Riiiiiigggghhht.

As a side note, it's sure a good thing there aren't about 150,000 American troops or so in Afghanistan to stabilize it and actually militarily defeat the Taliban.

It's also a good thing that there's no overwhelming American military force in Afghanistan that could conceivably launch actions into Pakistan's tribal areas if the need arose.

Oh well. At least we got the people who were really responsible for 9-11.

/Yeah, I know you've heard it before
//I'm still mad, though

Because a full-scale invasion and occupation worked so well for the Soviets.

Yeah, I know it wouldn't be exactly the same. But still.

"Taliban are ready for negotiations with the political parties as long as they do not re-impose war on them. If they do so, then Taliban will continue their activities against them," Omar told journalists in Peshawar by telephone.

If you make the Taliban illegal, only criminals will be in the Taliban!

Um, yeah, they're not exactly the same. Or even remotely the same, for that matter.

How about we stay out of their affairs just to see if they can come to the right conclusions without us?

Oh is the USA going to start unilateral attacks against persons in Pakistan's territory? I'm sure that will help mitigate the hate and fury our failures in Afghanistan and Iraq have produced...

Great. Now it's gonna be Saudis, Iraqis and Pakistanis trying to blow up our country. What a brilliant idea this military action has been...

If there's one thing we've learned from Islamic extremists over the years, it's that they always honor their promises of peace.

Helix400

Any examples? I'm not saying that these are especially trustworthy people, but I can't think of a time they've broken their promise on peace.

/Or a time they've promised peace
//Arafat and Fatah don't count, they're left-nationalists.

Now where would be the fun in that?

BTW it was the Taliban that first put a stop to the poppy-growing trade in Afghanistan.

Once the Taliban was out, poppy cultivation shot up.

They're a bunch of Islamofascists: you think they're OK with heroin/opium production/use?

Monolithic power? Check.
Disregard for cultural, tribal, ethnic, and religious differences? Check.
Preference for destroying rather than building? Check.
Ideological inflexibility? Check.

Sounds pretty damn similar to me. I guess the major difference between Soviet Afghanistan and modern Afghanistan is the modern insurgents don't have American training.

Afghanistan is already producing 90% of the worlds Opium. It doesn't sound like they ever stopped.

Yeah right. And if they stop making porn, I'll just simply fall asleep at night and take shorter showers.

Like the Taliban have ever kept their word. They have zero qualms about lying to infidels.

But they did. And we took them down.

/I'm still quite uncomfortable about this fact.
