(CNBC) Scary The U.S. throws their full diplomatic weight behind a European energy pipeline that will reduce reliance on Russian energy sources. Isn't this how a Tom Clancy novel begins?   (cnbc.com) divider line 17

FTFA "The Nabucco pipeline will be built, I am convinced, because it makes commercial sense," Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza told reporters after talks with EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs."

Sweet. A cheap supply of crackers.

They're making energy pipelines now? Amazing!

I think you're thinking of Red Storm Rising, and no, that's not quite the plot.

Nabucco, which a six-company consortium is due to start building next year at an estimated cost of $6 billion, could transport gas from northern and western Iraq as well as Azerbaijan and offshore Caspian fields, he said.

Hello?

Is Fark learning yet?

In his victory speech in Texas Tuesday, Barack Obama promised to end the Iraq war in 2009, a new commitment that parallels recent opinion pieces in The Nation. (new window)

WRONG.

Isn't this how a Tom Clancy novel begins?

I think I've read them all, and I believe the answer to this question is no.

Whoa, the Russians making the wrong and potentially vastly more expensive choice? Unpossible!

So? Let em (the EU in this case) pay their own damn mercenaries for protection.

If your site is wonderful, why do you have to lure people there from Fark threads?

A little off topic, but I personally think Red Storm Rising was by far the best one he wrote.

I agree that Red Storm Rising was one of the best. I also liked the Sum of All Fears, and the movie upset me quite a bit (neo-fascists instead of muslim terrorists? what?). Harrison Ford was the only good Jack Ryan, though. Alec Baldwin wasn't cut out for it, and Ben Afflack, are you kidding me?

If this six-company consortium is stupid enough to build a pipeline in Iraq, then that's their bussiness.

And when the pipline gets attacked constantly, that's thier bussiness too.

It's not our job to protect the property of idiots, on the far side of the globe.

I'm afraid you're behind the curve. In 15 years, Iraq will be one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, and will be the site of the Mother Of All Construction Booms. While you're stuck rehashing five year old arguments, others are getting in on the ground floor, most notably Uncle Sam. It's basically already a done deal.

Even though this is a highly unlikely scenario, if it were to happen it would seem to answer the question, "What would have to happen for the Bush Presidency to be viewed positively by history?"
