I was never a fan of their older work. I mean, I didn't hate it, but it just wasn't my thing.

BUT

They did a team up with MF Doom and created Rock Co.Kane Flow which is pure rap awesomeness.

This white guy doesn't apologize for liking De la Soul

Though I guess I only really got into Buhloone Mindstate

But yeah, I guess I see where you're going there smitty - I don't generally like a lot of rap. And I'm white. Saying it's "rap music for white people that don't like rap?" or something? Meh. Don't care. I just think it's good.

I do like that Lupe Fiasco fellow, though.

3 Feet High and Rising is a great album, and Me, Myself and I is a great song. Also I've never been the least apologetic for liking them, or any other rap group.

for good or for awesome 2008-02-22 03:45:24 PM
They are the reason I can spell the word G H E T T O.
Thank you De La.

I loved their first two albums and then they tried to go "gansta" for an album or two and lost me. Are De La Soul back to their upbeat roots, or are they still styling themselves "hard", as in their recent contributions to the gorillaz album?

/tired of bleak, jaded bands, need more melodious music, me.

See, I don't get this. Their earlier albums were what set them apart from everyone else. Now here in your link they sound like every other rap act, except they cover their amazing lyrics with all this menacing sound, like De La would cap you, fool. But, anyone knows these guys aren't thugs or killers, so it's a complete disconnect: The sound from the lyrics, the music from the people.

/early De La for ever, later, never.

They did a lot of tunes/shows together, them and the Jungle Brothers. Great team-ups. Someone in the thread already linked a great De La/Tribe tune, the roller skatin' one.

Man, I remember seeing them live back in 1991 in Dallas. It was right when "De La Soul is Dead" came out. We specifically went to see them. My friend's dad dropped us off.

3 young white high-school punk skater kids in a vast, and I mean VAST sea of black people.

It was awesome! :)

/We found out the next day that it was a Junteenth celebration.
//Even more awesome! :D
///3 Feet High and Rising is by far their best album, I think :)

Exactly what I came here to say. That track is just SICK. That's a great song.

lordargent 2008-02-22 08:49:44 PM
deadsanta: Now here in your link they sound like every other rap act

I beg to differ, that particular style was quite different than todays popular rap fare, in fact, parts of that song are even making fun of some current crappy trends in rap.

"Up in them five star tellies sayin two mic rhymes
be them average emcees of the times.
Unlike them, we craft gems.
So systematically inclined to pen lines
without sayin' a producers name
all over the track."

/that song doesn't contain a single utterance of the word 'biatch'

I'm absolutely never apologetic for listening to hip hop/rap/etc (and never have been, even in the mid-80s as a gleamingly-white blue-collar 10-year-old), and consider DE LA SOUL IS DEAD to be the best concept album since THE WHO SELL OUT.

I got to see them on their first NYC headline show, right after this album came out, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen (and one which inspired me to record my own goofy hip hop years later).

That's funny, I broke out this CD last night for some reason and I listened to this track 3 times before proceeding to the next disc. It truly gets better every time.
