Pretty much this, although the Washington Post did a much better job of covering the lobbying angle.

Why don't people start submitting articles on the whole McCain thing by a credible paper instead of articles by the tabloid started it?

You forget - donating to political campaigns is a lot like paying taxes. They HATE that shiat.

McCain? Getting donations? Where's the unlikely tag? His campaign has been in the red for the better part of the last 3 quarters.
