety, row on.
As the flood rises, the rabbi is forced to climb out onto his roof, just as a helicopter is flying over. The helicopter drops a rope ladder and a voice calls down, "We're coming to get you, rabbi!"
"No, no.... God will protect me. You go on."
Well, needless to say, the water continues to rise and the rabbi drowns. When he gets to Heaven, he is really upset. "I must see God," says the rabbi. "Please take me to God."
He is granted an audience with God.
"Lord," says the rabbi, "after a lifetime of devotion to you, why would you forsake me in my moment of need?"
God says, "Schmuck! I sent two cops, a rowboat full of firemen, and a helicopter...."

A few years back a longtime JW member was excommunicated and shunned by his fellow J-DUBS for allowing his 16 year old daughter, who was suffering from cancer, to get a blood transfusion.

How Christian is that?

Are minors allowed to refuse treatment for other reasons?

"I don't want chemo because my hair will fall out!"

"Well, OK Timmy. You're right, death is better."

He was 40, it was his choice. However, there should be a stipulation in the law to allow doctors to violate JW beliefs in order to save the lives of under-18 youths. They should not be sacrificed for the sake of their parents' piety.

It's a farked up religion, to say the least. I did some research on them in junior college and even travelled to their international headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. What started as a legit organization over 120 years ago dedicated to studying the Bible quickly turned into an cult-like organization which did not allow deveation from the "company" line and has wrecked a lot of lives of people searching for simple answers in a complicated world.

A good read on them is "The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses" by Heather and Gary Botting, two university professors who were in the faith.

Also interesting is the fact that this "religious" organization gets a lot of tax breaks and is crippling the tax rolls in small towns in upstate New York where they own huge farms to feed their many followers who work in Brooklyn for free. It's like the Catholic Church but with a shorter history.

/ Not religious.

Extremely unchristian, considering they're not Christian.

takenforgranite: meaning what jerry2a?

Meaning these people refuse medical treatment because they would rather leave it in god's hands...I mean, if you believe the whole god thing then you have to assume that blood transfusions must exist as part of the divine plan, right? Isn't it just as plausible to credit god with giving humans the ability to perform all of these wonderful medical procedures to save lives? If god had intended us to live like cavemen, we'd still be living like cavemen, right?

Another group of stupid people who will forfeit the advancement of technology for the sake of salvation in the afterlife.

I say let them be and let them spread their gospel to all the creationist. If you don't accept the advancement of science, then you don't deserve the fruits of its labor, and you can farking die in a way that displays your great stupidity.

I recall a controversy in the senate decades ago in which laws were passed permitting intervention in cases where the children of Christian Scientist adherents were in severe medical danger. I'll try to dig up the article later today. It took hours of showing graphic images (of the children of CS adherents covered in bleeding sores, with grossly inflated tumors and goiters on their faces/necks while their parents did nothing to help them) before the heavily Christian senate would stop giving the Christian Scientists the benefit of the doubt.

Religious antagonism towards life-improving science is a special sort of perversity that nothing else quite compares to.
