Title will be "Stop the War or we'll make a new album every six months until you do".

It's expected to be the most successful media protest in recorded history.

It's synergy, folks. They'll combine their two minutes of hate into a full 60.

They release a new album every other year - never stopped.

Yeah, because we all know being opposed to war in general, and the cruelties inflicted upon millions of innocents is an absurdly asshat thing to do. I do not see being opposed to war as anything even closely related to hate. Not in a billion years.

The man who triggered the biggest western-driven genocide of this century has definitely drawn the ire of many talented Americans. The people who hate these songs the most will be the polar opposites, I think, of these musical artists.

Well, it's not like they'd collaborate on an "Up With People" number now, would they?

"Body of War" focuses on Tomas Young, an Army soldier paralyzed upon arriving in Iraq.

Gotta love those vague descriptions about points that are key to the story. Was he wounded in combat or did he fall out of the C-17?

I can't believe Chuck D, the man who wrote "Burn Hollywood Burn", could still be on speaking terms with that minstrel show character Flav.

Last summer at Rock The Bells, he got booed when he told the crowd he would have a new season of his show soon.

Pontius Gandalf 2008-02-24 03:12:07 PM
If a bunch of non-warriors can start a war, a bunch of non-warriors can try to end it. I personally can't believe sentient beings are still playing this stupid, stupid game. You may say I'm a dreamer, but..well, you know the rest.

/I enjoy military history, I'd just rather it stayed there.

It's the zenith of arrogance to think that singing protest songs means ANYTHING; if you're letting uneducated musicians influence your political beliefs you need to re-think your positions.

These people are hacks, drunk on their own sense of self-importance.

And 'Imagine' is one of the vilest songs every written; a child with no knowledge of the world, wondering 'why can't we just get along?'

What about people who agree with them politically but think nearly all protest songs are awful and lose whatever meaning they may have had 5 minutes after the event they were written about is over?

Protest songs accomplish exactly jack shiat, except maybe to give people something to sing at protest rallies.

limboslam 2008-02-24 03:48:32 PM
Well thank God these guys are doing this soundtrack! I was starting to think war was a good thing. I'm glad a bunch of singers can educate me. I just wish they were around in the 40's. Maybe we could have avoided that whole "wiping out the Nazis" waste of time?

Tomas Young came out on stage with Pearl Jam and Ben Harper a Lollapalooza this past year.

Yeah, most protest music is bad -- it's hard to do political art of any sort. But sometimes musicians do make good political music - take the old folkies, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie -- or Springsteen's "The River," Stephen Stills "For What It's Worth" - good, smart protest songs.

At any rate, I don't think the point is to change political beliefs but inspire folks already engaged in political action.

I mean, I don't need Marvin Gaye to tell me I want to get it on, but it does set a mood.

/and what's the problem understanding the point to "Imagine?" Is it the three syllables?

What is it about rock musicians that makes them think they know more about the world than the rest of us? Could it be the fact that their career path involves travelling around the world? I mean, if you want to pontificate about the qualifications of Bono, go to farkin Africa first.

/And if you want to try the same thing with Henry Rollins, BE MY GUEST.

I was one of the original subbys.

my brother was in iraq 5 times. he and his buddies find this type of thing extremely offensive.

he says its like when all the white people pretended to be offended at Imus' comment.

they're pretending to care, but really, they don't nor do they know a damn thing.

therumblefish 2008-02-24 09:47:15 PM
Atleast they're writing songs about something that's relevant and has a point. Would you rather they do a documentary on how awesome spinning rims are or write songs about doing lines of coke and shooting each other?

Pontius Gandalf 2008-02-24 09:50:02 PM
Hey, has anyone asked any soldiers who were actually wounded in this war how THEY feel about some "dumbass" rock musicians writing songs about them? I have a feeling quite a few of them would be pretty farkin thrilled to know that Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder care enough about their pain to record songs about their experiences, no matter how pointless they may seem to us. And I for one feel pretty confident that the people responsible for this record talked to a few soldiers while writing it. I mean, you can give them credit for that much, can't you?

One thing's for sure, it can't hurt em worse than Walter Reed could. Or bargain-basement armament. Or cuts in veteran's benefits. Or foreclosure on their homes. Or stop-losses. I can go on, if you like.

You my friend are a farking idiot, since the beginnings of rock -music(southern blues) it has always been anti-establishment/government...protest songs are the very foundation of popular music and culture. Even if I was not a fan of these bands I would still argue with you to the death. George Washington is not impressed.

This soundtrack also has the Bouncing Souls song "Letter From Iraq." The lyrics were written by a fan/US soldier serving in Iraq who mailed the song to them. They liked it enough to write music and put it on their last album. I believe the soldier has performed it on stage with them a few times since he's been back in the country. Good stuff, great band.
