Gee, that was fun, think I'll try it again.

The skier was skiing in an area where two snowmachiners had died last week. And they had just recovered one of the bodies just before the avalanche. The skier is very lucky to be alive.

Nice headline Subby.

Wish they'd said what sort of beacon it was. I want to know how well the Recco reflectors they put in coats and pants are working.

rescuing someone from an avalanche = hero
surviving an avalance = lucky bastard

In this case, Recco wouldn't have helped. Recco works at ski areas where patrol might have the large, unwieldy Recco locator device on hand. They're too big to be carried on a person. Since this guy was out skiing in the backcountry, he most likely had a standard avy beacon on that emits a beep at 457kHz. They other folks in the area also had them on, and after the slide turned to "receive" and pinpointed the location. If you're in the area, it takes a couple minutes to get in close, then you whip out probe poles to find the victim.

The guy was buried 40 mins and survived--that's really the impressive thing. Statistically, his odds of survival after that long are very, very low. Lucky dude....and slow friends.
