Is so patriotic that, with the country facing economic peril, that they devolve to the classic Nixonian smear tactics. Shouldn't they be using their minds to synthesize new opportunity? What were they conserving, again?

signaljammer 2008-02-24 08:41:29 AM
Oh, and, by running for president, he is risking his life. Four presidents have been killed in office, others wounded. When one does the math, it turns out to be a very risky profession, indeed. Alternately, he could hang out with his beautiful wife in his gorgeous neighborhood in his nice house, playing with his clever kids. Whats a guy gotta do to get some respect, anyway?

FTA: Sen. Barack Obama's refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin along with a photo of him not putting his hand over his heart during the National Anthem led conservatives on Internet and in the media to question his patriotism.

WTF? The reason he did't wear specifically a "flag pin" was because the iconography has been totally hijacked by numbnuts like this. God, I just can't imagine a day in the lives of people who believe this kind of tripe.

flaEsq [TotalFark] 2008-02-24 08:55:17 AM
More often than not the lapel pin wearers are the ones who hiding behind old glory have spent the last 6 years peddling fear and cowardice and with Lee Greenwood turned up to 10 so you don't notice them emptying the nation's coffers into their pockets. Look behind the lapel pin and you're likely to find a common crook.

Patriotism for these squish-heads isn't about supporting the ideals of the nation. It's all about supporting the local team and the team colors. It wouldn't matter to them what kind of government they had or how evil the leaders were, as long as they lead the rah-rah, ain't we swell? chorus.

These people are the salt of the earth.
You know. Morons.

No amount of spin will change the fact that Michelle Obama should have kept her mouth shut and that point will get repeated until it is drilled into the brain of independents and left-leaning republicans and scares a lot of them away.

I've seen that same 'proud of America' comment from other people, and it was almost always African-Americans saying they were proud that the country can for once support a black candidate. It kind of makes sense in that context, but at the same time Obama was smart enough not to explain it as a race issue, and instead just take the lumps.

And for that matter, Bill should have kept his mouth shut, too.

Please, read the Nader thread and tell me that it's not easy to say that when people say that "people have that little faith in Obama" or that there mere fact he'll be in office means that "There will not be any terrorist attacks on America" and bad photoshops of him as Neo from the Matrix with the caption "He is the one!"

I would vote for a candidate who said, "I have to admit, when other people are reading the Bible in church, I'm studying the Constitution at home."

It would be worth it to see the cranial explosions of some on the religious right.

One day, he'll show up wearing 15 pieces of flair, but by then 17 will be required to show true patriotism.

He'll never win the Patriotic Flair race.

My point still stands that Nader isn't going to draw enough people from Obama to make a difference.

Ah, but if it were that simple, the members of the Supreme Court would have a lot more time on their hands.

C'mon now. If Obama really was a Muslim like the Republicans are trying to insinuate, then we all know he would have no chance of winning squat. Everyone knows that oppressed Christians are the majority of this country.

Obama is running for President of the country he has, not the country we wish we had.

"I go to baseball games and football games and there's just a minority of us who put our hands over our heart. It's not an indication of patriotism..."

This is pretty much what I was I was thinking. I went to a NASCAR event last year and looked around during the Anthem and noticed that me a my friend were the only people I could see with our hands on our hearts. It makes me wonder how many of those other people there, with their hands at their sides are the same people who fall for smear tactics like this.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the people who wouldn't vote for a person just because they were a Muslim probably aren't voting for Obama anyways.

You have to understand that there are many well-meaning, but sheltered Christian Americans who vote. Obama needs to appeal to the masses to win, not the cynical Fark atheists who know everything.

It's up to the Obama campaign to stifle misinformation about Obama. They cannot afford to allow people to think Obama is a Muslim, because Americans have an overall low opinion of Muslims.

Wow, way to stretch. The concept of having faith in a person to perform well is a fairly common one where I'm from. It doesn't mean that we have "faith" in his divine abilities. Also, the "There will not be any terrorist attacks on America" was simply someone stating his belief that the foreign policy that Obama will introduce will bring down the amount of potential terrorists, and that combined with America's quite excellent law enforcement departments makes it unlikely that we will see future terrorist attacks on our soil. Not, as you chose to interpret it, that Obama will stop the terrorists with his mind bullets.

The photoshop, I will grant you, was pretty terrible.

How do you buy this? He's not proposing much of a foreign policy change. Admittedly, he's for a mostly pre-Bush foreign policy, but that's still the same policy that brought us 9/11.

sorry about Giuliani'ing the thread
