(AP) Interesting F-22 Raptor such a hot fighter plane Congress won't allow it to be sold to anyone else. Aussies want it, however, and offer to pay full price plus a keg of VB and naked pics of Naomi Watts   (brisbanetimes.com.au) divider line 95

Because People in power are Stupid 2008-02-23 05:52:09 PM
Selling more of these planes will help bring the price down.

Epsilon [TotalFark] 2008-02-23 05:55:35 PM
It is an awesome plane. Fast as hell, and can carry both air and ground weapons. I learned that from a video game.

Thoguh [TotalFark] 2008-02-23 06:00:11 PM
Of course we won't sell it to anyone else, why would we give away that kind of technology? They can have it in 20-30 years when we've moved onto the next generation of fighters.

zz9 2008-02-23 06:06:58 PM
F22? Isn't that the one that was beaten by A RAF Typhoon in an exercise? Why don't the Aussies buy the better machine instead?

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-02-23 06:40:38 PM
I understand the concept of not wanting to sell certain secrets even to close allies- but Congresscritters are the last idiots who should be making that decision unless it has broader policy implications (i.e., nuclear tech).

Of course, I don't think we should be buying into the whole F-22 boondoggle, so I'd more than happy to see the whole lot of them exported in attempt to recoup our costs.

Actual Farking [TotalFark] 2008-02-23 06:43:56 PM
I fell in love with Naomi Watts during Mulholland Drive. Why are you talking about airplanes?

Is it cheap? And do you trade for Naomi pics? Also, is it cheap?

I learned all I need to know about guns from CoD4.

/except I know M16s can't possibly be that cheap IRL

We can't sell jets to the Australians. The jet exhaust gasses will want to flow counter-clockwise.

Klivian 2008-02-23 07:51:22 PM
Meh, let them buy the F-22. It's too fragile for carrier use.

The F-35 is the hot new plane, and they are working on making it VTOL.

Alphax 2008-02-23 07:54:30 PM
I'm just wondering, when was the last serious air-to-air battle? I remember Libya tried to pick a fight in the mid-80's, but they didn't stand a chance, so I wouldn't count them.

23.5 billion?

thats like 5000 brand new cessna 172's... I think our airforce should fly hordes of 172's instead.

SWARM!

clovis69 2008-02-23 07:59:48 PM
A Typhoon was said to have picked it up on radar from a further distance than USAF thought they'd be able to.

There were serious air to air battles during the first nights of Desert Storm and the first nights of Allied Force over Serbia.

Typhoons have beat down F-15Cs and 16s without a problem however.

LargeCanine 2008-02-23 08:00:29 PM
The Japanese and Asutralians ought be be allowed to buy the F-22. The Britis aer wedded to the Europfighter, unfortunately for them.

DarnoKonrad 2008-02-23 08:01:31 PM
Why? Are the Aussies going to fight the Soviets?

The Japanese ought to making transformable fighter jets like in Macross.

Fixed.

There will be three variants:
F-35A - Convential take-off and landing.
F-35B - Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL)
F-35C - Carrier launch and landing (CV)

Even if the Typhoon beat the F-22 in a dog fight, that doesn't say much. The Typhoon is designed to dog fight. It has almost no ground support capabilities and it has pretty much no stealth technology. The F-22 was supposed to be good for everything. It is stealthy, it can drop bombs, and kick anything else, except the Typhoon I guess.

Not saying the Typhoon isn't cool, cause it is, but let's not compare apples and oranges.

Just watch congress change its tune when Israel decides to mobilize the Jewish Lobby on this issue. The planes will be delivered and wrapped up with ribbons a week later.

They are rusting. Took a pic of a parked one on Tyndall AFB at an air show and discovered the F22 was rusting.

That's cause Israel will provide results on how they do against Russian and Chinese -made missile defense systems in Syria.

I'm going to call img1.fark.net here as well; F-15Es are not air superiority fighters. Throw an F-15C with AESA at'em and you'd most likely find that the Typhoon is by no means unassailable. If the F-15 didn't break apart mid-flight, of course.

Err... no. The F-22 has been called the air supremacy fighter by the Air Force guys. Not just "superiority", "supremacy". It's been designed from the start as a pure dog fighter with absolutely no equal. Now, the Air Force briefly redesignated it the F/A-22 and talked up how it could also drop A/G weaponry, but that was only when Congress was thinking about cutting their acquisition budget (it's multi-role, we swear!). Once that blew over they dropped the A.

Try China.

Sultan Of Herf 2008-02-23 10:36:51 PM
id sell em to Japan, with the condition they fully involve us in all the improvements theyd make, especailly in the electronics area. Dont have much of a problem with the Brits, Aussies, Canadians and Israelis having them either.

hell sell some to China. let them pitch a fit when they realise they dont have the tech base to build them, after spending a decade reverse engiineering it. Why not have some real fun and sell a few to South Korea...watch CHina, Russia and North Korea pitch superfits.

/not worried about china, nukes assure minimal conflict with them
//mutually assured destruction FTW
///ditto on Russia

Alien5151 2008-02-23 11:11:58 PM
Why the hell not? We might as well sell what we're the best in the world at, especially considering the trade deficit and current value of the dollar. I'm fine with selling them to Australia. Ditto on Britain and Japan. As far as Canada, if the shiat really hits the fan down the road at some point they could be the ones helping defend us. So they might as well let them have tech like this.

Goodfella 2008-02-23 11:25:52 PM

Yep. Only whiteys should be allowed to have these planes.

The Israelis have a nasty habit of selling our tech to china, I agree with the rest though.
