Got a D in biology and an A in Chemistry and Chem 2... it depends on your interests. If your not interested in history and interested in geography then your gonna fail...

I'm not interested in history OR geography, and I've never failed a course in one of those subjects. Maybe you're just dumb.

I've never failed a course either. The D in biology was my worst grade in HIGH SCHOOL, I have a 4.0 GPA now that I'm in College. I think you jumped the shark on this one.

Not like the liberal arts are so named because the ancients considered them to be the subjects worthy of a free man, or anything. SCIENCE = TEH SAMRT

/English, Comm. studies double major. Suck it.

I disagree on principle

Some exams are easier than others.

Probably because geography and biology are largely memorization. History and chemistry require thoughtful analysis.

You should add another major there, it will look nice on your resume that you turn in to subway once you get your degree.

I figured geography was easier than history becuase geography is pointing to a map & saying "yup, they are there." whereas history is remembering the times and places that dead people did things that don't relate to what (or who) I'm going to be doing tonight.

I had to take some sort of media studies class. It was the biggest "No sh*t" material in my life. Some of it seemed to incorporate jargon for the sake of using jargon.

Gotta love the "some learning is bad" thinkers. I use the term "thinkers" loosely.

A guy named Drew Curtis is doing okay with his liberal arts degree, by the way.

The jargon had a purpose. It obscures the lack of substance from people who don't know the jargon. Like in education, that has the intended side effect of keeping outsiders with real knowledge and brains from outcompeting the 'in group' who know the jargon even if its nearly meaningless. Teacher testing anyone? Who writes the tests and what do they test, knowledge or jargon?

My god that joke is old. Yet somehow you've managed to articulate it in a manner that not only breathes new life into its hollow carcass, but also conveys the notion that it was created through your own gift of originality! You're a clever one, Uncle Karl.

But then Goldeneye007 turned the joke on its ear by going with Subway - which, as we all know, doesn't serve fries! The bar has been raised for us all on this glorious day. Yes, sir.

OMG I made a mistake... WOW who would think that anyone could make a mistake! Thank you Lord Hogans for pointing out the fact that I made a mistake. I know you've never made a mistake all knowing Lord Hogans.

Oh by the way that comma, makes your sentence a fragment... I'd consider revising.

I did well in both Biology and Chemistry. Then came this magical subject called Biochemistry.

PopeUrban 2008-02-23 06:33:54 PM
Lord help me if I ever join the ranks of The Useful.

My liberal arts education actively helps to improve my day-to-day quality of life. As someone who has trouble with the whole "shutting off the voice (singular, thank god) in my head" thing, I'm glad that it at least has some insightful things to say.

Aunt Crabby 2008-02-23 06:36:47 PM
Forgive an ignorant American, but isn't TFA talking about specific exams used in the UK as college entrance exams? The article was talking about those specific tests, not the difficulty of a given subject matter. The fact that someone may or may not have found a subject to be hard in Uni has nothing to do with the measured difficulty of these specific entrance exams, nor do the difficulty of these exams necessarily correlate with the difficulty of AP exams on the same topic.

Also, subby, there are no media studies a-level exams (or liberal arts) mentioned in TFA so cheap shot (but this is Fark so I guess you are entitled).

maxheck 2008-02-23 06:44:12 PM
Gee... So I guess this explains why the dorm room shared by two Media Studies majors in a hall full of Aerospace engineers was known as the BBBH club.

Method One

Sociology and Psychology - MRS. degrees. Sorry

Among my friends who recieved their bachelor's in Psychology/Sociology, two are graduating from medical school, one is a teacher, and another is earning her PHD in psych and works at a mental hospital.

So... um... it seems to me that you don't know many people who actually study these fields, but rather you know a bunch of dummasses.

I'll admit I majored in a soft science (Cultural Anthropology FTW!) mainly just because I thought it was interesting and I was good at it. I figured that spending my life traveling the world and meeting different people, writing up thesises, getting my PHD, and becoming a professor wouldn't be such a bad thing... of course I fell in love and ended up wanting a more settled life so I don't use my anthro, but I still loved studying it and wouldn't trade my academic experience for an engineer or mathematician's college coursework for anything.

Number41 2008-02-23 07:13:17 PM
Ishkur: In other words, liberal arts are for people too busy, lazy or stupid to do something productive with their education.

Don't the liberal arts include science and math? From what I know, a true liberal arts degree is where you take a little bit of everything, from english to psychology to science. High school part 2, basically.
