Woohoo.

I got the chance to interview John Wetton just prior to the launch of their last American tour, which was cut short due to a bypass needed for Wetton. Now Palmer is down with the same thing. Saw them opening night in Sarasota. Here's hoping they come around again to my neck of the woods to support the new album.

Steve Howe has not aged gracefully.

Roger Dean trivia: On one of his artwork pieces for YesSongs you can see in the sky where his cats walked across this painting.

Roger Dean is an artist, architect and overall creator of many things. I have a crusty old Dragon's Dream book titled "Views" to back it up.

Or you can go here...

Still hoping for a Yes reunion sometime this year.

actually steve howe IS aging gracefully, because he's not stretching and botoxing himself to look young

i'd say the very definition of aging gracefully.

/prefer yes, UK, king crimson

Good point. I guess he never really was a handsome man. But he looks like something out of a Dickens novel now.

That's some horribly dated looking artwork. I'll bet $10 this album doesn't even get released here.

1985's Astra also had Roger Dean art.
Ooops, was that too nerdy?

Asia is by far the most baffling supergroup I've ever listened to. All that talent coming together to make something so... mediocre.

mrEdude 2008-02-23 07:02:19 PM
yes, whatshisname, steve howe was always kinda freaky lookin, for sure. but what a guitarist, eh?

once in a while it's fun to get psychedelic and throw on Siberian Khatru- one of life's greatest musical pleasures.

Asia may suck, but Wetton and Howe have laid down some classics in their day.

Saw Yes on the Ladder tour, and Howe seemed out of sorts, off to the left, and had to be encouraged to step forward by Anderson after he played The Clap. Looked distracted and withdrawn.

I actually thought he might be mentally ill, he was so disengaged. I suppose he might've just been dissatisfied with his performance or had something else on him mind.

Yeah, but those were all BRUFORD records (yes, records) that you posted!!! That's the unifying aspect.

I think the Yankees may still be interested in Howe. You can never have enough arms.

"I didn't follow prog rock until Asia came around, then Yes teamed up with Trevor Horn and made me a fan. Asia's first two releases were on heavy rotation in my '73 Ford Maverick." Philistine.

Actually, I think Steve was trying to stay away from Igor Khoroshev.
Never invoke that name around Steve, Chris, or Jon.

dmax i concur Bruford is superlative on all of those and in general

he wouldn't be caught dead in Asia, i imagine

That Igor guy did some sort of rape-attempt thing backstage when Yes played the Nissan Pavilion in '98, I think.

Best memory of seeing Yes: here in Seattle at EMP - got online tix (free!) to see them play five songs - SSOTS among them. I think it was right before the tour started here - basically the first live performance with Wakeman in a loooooong time. They were rough, but having

them 10 to 15 feet from you with less than 1000 people there was very cool.

They named the thing "Phoenix?" I preferred the ashes, thanks.

/anybody else remember that year when all the members of Yes did solo records? It was at the height of my Yes fandom, and I collected 'em all. In (descending) order of preference:

Fish Out Of Water (GET THIS RECORD.)
Beginnings
Olias Of Sunhillow
Feels Good To Me
Whatever Wakeman did that year

chickyraptor 2008-02-24 10:23:43 PM
Fish Out Of Water (GET THIS RECORD.)

Agreed.

Beginnings

Some of the worst singing ever committed to vinyl.

Olias Of Sunhillow

Get the vinyl for the artwork, ignore the inane story.

Feels Good To Me

Bruford left 5 years earlier than the year this came out, which was 2 years later than the year the Yes guys did solo albums.

Ramshackled

Whatever Wakeman did that year

ZZzz.

chickyraptor 2008-02-24 10:25:28 PM
Oh yeah, the other one was "i" by Moraz, which was an album combining a high level of musicianship, hokey writing and unlistenable vocals.

CitizenTed [TotalFark] 2008-02-25 12:38:46 AM
As a musician who grew up on BritProg, I must say that Asia sucks the giant goat ass. I'm glad Roger Dean got an opportunity to do some new work for the boys, but it should have been called "Moa". This crap should be extinct.

If there's going to be some kind of prog supergroup, I want to see Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Emerson and Gabriel (with Sinfield doing lyrics and lights). Now THAT would be worth stirring the coals under Roger Dean.

mahavishnunj 2008-02-25 10:50:42 AM
first-that cover is one of the worst dean covers ever.

next-who is the market for an asia reunion? most of the geekiest of prog dorks dont accept this shiatty band, so its not prog fans. although i never underestimate prog fans horrible taste, theyre embracing the laughable CIRCA. nobody cares about asias hits anymore either, not enough to sell tickets i wouldnt think. its just weird.

il Dottore: "I didn't follow prog rock until Asia came around, then Yes teamed up with Trevor Horn and made me a fan. Asia's first two releases were on heavy rotation in my '73 Ford Maverick."

sorry dude, you didnt follow prog rock then either.

ComicBookGuy: Why, oh why, did I skip their show when they played near here in '02!?!?!? They brought back South Side of the Side, for Chrissakes!!!

steve howe hasnt been able to play in eons, you didnt miss anything.

Is he bringing the Sunshine Band with him?

I just ordered an Earthworks CD from Bill Bruford. Also found a Percy Jones (Brand X bass player) CD where he plays with a band called Tunnel. In a bit of heaven thinking about that stuff arriving in a few days.

Not sure I would call Asia progressive. It was basic rock trying to dress up in those clothes IMO. Wish them well though.
