Monsieur, the pigs refuse to find any more truffles until you leave...

It was a grim year, no doubt about that. Not that the truffle supply in southeastern PA has ever been any great shakes, but this year, just forget about it. Have some nice chanterelles. A few pounds of morels, maybe.

Dammit. At least we'll always have a steady supply of lesser mushrooms.

/mmm, mushrooms

"I'd ask for the world's rarest truffle. Then while they were searching for it, I'd tunnel my way to freedom. Of course, then I'd miss eating the world's rarest truffle. Quite the quandary."

"At the Aups market, the black truffle's price has more than doubled over the past five years, to about $560 a pound."

Damn, at the Whole Foods I shop at in Vienna, VA, they go for $999.99 a pound.

Needless to say, I skip.

Morels are truffles? Didn't know that. Pretty tasty though. Meaty.

Reminds me of this story Link (new window)

Having eaten a fair bit of truffle gratis and in the name of research, I'm not sure I could shell out for them at a restaurant. They're good, but not £50 for a miniscule shaving good. Marcus Aurelius is right. Wild mushrooms are a pretty good substitute.

I just checked the wikipedia entry on it, and apparently consuming it results in tripping balls. I can see why it would be the food of the gods.

Farmers say production is down by 50-75 percent this winter season and they blame global warming, warning that if thermometers keep rising - as many scientists predict they could - France's black truffle sno-cones will one day be just a memory.

Bad reporting on their part; the mushrooms are in the genus Tuber and resemble tubers but they are, indeed, not tubers.
