IRS audits 7-year old for $60,000 in back taxes

Seems that an audit would FIND that a 7 year old owes $60k in taxes. The headline, it makes no sense.

You're supposed to assume someone's identity the day they die, not the day they are born.

Nice misleading headline. Really.

I've known of idiot, loser parents who steal their children's SSNs because their own credit/tax history is destroyed.

WOW, this is happening to a lot of 7-year-olds lately.

/repeat

That's nothin'. My buddy has a letter from the IRS apologizing to him for sending him a menacing letter saying he owed - wait for it - Three Hundred MILLION dollars in back taxes.

Beyond that, the headline is factually incorrect. It's back taxes on $60,000 of income, not $60,000 in taxes. Huge difference there.

It's been said before but this is why we need a flat tax.

When a seven-year-old is forced to attend an audit and pay 60,000 in tax, something's wrong.

/didnt read the article. just going from the headline.

crips sake my mother used my ssn to get a cell phone when i was 16, companys dont check and verify the information or id of a person using ssn most the time. what makes it worse is the phone company told me they only way they will take it off of my credit is if i file a police report against her.....btw if i do file one does that mean i have to press charges or is it just filing saying that hey i didnt do it, it's your problem

Misleading headline of supposed government incompetence is much more entertaining than "Illegal alin commits identity theft to keep from paying taxes and to collect unemployment benefits."

FARK, indeed.

regressive taxes suck.
We need a negative income tax, then a limit to which no taxes are taken, then above that a flat tax.

This would still not help a 7 year old who had his SSN used by another person.

It is not theft, it is fraud.

No, just committed fraud.

The Feds wanted to tax the 7 year old ON $60,000, not for $60,000 which would mean the guy who stole the kid's identity got paid something like $12,000,000 wages(ballparking it). So him making $60,000 makes a lot more sense.

However, going by the article, instead of the misleading headline, seems like an open and shut identity fraud/identity theft situation. Hell they even have the guy, and charges have already been filed.

\I write government end tax software, so I'm really getting a kick out of this thread. Seriously. I have worked specifically on the auditing software and software that finds fraudulent taxpayers, which makes it extra kickilicious.

there would be no IRS. or at least not in its current form.

no "progressive" tax = far less need to file/audit people.

Actually, no. For fraud he would have had to use a number not issued to someone. Thereby making his use of that number to be false. It seems as if you don't know the proper legal definition of "fraudulent."

To use anothers identification is fraud, to pretend to be someone else is fraud. The only reason that this is even discussed is that banks like making it your problem, instead of theirs.

I notice that nobody is mentioning that the identity thief is very likely an illegal alien. One of those people who are supposed to be such an asset to the US: hardworking, law abiding, tax paying seekers of the American Dream.

Quantumbunny 2008-02-24 11:32:34 AM
Also to be technical here, the kid was probably never audited. It is far more likely that his account went into Collections, Audits usually only occur on taxpayers that have been identified as under-filing or non-filing. In this case, just not paying, on a supposedly correct amount, it would go to a collector, not an auditor.

I have no idea which department will handle correcting the IDs, most likely they will just invalidate the return on the child's account and transfer it to the ID Thief's for the same period.

had this happen to a friend of mine. after they found and charged the person who did it, they gave my friend a new ss number to help clear things up with what happen. something but the new one would not show the mess up and also in case others had her ss number to use.

Notes On English From Mister Language Person: The word 'likely' does not mean 'definitely'. However: Hispanic name, working, driving, purchasing vehicles, and obtaining unemployment benefits using a stolen identity. The people who steal identities for monetary gain do it for short-term hits like getting credit cards or swiping bank account contents. Those who do it to essentially become a different person long term do it because they have no identity of their own here. If one deals in probabilities, "illegal alien" is looking pretty good.

evilstein 2008-02-24 12:05:27 PM
But.. but.. but.. illegals were supposed to be PAYING taxes, right? Kind of hard when you're using someone else's identity, huh?

"I notice that nobody is mentioning that the identity thief is very likely an illegal alien."

Hispanic name? Check.
Chicago? (Sanctuary City) Check.
Unpaid taxes & used government bennies? Check.

I didn't both to look anything up, and apparently fat fingered the windows calculator a bit. It's Sunday morning and I haven't had a coffee yet, my bad.

Looking it up for Mr Stickler... seems like the guy would have made around 200,000 to pay 60,000.

\Hates different tax rates on different amounts. Though it pays my bills, I would rather see a flat % with no write offs, no exemptions, period. Rather not go into a rant, so I'll cut off now.

Not bad, check this out. A notice for me to serve jury duty was mailed to my parents house while I was in the middle of the 1991 Gulf War. My sister had to fill it out for me, saying that I can't serve. The cops showed up to arrest me for refusing jury duty. Then to arrest my sister for opening my mail. And that is the Torrance, CA police department.
