GIS for dengue fever. Their concerts ought to be fairly mosquito-free.

Guess what? Beyond this article, we will NEVER HEAR OF THIS BAND AGAIN. Why? Because the concept is a little beyond RETARDED.

Yeah, a band playing a musical style I've never heard of is so retarded!! They should just recycle the same 60s 70s and 80s American and British stuff over and over again like all the other rock bands!!

I actually saw them on accident in LA a few years ago (according to the article they formed in 2002, it was around then). I was completely impressed with the musicianship and stage presence they had. A very excellent bad with a very interesting sound. I wish them the best of luck and I'm planning on seeing them again in April when they come to SF.

Also i'm a fan of metal, so I definitely didn't have any positive expectations when they took the stage, but they won me over.

If we let this happen, we can expect other acts to follow:

The Mekongs
Paul Angkor
Pol Pot-ishead
Michael Penh

The musical group most like a tropical disease would be Nickelback, the ebola of modern music.

I'm from Los Angeles. They have a huge local following and are actually a good band, but this "Cambodian Pop" thing is blown waaaay out of proportion. They're just a bunch of white dudes with a Cambodian chick singing, trying to capitalize on her "exoticness" to the local hipster crowd. They don't suck at all, but really there's not much more to the band than that formula.

check out a cd called "cambodian rocks." not the box set, the compilation. its VERY VERY good. 60s garage rock by cambodians and its WAY better than you might think. really really really good. seriously.

\i'm white. this isn't a plug.

I thought they released some stuff on the Secret Chiefs 3/Trey Spruance's label 'Mimicry'...

These guys are great. I first heard about them from Weeds, which excerpted one of the band's songs in season 2. (It's on the soundtrack.) I picked up Dengue Fever's Escape from Dragon House, and it's a terrific CD.

/Going to seem them in Toronto next month

I've loved them since I heard them in "Broken Flowers," and their second album, all originals: "Escape from Dragon House" was far superior to the first.

/Happy to be a fan first!

mishmashmusic: goodbomb Let me back you up on that...

yeah, that's it. thanks.

i actually heard the band from the article today on the radio. they can definitely play but the cover (of track 2 from the compilation) was arranged exactly the same way with the same type of lead vocal. the same but not as good for being much less genuine. so i see it more as a cash-in/rip-off by people that are into the music rather than a new interesting phenomenon of its own.

basically an American garage band with a really good Cambodian singer. Cambodian rock of the 60s was WAY better than this, check out a cd called Cambodian Rocks.
Also some of the old school singers from the 60s like Ros Serey Sothea.
(80 to 90 percent of these singers were killed by the Khmer Rouge)
